the problem is that she was so against the grain. her music is incredible, but her display at the award show (can't remember which, was it MTV?) probably didn't do well for her place with recording studios. see, the problem is that if you don't have the money to self-produce your record, along with everything else required to push a major record out, and the record companies don't like you (or won't sign you), youre fucked.

One unfortunate by-product of a very brilliant video (Mark Romanek's 4 Criminal) is that it did capture the heroin chic sensibility too well. Apple had an issue w/ anorexia and so.. people did say she was a junkie. However, having unfortunately seen what that shit does to ppl. I don't think she was ever a junkie. She is frank in interviews and I can't recall her ever addressing a substance abuse problem in an interview. Nah.....
