And even in the early-2000 you could buy a portable player that could read CD-Rs which was a cheap "get-around" for around $25 USD. The times, they have changed... ;-D

I think he choose it for a practicular reason. You should really look at the lyrics and compare it to the scene. He wasn't joking when he said it was a personal statement. It was really a reflection of his sentiments towards his competitor. I think he feelt that jared letos character was devalueing his lifestyle by being too similar to him. Also the music itself meshes very well with the charcters lifestyle.
