Etta James could wipe the floor with the overrated Joplin - who spent a career bitin James sound and phrasing. But what took whisky/cigarettes and lots of screaming rehearsals by Joplin to try to get near her sound ...just came naturally to Etta! This is the real thing!

As much as I love Big Mama Thornton's original, Janis Joplin's live cover, and Koko Taylor's in-studio version, I think Etta James nailed this one--her band is perfect, the arrangement is clean, no filler, and Ms. James is beyond intense without histrionics. A masterpiece.
