Removing the timer on grub is a bad habit because if you need to use a backup kernel you can't if your main one crashes (without running a live usb/cd and mounting the partition and edit the file)
I've gotta say this one turned out pretty well for me. I got an Asus Eee PC and it actually worked better out of the box than Eeebuntu. I get occasional flicker in battery mode and I can't change the MAC like in other distros, but so far those are the only wrinkles. If you have an Asus netbook, I'd still recommend trying both distros though.
When you first install ubuntu, it should recognize the resolution when it boots, and all your files remain the same unless you wipe the drive. (Some .exe programs may not work)
Netbook remix is just Ubuntu with a different user interface that is more compacted yet usable. Take a look at a few vids and you'll see what I mean. Instead of having a desktop, you get a sort of menu with a bunch of tabs containing launchers to different programs.
The NBR has the command line (CLI) access disabled. I found that baffling. Unless you know where a program is and can find it in Nautilus or Kommander, using the CLI is just faster. Especially in some situations where it's specifically called for. Like building apps from source.
Every UNR I've seen and used has always had easy access to the console. It's also got all the necessary stuff to build applications from source like GCC.
The only netbook specific distros I've seen recently where access to the console is purposely difficult or impossible. Is Linpus Lite and Sony's XMB.
The difference is only really in pre-installed packages and configuration. NBR is designed to run on netbooks so obviously the NBR package is pre-installed along with some other packages for netbooks (e-book reader, etc.). That being said, anything that can be installed on desktop ubuntu can be installed on NBR. Power settings can be manipulated, command line use knowledge helps, but there are good tutorials around for that. battery by default is slightly less than XP.
Now I've found the battery life on the netbooks to be greater with Ubuntu than with XP. Certainly this was the case with my Acer One.
XP was constantly thrashing the hard drive. I would assume that constant disk thrashing would certainly drain the much faster. Ubuntu doesn't do any disk thrashing at all, and allows the drive to stop spinning, so increasing battery life.
I'm not sure. If it doesn't by default, it can certainly be installed. NBR uses all the standard package repositories, it's only really a different set of pre-installed packages.
I'll admit, it's slightly slower than XP. XP does have some advantages over ubuntu, but this bootup is considerably faster than ubuntu 8.04, which was what I was comparing to.
Are you stupid?, if you didn't know the netbook is like a low end desktop pc but as a laptop so it may seem like a long time but for a netbook it boots hella fast, don't say shit like that if you know nothing.
I've actually since moved to the full desktop version of ubuntu on my netbook, so I probably won't be doing more videos concerning the NBR, but please go ahead and try it yourself, remember you don't have to install it if you just want to try it out.
1GB of RAM, but I'm not sure about adjusting CPU speed, I've never touched that.
Like I mentioned in the video, everything is stock, the ubuntu install finished only minutes before recording this and the only modification I made was disabling the GRUB countdown.
Almost everything works fine, Camera, Speakers, etc. The only thing that doesn't work out of the box was the Functions keys. That can be fixed I believe, but I didn't bother doing that myself.
Right, to anyone looking for full functions like from the factory... check out the ACPI scripts like Elmurto's from EEEuser website. You'll find it in the forums.

Would you happen to know if this operating system supports 1366x768 res?
I would like to put this operating system on my 3 year old laptop do I have to move my files or will it recognize them and incorporate them?

How does this "Ubuntu Netbook Remix" compare with the regular Ubuntu?
I want to try Ubuntu 9.10 on my NC10 but I'm not sure whether to install the netbook remix or the regular desktop version.

EBTL0947 2 years ago
that does sound very odd. If there's one place you really want CLI, it's on a small screen, low power machine, like a netbook
ability to go back to minimalist CLI is what makes linux worthwhle (although its nice all the desktop effects are drawing more people into using it)

xp boots in less than 30 seconds for me on my netbook. This seems less than impressive
failharderpl0x 2 years ago
XP is OS from 2001/02. People still using it are also less then impressive.
markoresko 2 years ago
Any why would people who are using XP be less than impressive?
Using Vista on a netbook certainly gives much less than impressive results. In fact it's awful on netbooks.

You should really use bootbooster, it works in linux too
Make partion that is unformatted with gparted with live cd then just do this on terminal 3 = X :
sfdisk --change-id /dev/sdX 3 ef
sfdisk --print-id /dev/sdX 3
enable bootbooster look for more info from the web.. it goes directly to grub.
