In the novels the Space jockeys hate the xenomorphs and go to huge lengths to kill them, they are extremly smart and enter the mind of billy (Newt) and drive her to almost insanity... they have extremely deadly weapons, One of them kills more than 500 xenomorphs in a couple shots of his weapon.

They are supposed to have existed more then 10 million years before humans and are somehow related to the predator's technology. To my knowledge, it's actually one of his opriginal designs for xenomorphs. Giger didn't just suddenly come to a conclusion on what to make them look like, he had quite a few versions done before the final product. It's generally what happens when anything is designed. You should see all the varying predators. XP
