  • originally wrote in 68, if you don't think this was about vietnam, than don't, God bless america.

  • Think he was high for this?

  • Love Arlo and this song!!!

  • Kurt Cobain (: thumbs up if you understand what im saying :)

  • First time i heard this was on 97.3 K-ROCK nooner with Terry Evans.Laughed my ass off.51 dislikes what are you people fucking nuts???Arlo is great.Must be fucking Beiber heads or puke... Nickelback fans.

  • anyone else noticing the face of just who all is in this crowd ? just goes to remind us , is all good song

  • does anyone know the tuning of this?

  • I love this song and my pappy who died on April fools day loved this song to

  • I came here from a GI Joe Psa.

  • I ADORE Arlo Guthrie. This is the third of his songs I'm posting on Facebook tonight.

  • @vanillabean-

No, it's Woody Guthrie's son, Arlo. Duh...

  • 3:25 This is the best song ever written..

  • is this guy bob dylan's alter ego?

  • @VanillaBean254 They met before Bob got famous and Arlo got "famous." Bob sought out Arlo's dad Woody when he got the chance to learn songs from him, and Arlo was actually the one who met him first.

At least, that's the way Arlo tells the story of how he met a young Bob Dylan.

  • This is just silly. I just wanted to hear the song, not this psychobabble.

  • Bob Dylan + Mitch Hedberg = This video

  • This guy's an idiot. How come someone who sings or acts has a more important opinion than someone who does actual work?

  • @comtnbiker A few things: clearly you have never worked as a musician or an actor, as most of my friends who do either spend more hours at work and more hours on their feet than I do even in a week of 12s.

And who the hell said their opinions were more important? They just have a taller platform and a larger audience to deliver them to, that's all.

  • I'm 14 and love this so much..

  • The time when true musicians actually had soul put into their songs.. and didnt use fucking autotune to hide their horrible voice.... Oh and a benefit festival... Had heart too..... Man I love this style of music.... What sorta genre would it be classified though Id love to listen to more songs like this. It isnt really country but has that feeling...

  • @DjTommyKx

It's called "Talking Blues" -- yeah, even the country-ish or folky tunes in this style are called talking /blues/

If you like it, check out Jaimie Brockett The Legend of the USS TItanic for another example.

  • wow... thanks tomecome for enlightening us to this blokes plight and that he could push through it.

  • I'm going to see him in concert tomorrow. :D

  • at 1:07 is that a young bob dylan ?

  • I'm cooler than this song

  • ...and i dont wanna die, i just wanna ride my motorcy cle

  • i dont want a pickle, just wanna ride for motorcycle.

  • im`e so glad Anders Breivik was`nt around ,it would of gone wrrong realy quick

  • what tuning is this?

  • Bob Dylan has a funny song. look up Bear Mountain, not quite as funny but still pretty good.

  • Arlo says he'd been singin' this song about 8 years so I'm figuring that he was 19 when he recorded "Alice's Restaurant" the album with both songs on it, so he must be 27 years of age in this video +/- . And that would make it 1978 around there . . . and he's STILL playin' THIS song ! ! ! wow . . .

  • Arcade games, pick one that you can do - ONE that you can do, okay? Not a whole bunch of ones where you have no idea what the hell you're doing.

  • Now look, the junk food and the candy just rots your teeth, gives you bad breath, and the girls run like hell. Stay the hell away from buying any rock TV shirts, or hip hop gear, or anything like that. Arcade games — pick out one that you can do, okay? ONE that you can do as opposed to a whole bunch of them that you don't know what the hell you're doing. Techno music just puts a hole in your brain — are, are you listening to me? Look at me when I'm talking to you!

  • Thanks JGuth3 for posting these amazing excerpts of American history.

  • I got the "arlo" album when I was 13 - this & the pause of mr Claus still make me smile. I'm English and hold Arlo as evidence that Americans do actually get irony. Keep pickin'.

  • 45 people want to die.

  • check out the crowd. not one electronic distraction.

  • @geepbee Really kind of a dopey post. Sorry, but it had to be said. It's 1975! We didn't have eletronic distractions.

  • @dda3798773 exactly my point. In 1975 one could go to a show, put the outside world on hold, and live in the moment for a couple of hours. The comment was simply a comparison between then and now, where we all seem to carry at least some electronic baggage that can prevent us from enjoying the world around us if we allow it to. No need to apologize by the way.

  • Absolute fckn classic folk parody awesum timeless hippie country ballad yokel tune genre!

  • I ride and I have always sang this to my little girl. She is seven now and she listens to it on youtube.

  • darn this makes me just want to cry. takes me back, thanks so much arlo, for so many years of music.

  • lol 150 sideways and downwards at the same time :)

  • what an awsome guy

  • my dad always sang this song to me and my sisters

  • certainly inherited his dad's gift of storytelling

  • my dad always sang this song too

  • Happy Birthday Arlo ! Keep On Playin' !

  • well i guess he was in.. quite a pickle

  • @DimebagJim420

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can't watch Arlo without laughing. He's really great on stage.

  • Happy Birthday Arlo :) QC

  • Very entertaining. I just love this guy.

  • @matgrin I'm from the United States, I'm not a capitalist f*cker, and I think I'm a pretty good person :)

My dad always sang this song and I was like, "No way is that an actual song!" I'm kinda glad that it is :D

  • I was at this concert in Worthington, MA. I was 15yrs old and went with my best friend. They handed out free, yes free posters for this concert and after the show we went back stage and Arlo signed our posters. "I still have that poster..".(say it in an Arlo story telling voice)

  • Woody was one of the best traditional American songwriters of the 20th century, and his son is one of the best singing comedians around, and this video is a good example of why. His sense of the absurd, in America and in life, is just so brilliant. In his later years, he's become more of a concert guitarist and traditionalist and less of a comedian, but his early work is on record, and that's a blessing.

  • One of the best concerts I ever attended was Arlo & Pete Seger at the Hollywood Bowl.

  • Arlo never sold out; see Wikipedia. He's demonstrated in Wisconsin for public employee union workers. In December 2005 his family joined other musicians on a train trip across the country to raise money for musicians financially devastated by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. At his home in Mass., he feeds the hungry, takes care of the sick, and supports the cause for the cure of Huntington's disease, which killed his father, Woody. He might even be a better person than a musician.

  • See the hippie ash in his pbr can? After that he threw the can away, wish our world today would do the same!

  • i absolutely love arlo guthrie's hilarious stories!

  • awesome !

  • Thank you for sharing this clip, it's wonderful!... Am I the only one that thinks with appropriate effort in hair & makeup etc, Michael Rosenbaum, formerly of Smallville could play Arlo from this point in time in a biopic?..

  • Thanks, Arlo! from an old biker/hippie

  • lot more like dylan than his pops

  • classic.

  • a perfect performence

    a perfect song

makes me laugh for the 100th time even when the crowd doesn't laugh..

may i say, even makes me happy =)

"it was that very moment that the pickle with the ticket

    was going down my throuht,

that i knew for sure that..

    i don't want a pickle" =)

    hilarious!

  • The significance of the pickle is 42.

  • One of the first songs I heard by Arlo.

  • 41 people are missing out on life.

  • it is a form of:

i am a lonly cowboy on the preri...

    just with my horse!

traveling from town to town to deafeat the baddy's

    yea

    ...

    original

  • My dad was a biker all through his life and this song along with Alice's Restuarant, and assorted Doctor Hook songs are all I remember of childhood. He used to play them on his stereo system (on the turntable o' course), so loud I could hear them through my bedroom floor and I'd doze off to these tunes. I love my dad.

  • I got to meet him about a week ago he was smoking and gave me tips on playing the guitar

  • I like that......never heard it and very interesting story...lolol

  • I LOVE pickles.

and my dad used to listen to this song with me, all the time.

    Maybe this is a reason?

  • ARLO~~!!!

  • i had a friend who used to sing this song, hmmm.

  • Oh, the good old days! Music sucks today!! Poor young, pathetic Facebookers.

  • as a biker, I gotta say the story he's tellin' is faaaaantastic

  • I love this song and the performance. A perfect shaggy dog story and such a blessing to hear. I first heard a version of this song in college from a hall mate named Steve and I embraced it as a song for me to find and have in my collection one day. Thank you for sharing this!!

  • It's the perfect combo of creative storytelling, great humor, musical talent and impeccable timing. gotta love it.

  • The GI Joe parody has absolutely murdered this song for me. Once I get through the laughter, I'm sure I'll love it.

  • I deicate this to Victoria, who always played this song when we hung out! She was the prettiest woman in Scudder Hall at Suny New Paltz, back in 1983! Well, our short relationship was like most typical relationships in college--it didn't last long! ! I was glad to find out many years later that she was married, with child on the way! Peace, BobbyK

  • TRUE RIDERS UNITED LOVES THIS TUNE HEY PEOPLE STOP BY OUR WEBSITE GOOGLE SEARCH US AND ENJOY

  • Great video and great sound. I didn't think he was cute, but loved him anyway. I was wrong. He was gorgeous! Thank you from an 'almost' Arlo groupie!

  • Kurt Cobain and all three of his chords.

  • 41 people used to be about 6'1".

  • the stage is made of sand!!

  • ahhh,... the memories... one of my dads favorites.. i remember i recited it for my senior year speech class.

  • ahhh,... the memories... one of my dads favorites.. i remember i recited it for my senior year speech class.

  • Thanks Arlo..been one of my favorites since way back..when I was workin for Alice polishing pie trays n recycling rubber bullits

  • @sydwayman, not sure i want to get caught up in this any more than to say i agree, a lot of us did forget. i saw friends sell out & become yuppies w/bmw's & cuisinarts. but i held out, kept my values & tried to teach my kids those same values. what's happening w/the governor of wisconsin goes against those values & everything arlo's dad, woodie, fought for. i'm struggling financially as a result, but i wouldn't have it any other way.

  • @lunavistallc no one cares

  • @lunavistallc Good for you!!!!

  • @lunavistallc I can not really understand what you mean. Arlo was (years ago) the greatest ever. (Have: "Together in Concert" and "Precious Friend" (Live with Pete Seeger)).

Arlo sang songs his father wrote; now his kids (I know of Sarah-Lee for sure) sings the songs of her grand-dad that her father sang. And so we keep learning those songs if we listen to them.

Arlo is no longer my most favourite, but Steve Goodman and Tommy Emmanual is.

Does not mean I do not like Arlo anymore.

  • memories from Arlo... when i think of my youth & our idealistic generation, it makes me nostalgic for the old days; we might have been young, but at least we cared.

  • @lunavistallc Sadly most of you just forgot how to care.

  • Gotta love Arlo!

  • this is great thanks i love arlo guthrie

  • Arlo is a singer from the soul.....

  • I listening right now on tv..... that's amazing how great talents never forget!

  • Thanks for sharing this classic! Remember when musicians could actually play instruments?? Sure miss them days!

  • Years of loving the song, but the story lacks! maybe if I were stoned.....

  • This song is cool and all... but I can't take it seriously after that G. I. Joe PSA.

    Motorsickle song ftw.

  • Saw him and the whole family do this 6 months or so ago...so 8 years plus 35 years and it's still great!!!

  • I just want to have fun like this again. Man this world is not what it used to be.

  • Nice Video, great stuff

  • alro is like a funny little bob dylan

  • @fguka Bob Dylan had NO sense of humor. Arlo Guthrie is brilliant.

  • @crazyhawk59 that's why i said he's a FUNNY bob dylan lol and they're both brilliant

  • @fguka and Bob Dylan is like a gravely grumpy Woody Guthrie, it's the circle of life.

  • @fguka No, Bob Dylan is the un-funny Guthrie. He thought he was Woody's son.

  • @fguka funny you say that because Arlo's father, Woody Guthrie, was Bob Dylan's main influence in the early days of his songwriting. bob even wrote a song about him: "Song To Woody"

  • Yes, that is amazing, Arlo...quite.

  • I have been showing this video to the kids in my family and now they have all their friends at school singing this song. Would have loved to see more from this concert. He is my favorite.

  • truly amazing song, My old man use to quiote it, and I didnt realize it was a song until he tossed it on the cd player the other day when were were taking a trip to eastern oregon. I'm 30 now. God damn music was better before I was around.

  • my dad used to sing this to me. i always thought it funny and never thought that it actually existed. so funny

  • I never tire of listening to this story!

  • damn he's so handsome

  • He is so great as was that era

  • @Life0fTearsRainDown I feel SO lucky at living then. I'm 65 now. I was at Altamont. Wasn't pretty. Ended the era. Peace.

    PS--------- 81 SUCKS

  • aaah woostock and this man was incredibel

were are those peolple calling for love and peace IN THE USA???? today in usa are all capitalist fuckers!!!!

  • @matgrin I am not a capitalist fucker. Where exactly are you from? Have you met many people from the USA? Don't generalize like that.

  • @Sydwayman SORRY y generalize because...,.,. WERE ARE ALL THE YANKIS THAT WAS IN WOOSTOCK 69

ALL THAT BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE ??? all that pensament good and inteligent ?

your country today is a SHIT ,,,, BUSH DISTROY IRAK !!!!!!!!!! and the unite states FUCKIGN people like that

ore not mater.... i am sow sad .,.,. is realy that is a shit generalize, but your country is soow shit ,.,,.i dont cant no generalize,.,,. i dont see good persons FROM USA TODAY... :(

YOU ARE A GOOD PERSON? HELLO is the first

  • @matgrin Our country is constantly changing. Back in 69 we were in the vietnam war AND we basically had a fascist government (Richard Nixon was president). Right now we have a president who is "trying" to end the war in Iraq at least and most of the people I know are against the wars(Bush had less then a 25% approval rating before he left). The united states has many good people.

  • @matgrin This was in 1975... Woodstock was in 1969. Did you take some of the brown acid "??

well, if you, you weren't alone. Peace, love and rock and roll. Be cool, dude.

  • @matgrin First of all... Woodstock was in 1969... this was filmed in 1975. If you were at Woodstock and a "Yanki" Also spelled YANKEE - you must have taken some of the brown acid. Good luck with that.

I LOVE THIS SONG and the pickle was injured...perhaps a Viet Nam Pickle Vet. You need to listen to the words.

  • just a man , his guitar & one hell of a funny story !

  • This song always makes me laugh.I like Arlo. He's just great!

  • Love it!

  • I like the album version better, but this is still great stuff.

  • never knew the signifigance of the pickle lol

  • @spoonido

    then be proud man:D

    and keep smoking

  • haye haey

  • ever love some one so much?

  • 37 people don't get it.

  • @thetruthfulliar 38 now. 38 people weren't high when they viewed this, and to them it's like a story you make up for a kid when you suck at making up stories.

  • Arlo PWNS!

  • What's up with this crowd in the video? There's hardly any response to this great song! Arlo is an excellent performer and artist. I too love to share this song with my kids. We used to play Alice's Restaurant, the Pickle Song, and many of his others while traveling to visit the grandparents! I STILL love to put on Alice's Restaurant while prepping the bird on Thanksgiving! It's a tradition!

  • @howellfilm probably cause theyre all stoned chillin listining to an awesome song :P
