@marehtseira: Steve Lillywhite did the sound effects for this. He played a small "glockenspiel" throughout the song (a xylophone with metal bars that gives a bell-like sound) and for the middlesection they went like MacGuyver with a recording of Lillywhite holding a knife against the spokes of a spinning bike wheel and Bono breaking some bottles.

God, How I remember this! I feel so freaking old! I watched them sing this at the Bayou Club in D.C. in Georgetown. I was 17, with a fake ID, standing in the freezing cold to get in. 1981. The dancing and slamming haha we thought it was so cool then. Well...1980. time is travelling at warp speed! People actually danced like that in those days by the way. It was the "New Wave" dance thing. Of course this tune has lots of Cure type pace to it. This song is an amazing transformation of the band at that time. Look at the u2 videos on youtube from 1978 and 9 when they were all teenagers. Then this! It's an astonishing 'arrival' for such a young group of artists. It seems to come out of nowhere. They are fully formed here.

The only differences I can pick out are the key's and the instrumentation, as in it's a keyboard playing a minor riff in JD's song, and a guitar playing a major riff here.
