  • Really kind of you to show these tips , Many Thanks Gavin

  • can i do somethin like that on a video ?? if any1 know how, massage me plz)

  • @thisisryker I know how to do it but i won't give you a massage

  • i thought it's really and beging :D

  • I tried this and it looked pretty good, so i pulled in a friend and he thought it was a miniature model! XD This is awesome!

  • i would do him

  • Can I just take this opportunity to thank you Gavin for all the interesting videos you have put together for us. Like many I struggled to make any sense or headway with photoshop. Your videos set me on the path of understanding and as photoshop unfolds your projects still keep me interest and on a good learning curve!

    So thanks a lot.

  • wow. incredible. the accent.

  • can't wait to try it out! :) great tutorials :)

  • All aboard the Gavtrain!

  • I'm number 210 000 to view this vid bitchessss!

  • Sounds like Rick Gervais.

  • sorry but what version of photoshop are you using?

  • @Nacho6037

I think he's using some kind of CS-version? I have the CS5 and it's very similar... But not really

  • @Nacho6037 - Since this video is from 2009, I'm assuming he's using Photoshop CS4 or CS5.

  • "Theh weh ahr"

  • Awesome! Thank you very much for the tutorial.

  • Great ! Works !

  • Amazing. Works with GIMP too.

  • very nice and clear explanation :)

  • Your voice sounds autotuned... good tutorial btw :)

  • 4:47 "Let's go in nice and tight on the bush"

  • @ShinnAsucka hahahaha

  • Thanks for your tutorial, it helped me to work out how to make a verion with After Effects. Keep up the good work

  • or you can go to tiltshiftmaker (dot) com ...

  • anyone else noticed he said "nice and tight on the bush"?

  • This is really nice and interesting... I am more into using the lens to shoot this.... but this tutorial makes me understand more the concept behind making a nice miniature model photographs

  • you would find a very pleasant releif in airflow between all your talking by simply unbutton your most upper shirt button.

  • thx for tut!

  • My problem is that I want do blur something out. But if I draw the white color on the mask it wouldnt be blury. If I try do sharp something it works well. Someone can help?

  • @DarknesVamp You should use the color black on the mask, white is what you DON'T want the tool to affect. Hope that helped.

  • @DarknesVamp On the lens blur page, do not select "Layer mask" but "None", contrary what Gavin tells you, otherwise the mask won't be adjustable.

  • @marizzz81 No, thats not correct. If you select none, everything will be blurred... Layer Mask is what you want to select.

  • @DarknesVamp try to invert the colours

  • Tanks! and... get a mac!!

  • Thank you mate easy to follow easy to understand.

    Many thanks

  • thanks gavin, its always nice to see a kind person like you share your knowledge of photography with the world! Cheers!

  • One thing I would suggest would be to work non-destructively on the background layer with a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer and use smart filters for the sharpness. Regardless, this is a great tutorial from one of my favorite photographer Youtubers. :)

  • Thanks

  • i figured out how to do this in elements 7.

  • Thanks!!!

  • LOL "lets go in nice and tight on the bush" but props for the video

  • i created an account so just i can say THANK YOU to Mr. Gavin Hoey.. great tutorial. :)

  • Thanks Gavin..easy to follow and it worked(I used a Paris scene shot from Arc De Triumph)

  • I love his accent!

  • thank you so much for this

  • I'm a Photoshop noob but you make this look as something even I could manage!

  • hey gavin, awsome tutorial... i have a slight problem tho... i can't seem to blurr out then ends of the lines that the gradient tool makes, does that make any sense even?? lol thanks gavin!

  • whoa you've got a jumpy pc

  • You make this look like anybody can do it. Great speaking voice, positive and comfortable tone... Awesome video with just enough explanation; thank you Mr. Hoey!

  • Great tutorial, very helpful. I enjoy the surreal quality photos take on. I recently saw an exhibit of tilt-shift where all the pictures were of car accidents. Gave me the sense as if we were ghost viewing the scene of our own accident shortly after exiting the body...Quite beautiful really... Oh, and i can't resist: 4:49 "...Let's go in nice and tight on the bush" HAHAHHAHA!!!

  • i'd hop on the gavtrain ;)

  • best instructor ever :)

  • awesome stuff!

  • Thanks

  • thanks a lot! veryyy well done tutorial

  • и нашлись же 11 уродов!

  • AT 0:29 he says "of course this is all fake, none of this is real. It's a real photograph."

Huh? Maybe my hearing is bad.

  • @RIPEorROTTING Your hearing is fine, what he means is that what you are seeing is fake, there are no miniature models, only real-size trees and a bridge... But I think you figured that out yourself even before posting your comment! Cheers!

  • This is a selective blur tutorial, not a tilt shift tutorial.

I like the tutorial. But its not tilt shift.

  • dont need layers

  • this is rediculous, if you dont have a tilt shift lense then youre gonna have to find a picture that was taken with one and blur it, which is pointless. buy a tilt shift lense it is the only way to get the effect.

  • love the BBC type pauses @ 24.,27. and 30.

  • I watched three german tutorials and always got something wrong.

Here the stuff came to live. Thanks!

  • nice and tight on the bush! omg i laughed so hard

  • ELLO!

  • i cant get the gradient effect to come up in the mask when its hilighted and selected!!!

  • Sweet! I can make my own adultswim bumps!

  • @Iknowbetterthanthat I thought that as well , I'll try it out sometime soon

  • Great tutorial! Very well explained, and easy to follow.

But isnt it easier to just use the brush all the way, instead of the reflective gradient?

Please correct me if im wrong!

  • спасибо, очень полезный урок!

  • how to you apply them to a sequence of photos, instead of one by one applying?

  • MUCH easier! : tiltshiftmakerDOTcom/

  • best !

  • This was awesome. Thank you !

  • tilt shift is the best!!!!

  • wow, great method! I've saw a tutorial before that never worked for me, but this one really explains what you have to do and how to give a good result. Thanks!

  • that bush at 4:50 looked like weed when he zoomed in

  • 0:01 "Oh Hai, I didn't see you there, I'm Gavin Hoey. You may know me from such tutorials as..."

  • @usefullstuff whahaha lol

  • @usefullstuff lol

  • @usefullstuff Lmfaoooo

  • I'm getting this program for christmas. It is awesome!

  • Thank god, I though it was just my computer that was slow at processing

  • Hi Gavin, thank you for the tutorial. I could not use the gradient tool while in layer mask mode. I have tried several times. Do you have any idea how that can happen? I use Ps CS4 Mac.

  • cheers

  • what photoshop do u use? how much was it? can i download it?

  • @jjanglover12 ... wow...

  • That bridge is within the Stourhead estate owned by the National Trust

  • That's so cool!

...Now all I need to do is get photoshop.

  • Very nice video, keep it up! :)

  • "of course this is all fake, non of this is real. it's a real photo" LOGIC FAIL. haha, i know what he means tho.

  • perfect tutorial, easy to follow will try this out definately

  • do you have anything on white balancing such as whiter teeth?

  • the best video yet

  • well done , what.

  • To be more exact: you are not faking a tilt shift lens, you are just faking the miniature look ;)

With a real tilt shift lens the tree would not have been sharp all the way to the top, like it is in your vid, but would be blurry at the same hight as the background above the bridge.

    Looks very cool!

  • Thank you!!!! Useful!!!

  • you have a slow computer!

  • Thanks, man!

    You're aweome!

  • nice video, great explanation

  • nice video,

  • why cant I use the lens blur filter? it's gray, I can't click on it..

  • you are the best in explaining everything just as simple as possible!

  • latest cameras have this effect as a scene option, be interesting to see if they can match a manual job using layers, probably not as you wont be able to adjust focus areas afterward.

  • Thanks for this tutorial Gavin.;) can you make one into premier for a video???

  • Nice one Gavin...well explained ;)

  • ?.....Followed the direction, but noticed that there is another thin sharp line below the one that I selected..?

  • cool, thnx!

  • Hey Gavin,

in your tutorial, you unmask the tree left of the bridge up to the top. Looking at other tutorials, i noticed that 90% of them just do the initial layer and that's it. I think that Tilt-Shift-Lenses are just like the initial layer, blurring like a gradient, ignoring the tree wich is the same distance away at the bottom as at the top (which you try to consider, by unblurring it). What is the right way to do it?

  • This is one of the better tutorials in Photoshop. The guy knows photoshop. Looking forward to more lessons!

  • i like it too. Great job

  • can you do this with movies?

  • @MusicBySav yes you can.

  • thanks!

  • your voice is so annoying , i would love to punch you

  • Awesome vid!!!..I wonder who the few douche bags were that voted thumbs down and can't appreciate a nice free tutorial

  • Many thanks! It's like having Gordon Ramsay doing Photoshop on a NICE day! Just found you & can't wait to see your other tutorials.

  • This is awesome. Thank you for the tutorial ...

  • at first i was thinking "here we go, another wanker who thinks he knows what he's doing" but that was amazing... i liked it, shame on whoever doesnt

  • This is a fantastic video! Clear to the point and very well done! Carry on doing these videos its amazing and doesnt go unnoticed! ; )

  • Very nice Gavin!

  • thanks alot!

  • Nicely done tutorial.

I did use the same filter/adjustments but just didnt use any layers. So this tutorial showed me how I can clarify things like in this example the tree and bush. Helped a lot.

What u didnt mention but I think it does can help a bit is to use -> Image -> Adjustments -> Curves. It is not that important but can sometimes have a nice effect.

    Thanks again.

  • thanks!!

  • Excellent . I like the pace of your speaking - fast and straight to the point!

  • can you do this in photoshop elements??

  • Sweet, glad that I have a quad core, so it is faster when bluring :D

  • very effective!

  • Sweet. I want to try this for a game background :)

  • maybe somebody can help me i'm using ps cs4. I wanna create picture where object which are placed in center are B&W , but us more to pictures boarder than more colours are visible (smooth coulor blend from B&W to colours)

  • @dano

New layer, desaturate to B&W, mask out area you want to show colours through from background layer (selection tools, gradient or brush).... tah-dah. Search video tut library for layer masks, desaturate, colour to b&w... etc.

  • Make a duplicate of a layer you want to have B&W, process it as a B&W. Then just by using layers masks make a radial gradient (2nd icon from left). That's all. Just remember to set white to black gradient. ;)

  • I wonder if you could do the opposite and make miniature sets appear to be large? Maybe for low budget films etc.

  • then you just have to make that happen when you are shooting... make sharp part blurry is easy; not so easy if you want to make blurry part sharp, as information is not there...

  • well miniatures shot normally appear to be large normally, because you dont have any regular sized object to compare it to. And they are not just for small budget films, alot of large sets in the lord of the rings such as the towers were not cgi like alot of people think but well built miniatures.

  • @nickeax what you need is a big DOF - take few pictures focusing on different areas, take sharp parts out, combine then - done.

  • @nickeax if you ever find out do tell me :P

  • Right on!

  • when i drag the gradient, it doesn't show up in the blank box. HELP!!

  • @ccalamuss never mind!!!

  • It would be better to just not include the tree to begin with when blurring.

  • i tried almost the same thing exactly, but in Lens Blur preview it look better then when it is after clicking OK...

    what am i doing wrong?

  • @Riezz73 same have you found out what is happening?^

  • super cool tutorial, i love it......i wonder if changing the sky for a different background would make it look more believable ??? ;)

  • nice

  • ur awsome!!!!!

  • Thank you for explaining how this effect is created!

  • I recognise that location, one of my fav places in hte south of the UK. Stourhead Gardens. Great tutorial, helped a lot thanks :-)

  • nice

  • this is excellent, how could you adapt this to perhaps.. video footage? After effects? Cheers finn

  • @finn123sk8: That was my question, too. Ever since I first saw this effect on two sci-fi shows I've been hooked ("John Doe" - in between some of the scenes & "Dollhouse" - opening sequence after the first few minutes..both are on the Hulu website). Have you seen the mockmoon2000 channel here? Don't walk- **run!** Amazing!! I've watched every 'miniature' video he or she has posted. They also mention the software used in the info on their channel page. Would like to learn *how* to do this.

  • what version of photoshop is this?

  • It looks like PS CS4 but I've done this on PS CS3

  • fffake!

  • why?

  • i just like the way he says that word...

  • No need to buy the $1000 lens.

  • Really I Became A Big Fan Of U.........

  • this helps a lot! thank you for the great job.

  • I only have photoshop 5 haha! :(

  • my gradient tool is not applying...????? HELP

  • Thanks for the great tutorial! I've been wanting to try this effect.

  • Fake :D

  • Great tutorial! the best on tilt shift, i´ve seen others but with yours everything was so easy to learn. congrats!

  • very nice and smooth tutorial, thx

  • Good presentation!

  • i knew that technique before and i wanted to make a tut as well but i didn't know that u can also blur and unblur some parts of picture so... thanks :D

  • But using a Blur tool is much easier and you can make much more accurate images.

  • Thanks i have been wanting to learn this,

    very well presented
