People who work at john lewis do it for free... the wages are a joke! they harp on about the whole package like stupid things and councills when really people actually just want to pay their mortgage... no wonder the prosecutions page in the gazette is busy every week.... ha
I knew as soon as I saw and heard this ad that it had to be Prokofiev. Makes a pleasant change from the usual crass, idiotic ads we get at Christmas. It's just a pity we don't have a John Lewis store. I'd almost be tempted to do my Christmas shopping there.
In various productions it seems to be cut or shifted around.
In the (Russian) version that I have it appears in Act 3 when Paris comes to wake Juliet for their wedding, before realizing she is dead, which sort of puts a downer on the whole serenade business.
I watched the Royal Ballet production on BBC over Christmas and it appeared to be cut, though I missed the first act.
i loved this since i first saw it. i saw it again tonight and just leapt about the front room in my dressing gown and softy socks. up on the table and sofa too! lol
Yes it does, cause the composer to the land before time, James Horner, Ripped off alot of classical composers for that film including Prokofiev, Still great soundtrack.lol
I agree John Lewis are pretty rubbish when it comes to adverts, but remember its one of their first ones for couple of years, they don't even need to do adverts to get the sales!!!!!! The money used to broadcast it on TV could of been put towards our bonus! Extra 100 quid for everyone!
I agree with segat1, here. The Christmassy element is hardly clear. The shadow at the end looks a bit like a shepherd boy (like the long-haired ones you might see on some Xmas cards).
As for the music, it's a notch up from Harry Potter. John Lewis' marketing department needs to learn from M&S when it comes to Christmas ads, methinks!
See, I don't get what a woman and a dog and a glass of wine has to do with Christmas. Is it suggesting singletons with pets and drinking problems shop at john Lewis?
I really don't think it is a glass of wine though, I mean she's clearly out in the open - you can her scarf blowing in the wind and the snow falling in the sky and she appears to have her foot upon a rock. It doesn't make sense that she would go out with her dog on a leash and a glass of wine...I think it's just the top of a stick or umbrella.
omg i remember this lol

Everything a Christmas advert should be.
The song in the 2008 advert is great but the advert itself is generic and dull.

'Shadows' is quite clever : )
I agree, the 2008 advert wasn't as good.

does anyone else think that the music in this ad sounds like the music used in 'the land before time' (the 1988 cartoon film based on dinosaurs) ?

Is it Prokofiev? What is it called?

I hardly think Prokofiev is a 'notch' up from Harry Potter.
Yeah there is lot of these kind of adverts but the music sets this one apart.

am I the only one who thinks that the beginning of this advert sounds like music from super mario galaxy?

segat1 4 years ago
No, their friends and family buy Christmas presents for them at John Lewis.
zappomatic 4 years ago
Still makes no sense. They really shoudl have thought it out a bit more... like having the nativity scene, or other festive scenes.
segat1 4 years ago
Dull clichés like that are what you get when you DON'T think things through.
zappomatic 4 years ago 13
I seriously doubt John Lewis really thought it out though, when lot of people seem to have missed the intended point....
segat1 4 years ago
It's not a glass of wine, why would a woman take her dog out for a walk with a glass of wine in her hand? I mean, think about it.
