jello biafra is one of the smartest political activists that there has ever been. I absolutely recommend looking into more of his spoken word (and band as well) work. If you have ever herd of the Dead Kennedys (by their hits police truck, California Uber Alles, and Holiday in Cambodia), he was the lead singer and songwriter in the band back in the seventies. Been a long time fan of his, and he never ceases to amaze me.
For UK residents ONLY, if you want to legalise cannabis then there is an e-petition you can sign on the Home Office's site. It's open to sign until August 2012.

Sorry, compelled. Marijuana is no less harmful than many an herbal smoke blend. It's burned, has tars and carbon monoxide, just like any other kind of weed. You have to compare THC against Nicotine to see a non-toxic / toxic split. Yes, it's less dangerous than tobacco or alcohol, but it's still not good to breathe *any* kind of smoke or operate heavy machinery or drive under the influence of any mind altering substance. I would agree, if alcohol and tobacco are not illegal, neither should weed.
The LD50 (median lethal dose) of nicotine is 50 mg/kg rat. To put that in perspective the LD50 of mercury is 1mg/kg rat. THC has a LD50 of 1270 mg/kg rat male. The New England Medical Journal in stated on THC's LD50, "1500 pounds (680 kilograms) of cannabis would have to be smoked within 14 minutes" to cause death.
In thousands of years of known data, there has never been a credible report of overdose. THC is safe, cannabis is safe, smoke is bad.
@ProfessorPEARL: Did I say anything about the LD50? What I said was breathing ANYTHING that is burning gets tar (marijuana produce some), CO and particulates. This is the same stupid point brought up by many folks who ignore the facts. As safe as THC may be, *smoking* anything at all is bad for your lungs! Period. Ask a scientist or a competent medical professional about this. Driving a vehicle or operating heavy machinery while under the influence of THC is *also* monumentally stupid.
@ProfessorPEARL: I will reiterate and refer you to real research. Irrespective of the 1270mg/Kg for THC and 10mg/Kg for nicotene, smoking marijuana is not as safe as people are distorting the facts. 1) Marijuana has 4 times the tar of tobacco (raw processed for rolling and smoked). 2) Produces the same amount of Carbon Monoxide and similar particulates. 3) Even herbal smokes with no dangerous chemicals at all can cause lung cancer. If common sense is lacking, you've been smoking too much hash.
Interestingly enough, although I have the means, I do not smoke it. Searching for truth versus believing in myths is what sets a skeptic apart from a faither.
The science has been done, the figures are in, anyone who wants to look at the data can, regardless what their personal opinions are...
@ProfessorPEARL: Exactly my point. Perhaps if they made an herbal infusion using THC in the manner of an "energy drink", they could imbibe safely. But, it would still be necessary to impose some of the same limitations on drinking that as on alcohol. After all, DUI applies to any mind altering substance :P
Marijuana does come in many different forms. Pills, food additives, lotions, you name it. But sadly they are all illegal because federal law states Marijuana is as dangerous as cocaine and heroin. As for smoking, you can cut down on over 50% of the carcinogens by using a water pipe (passing the smoke through water). Smoking is still bad for your health but when compared to drinking and smoking cigarettes it is far far less lethal. It's this fallacy that makes the subject of illegality a joke.
@thesavagekhan: True enough. But smoking it will always be more hazardous than any of the extracts. Why do you think tobacco has not entered into a world of bongs and waterpipes? Anyway, it needs to be decriminalized for purely logical and legal reasons irrespective of any imagined safety issues.
@RyuDarragh I guess you never heard of a Hooka bar?
If marijuana were legal I would smoke it instead of cigarettes. The reason it's not is that there's a lot more money for the government in it being illegal. And I hate the way they want to make everything that's helpful to people illegal and most of us know that they're the ones causing the illness anyway by Poisoning our environment then not allowing anything that helps, and calling us crazy?
A hooka bar in the US would immediately come under the usual Restaurant Sanitation Laws that all must obey, from lowly hot dog cart owners to great casino operators. The government is not really "poisining the environment". They don't need to. Industry and private citizens dumping crap they know they shouldn't do that just fine. Like Jeb the garage owners little drum of tansmission fluid that he dumps in the back 40 when if gets full. The government doesn't make money, they make FUD.
that's not completely true when it comes to marijuana, there are ways to get the thc you need to get torched and not have any tar in your system build up because of it, such a the vaporizer which, as the name says, cooks it and turns the smoke into vapor. in layman's terms, no smoke, no problem
@afterlifeavenger: The same is true for tobacco, but you don't see nicotene distributed that way.
My whole point, which some apparently are already not bright enough to figure out (maybe not you, though... just the ones downthumbing my comments), is that nothing is all that safe and marijuana, like ANYTHING smoked, has it's own share of problems. The hypocrisy of the governments double standard vis alcohol and marijuana is an example of what we need to fight. Not exaggerated claims of safety.
@afterlifeavenger: Along those lines, I agree that, sans te smoking related hazards, marijuana is far safer then alcohol as the high it provides does not require the liver to detoxify free radicals and metabolic byproducts. It's also less addictive than nicotene, but hardly as pleasent a taste as tobacco can provide and shares the same burden of hazards in tar and CO as tobacco.
Infused/extracted (THC) much safer than nicotene. Also vastly safer than alcohol, but shares the same hazards while intoxicated (driving, operating heavy machinery, etc.).
We humans *suck* at evaluating risk.
You can go out into a field of flowers and drink in natures bounty and get a John Denver "Rocky Mountain High",... and step on a rattler, get bitten, and die.
That is a load of bull shit and i love MJ, but I like the truth more dude, the person I know was vomiting all of the floor and seeing aliens plus they felt like they were dying and shit, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it
@fox20012 Indeed, you can overdose on Marijuana. However, you would die from the smoke long, long before the multiple tons of marijuana you would have to smoke would kill you.
@AlphaLinkX Mainly because for you to die from a Marijuana overdose you would have to smoke 144,000 joints in an hour, but you would fall asleep by the time you hit the 10th joint.
Hey compelled. You should talk to my friend Ann. she works in mental health and people are now showing up from marijuana use. THC levels have been elevated to new levels. Not like the old days anymore.
I don't understand why we don't use hemp practically. I understand the history and politics behind making it illegal...but why can't we start thinking at this point? Further prooves to me that evolution is garbage...because we can't even evolve on a basic level concerning our survival. Peace.

Actually, what you said is right there, but I'll cut & paste (just in case)
"You have to compare THC against Nicotine to see a non-toxic / toxic split"
By what means would you have them be compared, alchemy?
What would kill you if you smoked 1500 lbs of cigarettes in lets say, a two hour period? Is it the smoke or the nicotine?
The LD50 allows for comparisons of all chemicals & compounds.
Peace.
