  • omg i remember this lol

  • It's an amazing video, but not a good ad.

  • ...where also definitely inspired by shadow masters Shigeo Fukuda and Diet Wiegman.

  • Tim Noble & Sue Webster!!!!!

  • Inspired on the art of Diet Wiegman?

  • i love this advert!!not very xmassy i agree, but somehow it seems perfect.last years was a total letdown

  • christmas advert , wheres the christmas in it ,i ll have a blue i mean sepia christmas without you,

  • yeah i remeber this one!

2007..... dosen't seem that long ago....

    :-) 6 months til christmas 2009:-)

    yay

  • i miss christmas

  • me too only a few months but and the countdown will be on again.

  • Everything a Christmas advert should be.

The song in the 2008 advert is great but the advert itself is generic and dull.

  • 'Shadows' is quite clever : )

I agree, the 2008 advert wasn't as good.

  • OMG, i can remeber this! It doesnt seem that long ago!

  • This advert - just like John Lewis itself - is classly.

  • lol i love all there adds

  • Clever

  • The 2008 is much better =)

  • oh i really like this one its a really good idea,, dno where they get them from

  • True its a very good idea, i guess from those people who come up with ideas for adverts like these and then get paid BUCKETLOADS!!

  • i like the song for 2008:)

  • Me tooo

  • a work of art!

  • it is a champagne flute!..you can see it clearly as the camera zooms in on the shadow!

  • I work at John Lewis. GO THERE! SPEND YOUR MONEY!

  • Merry Christams 2007 Form Russia to all of you!!!!!!!!!!

  • Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet - Morning Serenade

  • I knew as soon as I saw and heard this ad that it had to be Prokofiev. Makes a pleasant change from the usual crass, idiotic ads we get at Christmas. It's just a pity we don't have a John Lewis store. I'd almost be tempted to do my Christmas shopping there.

  • dis iz gr8 musik

  • Right at what point does that bit of music occur in Audabe? I've got Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet on cd and I've never hear that part!?

  • In various productions it seems to be cut or shifted around.

In the (Russian) version that I have it appears in Act 3 when Paris comes to wake Juliet for their wedding, before realizing she is dead, which sort of puts a downer on the whole serenade business.

I watched the Royal Ballet production on BBC over Christmas and it appeared to be cut, though I missed the first act.

  • At first you have no idea what it is going to be!

  • very good .advwrt

  • incredibly clever video, and the music is superb. well done John Lewis!

  • i loved this since i first saw it. i saw it again tonight and just leapt about the front room in my dressing gown and softy socks. up on the table and sofa too! lol

  • I watch this just for the music, which I ADORE.

  • does anyone else think that the music in this ad sounds like the music used in 'the land before time' (the 1988 cartoon film based on dinosaurs) ?

  • Yes it does, cause the composer to the land before time, James Horner, Ripped off alot of classical composers for that film including Prokofiev, Still great soundtrack.lol

  • yh thas it!!!!

land before time was a legend film

  • My puppy loves this advert. Whenever it comes on, he runs in, sits in front of the tv, and starts howling and singing to it. He loves the music.

  • whats the music called

  • morning serenade from romeo and juliet

  • Thanks so much for identifying the music!

  • Is it Prokofiev? What is it called?

  • I hardly think Prokofiev is a 'notch' up from Harry Potter.

Yeah there is lot of these kind of adverts but the music sets this one apart.

  • am I the only one who thinks that the beginning of this advert sounds like music from super mario galaxy?

  • THANS SO MUCH FOR POSTING! I love the music and wished someone would put it on YouTube.

    Thanks again!

  • Honda Cog. Bravia Balls. Skoda Cake. Guinness Dominoes. YAWN.

  • is tht ment 2 be a girl on a step wi a dog or sum sheperd or sumfin

    pls reply

  • I agree John Lewis are pretty rubbish when it comes to adverts, but remember its one of their first ones for couple of years, they don't even need to do adverts to get the sales!!!!!! The money used to broadcast it on TV could of been put towards our bonus! Extra 100 quid for everyone!

  • BTW jimmymanager, calling someone a bitch on youtube really suggests you ahve very little worthwhile to do with your time...

  • I agree with segat1, here. The Christmassy element is hardly clear. The shadow at the end looks a bit like a shepherd boy (like the long-haired ones you might see on some Xmas cards).

As for the music, it's a notch up from Harry Potter. John Lewis' marketing department needs to learn from M&S when it comes to Christmas ads, methinks!

  • I am fully against the opinions of segat1, she's a bitch.

  • I like the music What's it called...Plus thewhole thing is utterly brillant....

  • Details in the "About This Video" bit on the top right...

  • Thank you....Never noticed that when I asked ...

  • @spikesmrs The music is Prokofiev, from Romeo and Juliet ballet score. Cheers!

  • See, I don't get what a woman and a dog and a glass of wine has to do with Christmas. Is it suggesting singletons with pets and drinking problems shop at john Lewis?

  • No, their friends and family buy Christmas presents for them at John Lewis.

  • Still makes no sense. They really shoudl have thought it out a bit more... like having the nativity scene, or other festive scenes.

  • Dull clichés like that are what you get when you DON'T think things through.

  • I seriously doubt John Lewis really thought it out though, when lot of people seem to have missed the intended point....

  • It's not a glass of wine, why would a woman take her dog out for a walk with a glass of wine in her hand? I mean, think about it.

  • what's it meant to look like at the end? sorry, i'm a bit slow! :P

  • A woman with a dog and a glass of wine.

  • I really don't think it is a glass of wine though, I mean she's clearly out in the open - you can her scarf blowing in the wind and the snow falling in the sky and she appears to have her foot upon a rock. It doesn't make sense that she would go out with her dog on a leash and a glass of wine...I think it's just the top of a stick or umbrella.

  • woooo AMAZING..like that new walkman advert...what us people can do nowadays :D

  • Utterly brilliant.

  • looks like an orange ad

  • This director is a genius.
