There is a paint detail in Spore that really makes your creature look like it has been scratched up if it is colored red. I'm not sure exactly where it is, though.
Apparently, the game used the wrong texture. This kind of glitch is more frequent in games which are modded (because it is easy to make a mistake). This is the first time I see such a thing in Spore though. In this case, it's probably a case of corrupted video memory. Deleting the cache files and restarting the game would be my first guess.
