I saw Sha Na Na four times in concert in the 1970's. Mr. Contardo is the only singer that made my mouth drop. Has to be the greatest singer I ever heard. As for the comment below. The Earls did the original "Remember Then" and "Never". I assume they used the same bass singer.
@Tonithenightowl normal service will now resume, sadly i looked into who he married and that sweet sexy image is now definitly not so sweet, im very sad...however it doesnt take away the fact that he had/has a fantastic voice and i will always be a fan, but maybe not so love/lust struck :(
@noosmum Please explain? I'm not sure what you mean. You can email me at Tonithenightowl@aol.com. What could possibly make you think that? Who did he marry that would make you be sad? I'm perplexed here, please get back to me.
@noosmum who cared who he was married to. the lady is now dead and Johnny has remarried. A woman is not her family. old news and very yesterday. Johnny contardo is and always was a class act you never ever hear him be idrespectful of a lady and this past summer he gave an interview and said very kind things not only his first wife but her mother and his own. class act. I would not want to be judged if I had a family some people might look down on.
@kyldy my comment was in no way meant to offend u or anybody, just , i was disappointed cos the sweetness was slightly tarnished at that point, plus i was trying to stop my obsession of the man, however this lasted less than 24 hours, and it wasnt a case of looking down on anybody, as they say glass houses and all that, my family and indeed myself are not perfect, i apologise if u were offended x
@noosmum none taken my dear no apolgies needed. I understand there is a contardoaholic group!! me I just belong to R&R anonymous. cant spell either tonight take care.,
Johnny Contardo in my opinion is one of the greatest vocal singers bar none. If Sha Na Na was just a decade earlier, they would of topped the charts. Bowser was also fantastic.
@doowop5955 They are the greatest cover band ever. They did covers better than the originals.Contardo is off the charts fantastic. Why it never came to pass for him outside Sha na na is still a mystery. Bad management? Bad timing? Johnny can sing anything. He's known for his covers when he should have had his own.
@ROGER459 Yes, he would lol. Johnny has a voice that ranks among the greatest tenors of rock and roll. Then take that style and delivery and well of course he would win. That goes without saying.
The only Sha Na Na member to write me back was Denny and I had to write to him where he teaches at the University of Akron law school. Just left me a short note on what he was doing now. Tried to write to Scott Simon on Facebook, but he wrote me back stating that since he didn't know me personally, he would not add me as a friend to his Facebook page. He was really sweet about it, though and thanked me for my kind words to him.
@cmt39 I'm sure they are not all like that. Johnny Contardo is very generous to his fans. Don't know about the others. That was nice of Denny to answer you. It may also have to do with lack of time to get to everyone that connacts them. Can't be easy being famous. Most of us will never know.
This is one of my Johnny and Bowser fave's. Both are consummate performers. However, Johnny stole our hearts. He could deliver a love song like no other.
Johnny's voice never ceases to amaze me. It's so over the top fantastic. Also the control Bowser has for those low notes is amazing. I will have to look up the original but I find it hard to believe there could be a better version than this one.
best falsetto I have ever heard and I think I ever well it is so clear!!! also finally realized what they say "lock a lotta lips " in case anyone else has been wondering :D
Is it wrong that I like this version done by Sha-Na-Na slightly better then the original? Maybe it has something to do with Johnny? lol I love his voice and he's hot too. :)
@ThisOldCubGal Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the original version of "Never" was by Larry Chance & The Earls? I'm not completely sure, I heard their version first before i heard this wonderful version by Sha-Na-Na. :)
Well of course he is also the sexiest, has the best hair, dreamy eyes, gorgeous smile, I could go on and on but I'll just stop there before I get in trouble!
Now I'm trying to behave......it's not working...I can't resist.....YES I want to run my hands all over his chest, and run my fingers through his hair, and ......
Not on DVD, can find some cd's on Amazon. The current Sha Na Na only has 3 (?) of the origional members. Screamin Scott on piano, Jocko on drums, Donny on vocals
Does anyone know what they say right after "I'll never kiss your fingertips?" I swear it sounds like something about potato chips but I don't think that is right. Thanks.
This is the "New York Sound." A lot of the hot groups from about 1955 until the British Invasion got their start "street singin'" a capella, filling the background with strange words and sounds to make a bed for the lead. Doo Wop is part of NYS.
"Who Put The Bomp" was poking fun at NYS, but was made a big hit by all the couples whose "our song" was NYS.
The other big American style was "West Coast," such as the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Gary Lewis, etc, while Motown took over from NYS.
OMG - it has sounded the same to me after all htis time, LMAO! I am assuming we are hearing it incorrectly - but thanks for asking cause I thought I was nuts.....
Listened to groups from the 50's and through the 80's. Heard many great singers, Johnny Contardo I rank number one. I cannot sing a lick, but if I could sing like someone it would Mr. Contardo. My second pick would be Freddy Curci from Sheriff and Alias. I was fortunate enough to see Sha Na Na four times in concert in the 70's.
Freddy my Love!! He did have a wonderful voice!! He should still be with us!! Him and Elvis!! But our beloved Johnny gets the benefit of all of our attention. Hope he doesn't flee the country...LOL
Wow. I love these guys. My dad introduced me to them a few weeks ago and I just love their music! I should have been born back then, I love this music way more than the stuff nowadays..
It may be cheesy now but damn these guys can harmonize! I grew up watching this now im in my 30's and introducing Sha Na Na to my 2yr old nephew and he's diggin it big time!
thank you for posting! i wish tvland or nick@nite would air Sha Na Na, reintroduce melody in music to the younger generation

actually the barbershop quartet or quintet in this case was influenced by early african american slave songs and african american street music which was then appropriated by the hegamonic white community this is the history of American popular music from blues, jazz and rock n roll it originated in the black community first then filtered it way into white mainstream go to school you rubes
Thanks for sharing. IMO, Sha Na Na's version of this song is actually better than the version by Larry Chance and the Earls. Johnny Contardo has a wonderful vocal range - very expressive.

I always enjoyed hearing Johnny sing, he had the best voice, although he always reminded me of a Billy Crystal. But seeing Johnny and Bowzer today is weird seeing them with suits and gray hair. Last I saw Bowzer he had put on weight but he was the same ole Bowzer, joking and full of laughs, Johnny is a really good chef now. Great group and I have always enjoyed Sha Na Na.
I remember my Dad having a live Sha Na Na double or triple LP in the early 70's, they also did a TV special in the UK around the same time. I don't remember Johnny Contardo being with them at that time (He really does have a tremendous voice), but nevertheless an amazing FUN band that did everything tongue in cheek but with obvious affection. Thanks for posting all these great vids.
Has anyone else noticed -- when Johnny starts singing the studio audience begins to clap, but Bowzer is in the background doing his "No-No" choreography, wagging his finger, so the audience quiets down right away, as if Bowzer was shushing them?
I did notice how they started and stopped pretty quickly; didn't really notice Bowzer as most times I'm looking at Johnny, but that is pretty ironic. However, while I appreciate how much the audience appreciates them, sometimes I think it takes away from the song. Not always; you can tell the audience really liked this one.
Donny was always my favorite when I watched the show as a 5-8 year old, but YouTube (thanks for posting all these videos, faerydancer) has made me see that Johnny has a great set of pipes!
I was only about 4 when they started on TV. Johnny has always been my favorite since the beginning. I sing myself and now that I'm older, I can appreciate that voice more than ever. I met him two months ago and his voice has not changed much. It turns out he's a very nice man as well.
Dang I swear all the songs Sha Na Na sings sound just as good as the original. Johnny's voice is amazing and his voice fits the whole Doo Wop feel to it. I'm only 19, but my parents told me about Sha Na Na 11 years ago and I've been a fan ever since. :)
Johnny's still got that incredible voice today! I always loved that doo-wop style of singing and the Sha na na show came along just in time in my life to keep the admiration going. Good stuff!
I'll be there in Philly next month too. I agree about the rating-how would I have known when I was 4 (my age in '77 when they debuted)? That rating would have come in handy on "Let the Good Times Roll".
Sha Na Na was a conceived as a "Parody Band", but with Johnny Contardo singing lead on this quintessential Do Wop song they actually sound better than the original Earls. My daughters were kindergarten age when Sha Na Na had their weekly TV show and they used to love the music. Their in their 30's now, but they still love listening to "my music".
Novadays with that kind of music is allmost impossible to get famous and that is very sad...thanks for heavy metal bands (I listen them too),but I hope, one day This kind of music will come back!
Amen! I was just a little kid when they were on TV, but I sure remembered watching their show. And Johnny made quite the impression on me, even then. Now that I'm an adult, I can appreciate more than just his good looks. What a phenomenal voice! And from what I've seen, it's just as good today. Thanks, faerydancer!

The first time i saw Sha na na was on AFN television whilst i was stationed in Berlin with the allied forces back in 1978 - 1980
Seeing them again is just fantastic,my late wife and i used to love watching their show .
Great guys, and thanks to you tube i can now watch them again , this time in colour.

Used to see Sha Na Na whenever they came to the Philly area. Practically knew their whole show. Sure wished they did shows with these kind of songs.

Has anyone else noticed -- when Johnny starts singing the studio audience begins to clap, but Bowzer is in the background doing his "No-No" choreography, wagging his finger, so the audience quiets down right away, as if Bowzer was shushing them?
crunchfunkel 3 years ago

Is it any wonder!! Bowzer is the scariest bassman that has ever taken to a stage!! I'd sure hush if he told me to. lol.

Good stuff!

Was this song ever released on CD by anyone?
Drogmir 3 years ago
Not by Sha Na Na--to the best of my knowledge. However, the original was performed by The Earls.

Johnny should have come with a parental guidance rating, I fell at 14,he was my first fan crush...Still see him at Meet and Greets!!

No way on earth can ShaNaNa touch Larry Chance & The Earls on anything. Never ever!!!

Novadays with that kind of music is allmost impossible to get famous and that is very sad...thanks for heavy metal bands (I listen them too),but I hope, one day This kind of music will come back!

Let's all thank "faerydancer" for the clip and many more. "Sha Na Na is here to stay"
