Isn't it wonderful how the Kramer guitar company is now owned by Gibson? I mean sure they're like the only guitar company that takes a lifetime to announce their prices but they're not half bad. Loving EVH's playing though....
Too bad my guitar hero went south for the forever. I laid my honor on the line so many times, saying eddie was the guitar god but he's severely let me down for the past decade :(
everyone should know that Les Paul was EVH's Godfather and that was the teacher that EVH was hot for. He showed how hoy he was every time he picked up a guitar and recalled how Les paul made possible all those tricks.
everyone should know that Les Paul was EVH's Godfather and that was the teacher that EVH was hot for. He showed how hoy he was every time he picked up a guitar and recalled how Les paul made possible all those tricks.
I meant when EVH appears on a talk show or as a guest star.....he almost invariably plays Panama or Hot for Teacher or some other song he wrote.
Of course, as a band, VH did a lot of covers, including a lot of Kinks covers the public has never heard them play and Big Bad Bill is Sweet William Now.
Pretty awesome. It's easy to forget what a great guitarist EVH is. There's a lot of bias against some of the music of his time, as evidenced by Rolling Stone's magazine listing of him at 70 on the all-time great guitarist list. Seriously? That tide will turn, though, and future generations will discover and appreciate his hyperbolic style, technical wizardry, and all-around fun.
What's the deal with Eddie Van Halen always having to play one of his own songs whenever he makes a guest appearance, not matter with whom he's jamming? Can't he ever learn a pick-up song or standard or something?
@Kamandi2008 You ever seen him with Richie Sambora on the All Star Garage Band? He plays NONE of his own songs there, and he tears every one of them up.

Eh, hes ok. It's all done with pedals anyway, no real talent needed. Now John Mayer, there is a man's mans guitar player. A catalac of men one could call him, a demigod among humans is what another would say.
@chaplan76 lmfao.. yeah i see a whole generation of guitar players saying how john mayers playing changed them...poor johny probably cant even play the opening of "eruption" let alone do 1 finger tap...lets see Les Paul, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Randy Rhodes and Eddie Van Halen....sounds about right..lol
This really brought back memories. It was aired on HBO back in the early 90's featuring Les Paul and many many other artists including BB King, Pink Floyd Steve Miller Band, and of course Eddie Van Halen, along with several other artists. I have watched the entire video literally hundreds of times and know each note by heart. I recorded it on VHS and still have the original copy
@spiderbass65 Not to mention his work with The Mahavishnu Orchestra with guitarist John McLaughlin (The Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire albums will blow your mind) and his work on the music for Miami Vice!!!
That's a Kramer buddy. The only Charvels he used were the VH2 guitar and the striped guitars that he plays on stage and sells them on Ebay that's it. He mainly uses his Wolfgangs and he started playing the Frankenstrat again. Yeah.
@sarg8 he didnt put anythng on Ebay, the Yellow and Black was buried with Dimebag, they made a replica of the red white and black, which he uses now, and he used the Wolfgangs
He does some harmonics on the 5th fret with the whammy bar already down a bit, dives more with the whammy bar, and shakes it when he comes back up with the whammy bar, while letting a little bit of feedback come out of his amp (hard to do this while playing quietly). And he has delay. And he's Van Halen lol.
Thanks for the reply WENGERGOONER... I've looked at this vid a lot, and I'm sure it isn't Al. Al's style is a little more "melodic" to me, and the unfortunately the one or two camera shots they get of him aren't clear enough.
Be careful about who you are talking about. Jan Hammer and Tony Levin are two of the most respected musicians of their respective instruments (keyboard and bass) and can play things eddie wouldn't know where to begin, for example jazz and jazz fusion.
I agree....to an extent....Eddie is a very accomplished piano and keyboard player in his own right. He also plays drums and bass. Saying that Jan and Tony can play things that Eddie wouldn't know where to begin is reaching a bit. Tony and Jan are very good though.
Oh man trust me, I am a HUGE EVH fan, he's the reason I started playing guitar, and I'll be the first to say he has done huge amounts and pushed boundaries in his playing, in the rock idiom. Outside of this comfort zone I do not know how well he would fair up to guys like Tony Levin and Jan Hammer who know all to well about playing outside comfort zones.

I have a question for anyone who can play the beginning of this video. What exactly is he doing in the beginning under the guitar and with the tuners?
dubrite...firstly plucking the tremolo springs which creates a nasty reverberated twang,..then picking the strings above the nut, (between nut and tuners) to get high metallic 'ping' sound. after that depressing the tremolo arm while tapping the string onto the pickup,..the rest is elementary.
I agree Mike Anthony gets his ass kicked off the stage by Tony Levin, I also agree that Mike Anthony really doesn't get much credit for the VanHalen Sound. His bass solos were effects shows not chops. I would love to see Jan Hammer and EVH hook up. Eddie needs to do a solo guitar album, Like Jeff Beck, and even Neil Schon of Journey. Jeff Becks There and Back is still one of my favorite albums of ALL TIME
He's doing Cathedral at the beginning of the video. He uses the single volume knob to swell up and down in loudness, along with a delay-phaser (somewhere around -94b) to produce the sound. It's actually quite a simple song to play.
that wasnt his custom fender--that was his Kramer the company he sued 2 endorse. This was from a looonngggg time ago! Im guessing at leat 15 yrs ago. I dont even know if he can afford one of his 25,00 dollar custom fenders!!

Yes the Bassist is Tony Levin of Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, and John Lennon's last album double fantasy.
Jan Hammer is of Mahavishnu orchestra, Miami Vice TV series and Jeff Beck fame.
Now, who is the drummer? I think I have seen him with Hall and Oates, Carly Simon and Foghat.
I know him as Eddie Zyne, but may have a different "Stage name".
Can anyone enlighten me?

1. 15 years was not a long time ago 50,000 B.C. was.
2. He had over 250 million dollars by 1987. Hell yes he can afford his Frankenstein. His car alone is probably about 200 thousand dollars anyway.

Kinda funny/interesting, the video is titled "Les Paul Tribute" but he's playing his custom fender.
dadslbm 4 years ago
The tribute is to Les Paul the guitarist and not to the Les Paul the guitar.

Again, I read it on another comment, is the drummer Jerry Marota? The brother of great Rick Marota? (drummer that played on Steely Dan´s records)

The solo at the beginning - 25 seconds into this video clip - It's called "Cathedral". It's on the Diver Down album.
