If it was 1980, maybe it was a performance of Ashes to Ashes. I've never heard of this performance on TV of Bowie in a coffin, but that would make sense. Putting Major Tom to rest.
I was 9 when Bowie did that SLN performance and it tripped me out - never forgot it... Have yet to see any posting of this performance. I also remember during that show a performance where they did a green screen of Bowie's head over a moving puppet and the puppet kept groping himself... seriously....
Bowie may have dropped Nomi because Nomi was stealing the spotlight...i remember seeing them on SNL and Nomi was quite memorable...don't remember a coffin, though...
What you mean is a 1979 Saturday Night Live (SNL) performance, featuring Bowie framed in a suit very similar to the one Klaus Nomi (on backing vocals) would immortalize, later on.
I think the setlist was "The Man Who Sold the World" & "TVC 1 5".
To learn more about Klaus Nomi (and the 1979 Bowie collaboration) check out the documentary THE NOMI SONG. Or "The Nomi Song Trailer" here on You Tube.
@LunaSeaSane Actually, it was NOT the suit he wore during "Man Who Sold the World." It was indeed a coffin. I am VERY familiar with the 1979 SNL performances. Thanks for your reply though ;)
Nope, it wasn't "The Hunger", although that was a nice scary piece of Bowie! ;) No, now from the other people who remember exactly what I was talking about it was a song that was aired live, but never made it into syndication at SNL...it was more than likely aired at the same time as the NOMI appearance in 1979 with Bowie. Thank you SO much for replying though! ;) sanz
reason, the NOMI SONG dvd which well portrays Nomi's rise & all-too brief relation with Bowie does NOT have the entirety of SAT NIGHT LIVE (only bits) that these two geniuses did: the voices are opera-sounding, and give Bowie's songs an even greater profoundness;
the video--comic as well as dramatic--should be issued to the public: only Billionaire Bowie can explain why it isn't or why he ditched Nomi, for even a short
Thanks for the reply, however, we have ALL seen the NOMI performance with TCV 15, Boys Keep Swinging, and Man Who Sold the World with Martin Sheen as the host. This is NOT the performance I am looking for though...
You are sooo welcome! I am so glad that you mentioned this clip. I was able to pull it up on that other website and now I think the NOMI performance was the one that spooked me out as a little kid.
i wanna see that now. i have only managed to find info. on the performance with Klaus Nomi where Bowie was carried to the front of the stage (SNL singing The Man Who Sold the World) i found that on milkandcookies (dot) com and roctober (dot) com/roctober/greatness/nomi although no luck with the coffin/sarcophagus.
Yeah, the NOMI performance was cool. All I can think of is that I saw the actual live performance which didn't make it on the cutting room floor. I have found many others now that remember the exact same performance, yet none can find a video for it. I am sure it was either on SNL or "Fridays", but Fridays has no record of Bowie performing...ugh...
if i had to guess, i'd say... Little Wonder. but that's from the early 90's. and a bathtub. but he was pretty freaky.
oooor, you're thinking of a clip from The Hunger. he dies in that one (more or less). he was a vampire and obviously had a coffin. but i've never seen the whole movie, so i can't tell you positively.
I remember seeing Bowie, I think on SNL, and he was singing Boys Keep Swinging while his face was projected on a puppet. It was really creepy. He kept playing with himself. Does anyone remember this? If you have it, please post it. It's truely one of the weirdest things I've ever seen.
most likely you're thinking about the scene in the film THE HUNGER where he played a 200 year old vampire in modern day Manhattan who ages fast and his ancient Egyptian vampire lover Catherine Deneuve carries his feeble body and places him into a coffin
in an attic not dead but too feeble to rise again along with other rotting vampires that never fully die you hear them all MOAN THEY ARE NOT SINGING
Thanks for the reply ;) However, it was NOT the Hunger, but rather a musical performance. I own The Hunger... But, seriously, thank you for the relpy.
well then it could be the live performance of TIME from the Diamond Dogs Tour in 1974 it begins with 2 guys probably back up singers opening up these 2 large doors which could be interpreted as being a coffin it also works well with the theme of the song the video is on utube
Wow! Thanks again for checking. No, it was for sure a television performance on a night time program. And it was a coffin, sarcophagus, etc... I love that "Time" clip with the lighted hand though, that one has always been a favorite ;) Thanks again...
No, it is definitely not the "The Man Who Sold the World" performance from SNL. Since posting this, others can remember the performance I was referring to. Bowie was WIDED-EYED almost screaming. One person remembered him laying in an Iron Lung device, while another remembered it as a sarcophagus. Perhaps it could have been on the same live SNL show, because it was live back then, but never made it to syndication because of the NBC censors???

are you talking about the SNL episode ? bowie is carried onto the set in a strange suit by Klaus Naomi and another guy ...bowie sings THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD ? ..ive uploaded that twice but it keeps getting banned
I believe the clip you're looking for is David's appearance on Dick Clark's Salute to the Seventies, in which he mimed to Space Oddity dressed in a plasticy boiler suit. He is stood rigidly to attention with his hands at his waist and a guitar slung across his back. The studio set comprises vertical slabs that are curved at the bottom. For visual reference, hunt down the picture sleeve for Alabama Song. Cheers!
I recall this too, believe it was an iron lung device and (if my memory isn't embellishing) Bowie was rolled onto stage in it Hannibal Lector-style. Agree that it was late 70s - early 80s time period and on a late night program (SNL?). Appearance possibly in support of STATION TO STATION, performing TVC 15 (??). I don't know if that jives with his discography. Hit me back if you find it, I'd love to check it out again.
Yeah, that could be it...at least from that time period. I am sure it wasn't TVC 15, just because the song was drab from what I can remember. NBC keeps giving me canned responses, but I won't give up dammit ;) B
Likely the BBC play... Cannot remember name? Sure you can find it somewhere mate

I recall that Bowie was carried onto the stage by 2 Men & placed in an up-rite position in front of a mike.
Never moving once."except for his head & arms".
I also recall it being more like a "Pin Striped Sarcophagus" than a Coffin & I recall the song as being "The Man Who Sold The World".

It's from 15 December 1979, SNL. I looked it up on the net. Someone please post this before we go nuts just trying to explain the durn performance!
There is a DVD of his collaboration with Noni that may have some of it on there, I wouldn't know because I haven't seen it yet.

Yeah, NBC monitors YouTube for copyright infringement fairly regularly. Viacom has a huge lawsuit pending with them right now...
