I would imagine the crew would have to use respirators... I'm not too sure sorry. As I understand it, even the crews that go through the tunnel in diesel's have respirators issued. (I'm don't know if they are used day to day or just for emergencies though. Anyone out there on the inter-webs know?
@JimTLonW6 I was on that trip and they kill the fire at either end and get towed through by diesel loco's. At the other end they fire up again and off they go.
@mrWeagle Thanks, long tunnels and steam engines are problematic at the best of times, and ironically Otira was intended not to be steam worked from the outset! It must be pretty awesome to see a steamer in the Waimakariri gorge!
In early days steam did not go thru Otira tunnell used Electric engines , now there is a system involving a door closing one end of tunnel and extraction fans
extra!

I'm amazed that they let steam into that tunnel! However do they ensure that the crew can breathe?

Yes the Resprators are used every time the diesel locos go through Otira tunnel.
There is some reaction of the exhaust gas and the moisture in the air.
I did hear that they very uncomfitble driving it through the tunnel.
Im not sure if this was the 1st time or they did it a few years before this video...
I think this was the 1st time? a steam loco went through Otira tunnel under its own steam since the tunnel was opened.
