Regarding Marilyn Monroe,Norma Jean Baker was much prettier, without the artificial hair color, and fake voice.Too bad we were not presented with the real woman.
It's amazing what a fine actress she was. I was drawn in to her character, and suspended in time and space until the film was over. One can have sympathy for her, and at the same time realize that she has lost her sense of reality.
Today is Genes birthday and I am watching all the wonderful tributes to Gene that have been uploaded since I first uploaded my own. The first youtubers' I found to upload any tributes to Gene where Mondbruder and Shanghibenny and thanks to them so did I,and now there are so many it is wonderful to see.
Gene Tierney and Veronica Lake were the most dazzling, most bewitching, most disarming starlets to ever light up a screen. Their cheekbones are almost identical; both had wickedly modish hairstyles..besides that, this film is certified Gold: it's quirky, absurdly well filmed, and Gene acts wonderfully...not that she needs to. Ava Gardner said: "When I first saw Lake and Tierney I thought, 'I hope they're not the extra's, cause I'd be out of a job." Exceptional, classy stuff, albeit loopy, too
@Sirgreaseflick but they were somewhat cold and aloof....I liked how Rita Hayworth could also embody that feline quality but could also be warm, magnetic, and erotic.
This woman is the embodiment of profound beauty. The rare beauty that comes only once in life. The first time I saw her in this movie, it's been so hard not to think about her. I absolutely loved her in this movie". Her acting prowess and everlasting beauty shall live on. She's the most radiant, talented, unique, and without a doubt the most beautiful actress I've ever witnessed.
You see BEFORE 1934 and AFTER the DEFACTO death of the production code in the early 60s there were a HUGE demand for for those "racy" and "provocative" films so the MONEY MAKING movie industry made "those" films.
So sorry to all YOU "world was so much more wholesome then" dreamers...... the "bad nasty moral movies" have been around FORever and reflect society.
Get over america was NEVER the land of the white picket fence...
ALL those snivelling about "oh movies were much more wholesome 'back then'" because the movies had to be "wholesome" cause of something called the "movie production code" that was self-censorship by the movie industry from 1934 to around the later 1950/early 60s.
BEFORE 1934 - including 20s silents - movies were being made that even surprises person in the present day for how "racy" and "pushing the limit" they were.
Not to mention, entertainment reflects the time. Because we're in an era where people blatantly go outside half dressed, do drugs and get pregnant, and all this other corruption, naturally, entertainment and entertainers of this era borrow from that (and abuse it; just listen to today's music and watch today's music videos).
I miss how movies were simply outstanding without cuss words, sex scenes and all other vulgarities. There are alot of movies these days that are great that have sex and violence in some scenes. But back in this era, movies were effortlessly amazing without all of that. I think great movies of the past relied more on actual acting and performing while great movies of today rely more on technique, like imagery and technology. There are some great modern actors and actresses though.
@honeybeeman He's not unfalthful. Ellen is pathologically jealous of anyone who comes between her and whoever she's obsessed with. She was pathologically (sexually?) obsessed with and possessive of her own father, and now her extreme jealousy is focused on her husband. Ellen murders her husband's crippled brother, drives away her own mother and sister, and even kills her own unborn baby out of jealousy. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that Ellen has psychopathy or malignant narcissism.
@honeybeeman He's not unfaithful. Thanks Frostbite, I can't think of a face more beautiful than hers. God knows how I love this woman... One of my all time favorite actress. She had that unknown and delicious aristocratic touch which made her unrepeatable. Divina Gene. Thanks again Frostbite :-)
@Roman888 yes GOD spent ALOT of time on her. it's like her face was beautiful crafted. sigh.... -_- ... now ME on the other hand thats a different story. LOL : D
when i watched laura i cried b/c she so beyond gorgeous....!! for some reason really really beautiful women who are also alluring do that to me. and im a female.
I think this is one of the 10 best films ever made ranking right up there with Vertigo and Mrs. Miniver. The scene on the staircase is my most unshakable film memory. Unfortunately, I know women like this.
The child's death is horrible. But the husband and sister are worse than she, appears to have caused. If he had loved most, she was not jealous of both.
In the end he goes to the cottage with his sister in sonde site would not go with her. It is disrespectful.
@Mitesoro111 That's EXACTLY what I think. It is DISGUSTING that he and the sister get together. And the sister wanted him ALL along. Therefore, Ellen's jealousy was not misplaced, just too strong. She went about it the wrong way. She could have tried to be "friends" with the husband somehow. but she can't change her nature.
Either way, I absolutely hate the ending and it makes me sick to my stomach.
@stitchgrl777 No, I think Ellen was genuinely sick, it had something to do with her relationship with her father, something is not talked about in the movie. But the way she acts, it's not only jealousy. She didn't want her husband to be with anybody else, she wanted him only to be hers and she was ready to kill if someone stood in the way, that's sick.
Gene had the better body...in fact I would go with face as well. However many would consider it a toss up, add Ava, Hedy, and Rita...goodness, now the monkey wrench has really been thrown in. How can one actually choose?
@sampopular Yes, I agree. Marilyn did not have to overdo it so much. Had she looked just a bit conservative and as lovely with her hair, for example, as it was in her last film, Something's Got to Give, she would have done better, I think. Gene Tierney had a deep earthy sensuous quality along with the slim face with such symmetrical aquiline features and those green, or emerald eyes she was completely exotic. Warning,Gene can grow on you the more you watch her. Notice her perfect intonation.
@sampopular haha! those were my first thoughts too after seeing her in this movie and thinking of other classic beauties. She really is prettier than Marilyn.
God she was gorgeous.

Lovely as she is in her own right, costar Jeanne Crain ("Ruth") is no match for this Gene ("Ellen.")

The only comparable actress today is Michelle Pfeiffer - same great facial bone structure & hauntingly beautiful eyes.
