I'm not sure that chinese musicians could fully understand a white musician's interpretation....it's not a racist thing, but they are just from radically different backgrounds.
I believe it's better to stick to Rostropovich's interpretation of Brahms.
yo-yo ma was born in france and raised in new york. and that is completely a racist thing. it'd be like someone telling you to avoid rostropovich's brahms interpretation because he couldn't relate to a german composer.
@goopy630 Perhaps a low IQ might not allow you to fully comprehend the idiocy of your accusation, given the fact that racism implies the conviction that one race is superior to another, and my statement was nowhere near that.
I just said that people from RADICALLY different backgrounds/cultures might not be able to fully comprehend it, but not because they're "stupid" or anything like that. Rostropovich was Russian, therefore European, not so radically different from German, culturally.
german and russian cultures are very different. just because they're both european doesn't mean they're similar. you said a chinese musician could not fully comprehend a white man's composition, be mindful of your wording. especially when yo-yo ma's cultural background is not chinese, so that part is irrelevant.
dvorak's cello concerto (one of rostropovich's best) was based on american culture, should we trust an american's more than rostropovichs' interpretation?
@goopy630 I did not say they're "similar". You're the one who just said that. I just said they're not radically different, like a European composer and a chinese musician.
In my humble opinion, music is not about "trust", and I find your choice of words rather harsh; music is about feelings expressed through music itself.
you say that yo-yo ma cannot culturally relate to the composer, which has validity to it (although he has studied immensely all over the world so his interpretations don't come from nothing). you keep referring to him as chinese, yet his cultural background is france and primarily new york. yes he appears chinese, but his main cultural background is not chinese.
and calling someone idiotic and having a low iq on youtube? just enjoy the music that was posted.
@goopy630 Will you please stop putting words in my mouth that I never said???? The most annoying thing is to exchange opinions with unintelligent people, which always have to make stuff up, to be able to validate their point, often distorting things that are being said. It feels like debating politics on FOXnews! ALL I SAID is they're from different backgrounds and might not be able to fully comprehend it, completely different from "cannot culturally relate", which you made sound racist.
you're right, it is hard to argue with unintelligent people, as i'm doing so right now. i'm sure you're definitely qualified and have studied enough to say "chinese musicians can't understand a white man's interpretation" about a french/american cellist.
it's just a terrible blanket statement that you made inaccurately.
@goopy630 Again, you keep deliberately twisting my words, to force a racist meaning out of them, when there wasn't any to begin with! Had I been racist, I wouldn't even bother wasting time arguing with you and defending myself, since all racist people I know are proud of being racist and do not hide it.
The "blanket statement" was made when you ass-umed very superficially that I was "racist", when I instead surround myself with friends of ALL RACES, and I play in bands with people of all races!
just because you hang out with people of different races means you can make statements like that. whether or not you were intending to be racist, it came across as that (but hey...you're white so it's ok).
I'm of asian descent but was born and raised in the states. i had a full scholarship to a music school and have been studying cello for 18 years. to say i couldn't understand an interpretation merely because cultural differences is ludicrous.
@goopy630 It really seems that you're the one with the hang-ups about racism, and you see it everywhere, even where it's not.
Just to let you know my background, I come from a northern Italian family (yes you're correct, I'm white): my grandparents during WW2 were against Hitler and Mussolini, and gave shelter IN THEIR OWN HOME to jewish people so that they would not be found and deported (which means KILLED and passed through a chimney). I've dedicated my life to fighting neo-nazis and racism!
@MegaAffle It DOES, when you take the time to read my posts, and comprehend the simple fact that I posted so many comments, to defend my own comments from the very false accuastion of "racism". I am not racist in any way, shape or form. Anyone with half a brain would know I'm not racist, when they read that I dedicated MY WHOLE LIFE to fight racism and neo-nazis.
@vampiroangelico Erm...dude, calm down. Number One: Don't post things like this again, just to avoid confusion like this. Number Two: No need to repeat trite insults like "Anyone with half a brain". Number Three: If you aren't racist then you should bother responding to these other "idiots", if you think they are "idiots". (quotation marks used for elimination of connotations)
@MegaAffle You exaggerated the terminology on your comment. I did not call you an idiot.. I apologize if I seemed to come across a little strong, but I got sick of people falsely accusing me. I will try to contain myself more, in the future. :-)
@vampiroangelico Hard to "understand" your comment as anything but racist. Keep such bigoted opinions to yourself and we will all be better off. At the minimum, show some respect to the greatest living cellist in the world, that world does not only include "whites".
Learn that Yo-Yo Ma is AMERICAN, he was just given the highest honor possible by the president of the United States.
And stop tossing factually inaccurate accusations around, I'm not a bigot AT ALL, I love this piece of music and I OWN Yo Yo Ma albums. I NEVER claimed to have a problem with "a world that does not only include whites". If anything, YOU are the one who said it, pulling it right out of your ass, trying to make me look like something I'm definitely not.
I hate when people falsely accuse others, just to start fights!
@vampiroangelico This is your comment "I'm not sure that chinese musicians could fully understand a white musician's interpretation....it's not a racist thing, but they are just from radically different backgrounds" I did not change or add to what you said.
Not sure if I like this better or Jian Wang's version...I prefer Jian's less literal interpretation of the sextuplets, more mystical tremolo which I think is what Brahms wanted
i agree that his initial statement was not racist, but extremely ignorant at the very least. good show boys :)
