  • Diver Down, 1984, and Fair Warning maybe? All wrapped up into a single jam.

  • fucking living legend

  • damn that riff @ 0:30 is awsomely delayed

  • Isn't it wonderful how the Kramer guitar company is now owned by Gibson? I mean sure they're like the only guitar company that takes a lifetime to announce their prices but they're not half bad. Loving EVH's playing though....

  • he using strat type guitar Tribute to Les Paul

  • Too bad my guitar hero went south for the forever. I laid my honor on the line so many times, saying eddie was the guitar god but he's severely let me down for the past decade :(

  • everyone should know that Les Paul was EVH's Godfather and that was the teacher that EVH was hot for. He showed how hoy he was every time he picked up a guitar and recalled how Les paul made possible all those tricks.

  • I meant when EVH appears on a talk show or as a guest star.....he almost invariably plays Panama or Hot for Teacher or some other song he wrote.

Of course, as a band, VH did a lot of covers, including a lot of Kinks covers the public has never heard them play and Big Bad Bill is Sweet William Now.

  • Pretty awesome. It's easy to forget what a great guitarist EVH is. There's a lot of bias against some of the music of his time, as evidenced by Rolling Stone's magazine listing of him at 70 on the all-time great guitarist list. Seriously? That tide will turn, though, and future generations will discover and appreciate his hyperbolic style, technical wizardry, and all-around fun.

  • He is hot for teacher !

  • tony Levin ripping up the bass,as well.

  • He's making love to the guitar, and the guitar is enjoying it...

  • What's the deal with Eddie Van Halen always having to play one of his own songs whenever he makes a guest appearance, not matter with whom he's jamming? Can't he ever learn a pick-up song or standard or something?

  • @Kamandi2008 You ever seen him with Richie Sambora on the All Star Garage Band? He plays NONE of his own songs there, and he tears every one of them up.

  • @Kamandi2008 you havin a laugh mate? ice cream man, pretty woman, dancing in the street and of course the industry standard baby please dont go, EVH plays a lot of covers

  • Genial Tony Levin Fantastic............

  • fucking awesome , evh is the gratest of all time

  • Tony Levin and EVH? A fanboy's dream! Shame about Jan's cheesy keytar tone. All three are superb technicians.

  • Now I believe that EVH was PG's greatest influence. at 1:28 I heard PG do this lick on one of his live performances.

  • @benchmat yea you also heard PG play a Jimi,Clapton.Page,Iommi style lick that night as well ,lol

  • @chaplan76 lmfao.. yeah i see a whole generation of guitar players saying how john mayers playing changed them...poor johny probably cant even play the opening of "eruption" let alone do 1 finger tap...lets see Les Paul, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Randy Rhodes and Eddie Van Halen....sounds about right..lol

  • @watmeworry4 Shut up or I'll flick you on the god damn tit.

  • @chaplan76 Putting John Mayer up there is like comparing tpain to eric clapton. It just ain't right.

  • @Judg3m3nt That's what your momma said last night when I broke it off in her.

  • @chaplan76 not even logical

  • @Judg3m3nt When you please such a handsome lady, it don't haveta make sence brah!

  • @chaplan76 that one makes a little more sense, but it's based on one that makes no sense.

  • @Judg3m3nt Your killing me smalls...

  • @chaplan76 perfect.

  • This really brought back memories. It was aired on HBO back in the early 90's featuring Les Paul and many many other artists including BB King, Pink Floyd Steve Miller Band, and of course Eddie Van Halen, along with several other artists. I have watched the entire video literally hundreds of times and know each note by heart. I recorded it on VHS and still have the original copy

  • Unbelievable combination of tapping, delay and volume pot = WIN. You can play harder things on guitar, but not better.

  • this solo is called CATHEDRAL. and you can actually play it on GH VH (guitar hero van halen)

  • @GibsonByBirth your just uneducated unemotional noise so shut up

  • Evh the shred god, bow to your sensei or stfu. Sweet keytar solo. No

Johnnyboy200406 we just think your gay.

  • Johnnyboy200406 iz a fagot if u really luv muzik it dosest mater plus he,z a gud key tarst so shut da fuk up u peice of shit

  • anyone else think keytar is gay lmao that does not belong with eddie on stage, even though eddie is great at keyboards the keytar is so gay

  • Johnnyboy you fool, that's Jan Hammer. Ever here his stuff with Jeff Beck or Al DiMeola?

  • @spiderbass65 Not to mention his work with The Mahavishnu Orchestra with guitarist John McLaughlin (The Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire albums will blow your mind) and his work on the music for Miami Vice!!!

  • He was so drunk during this whole thing, its hilarious, but he still played the best, no matter what

  • FRIKKIN COOL, MAN!

  • is he just hammering and pulling the opening? that's awsome!

  • @mmiikkoollaaii its a combo, its hammers and pulloffs at the same time he is using the volume knob to increase the notes sound

  • @Johnnyboy200406 bitch!

  • EDDI RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the kram 5150 love it

  • 天才

  • 0.0 holy crap!!!!!

  • Is it Tony Levin on a Bass? Outstanding!

  • HE ROCKS

  • EVH is my idol :D

  • sounds like cathedral off of fair warning man he is so amazing .

  • i think you mean diver down

  • the frankenstien is (a charvelle)... this one's a kramer copy

  • eddies guitar is a charvelle...lol..you would think he would've used a gibson ...lol

  • That's a Kramer buddy. The only Charvels he used were the VH2 guitar and the striped guitars that he plays on stage and sells them on Ebay that's it. He mainly uses his Wolfgangs and he started playing the Frankenstrat again. Yeah.

  • @sarg8 he didnt put anythng on Ebay, the Yellow and Black was buried with Dimebag, they made a replica of the red white and black, which he uses now, and he used the Wolfgangs

  • RIP PAUL

  • EVH IS THE MAN!

  • Comment removed

  • Well if your referring to the solo, Eddie's playing rhythm and Jan Hammer is the one soloing on keys at that point.

Otherwise I'm not understanding your question.

  • idk where 2:48 came from!!! i meant uh :1:24

  • divebombs on a keytar! Cheez! :)

  • A super jam

  • Dude, this footage is beyond epic. Thanks for posting it! I had never seen it!

And I don't think I've ever seen Tony Levin so animated before. This is just too cool!

  • Rip Les paul, ill Cherish my paul forever and on

  • Rest in Peace Myth Paul

  • Rest In Peace Mister Paul

  • Yes the Bassist is Tony Levin of Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, and John Lennon's last album double fantasy.

Jan Hammer is of Mahavishnu orchestra, Miami Vice TV series and Jeff Beck fame.

Now, who is the drummer? I think I have seen him with Hall and Oates, Carly Simon and Foghat.

I know him as Eddie Zyne, but may have a different "Stage name".

    Can anyone enlighten me?

  • The drummer is Rick Marotta...Jerry's cousin.

  • @vealcutlet Thanx for the info, I was wondering who the drummer was. I should also add that Rick and Jerry Marotta are brothers, not cousins.

    Cheers!

  • I remember when this came out but I never caught it. Damnit! What a freakin' lineup!

    Thanks for sharing man!

  • is it tony levin?

  • Is the bass player from Peter Gabriel's band? He looks familiar...tall and bald. :P Just asking cuz he rocks!

  • I always used to under estimate the "keytar" lol :P but i've been proved wrong

  • how does he do that trick at 0.21 seconds in to the vid. i must know

    thanks!

  • only ed knows

  • its called a divebomb

    search syn gates divebomb lesson

that shows you how to do it

takes a lot of practice though it seems easy!!

  • He does some harmonics on the 5th fret with the whammy bar already down a bit, dives more with the whammy bar, and shakes it when he comes back up with the whammy bar, while letting a little bit of feedback come out of his amp (hard to do this while playing quietly). And he has delay. And he's Van Halen lol.

  • The Keyboard player is Jan Hammer.

Wrote the theme for "Miami Vice".

    Pretty cool jam.

  • I remember marveling over this when I saw it on HBO when I was 16. Thanks for posting it!

I had no idea Tony Levin was involved! So awesome!

  • great vid but that stupid keyboard guy needed to get lost

  • That "stupid keyboard guy" is the legendary Jan Hammer who played with Jeff Beck, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and wrote the theme for Miami Vice.

  • haha

    naa

all he needs is some hair

  • hot for teachers on crack hahaha

  • edward ! have mercy !

  • EDDIE, We're not WORTHY!!!

  • anybody know the name of that first tune he plays?

  • the one that sounds kinda like a violin is called cathedral. it comes right after he does the freaky harmonic noises.

  • most innovative guitarist EVER!

  • 2:21 - 2:25 sounds amazing

  • Eddie Van Halen is absolute brilliant musician,

  • Great music!! But I'm curious as to who the drummer is.... anyone know?

  • I didn't play close attention, but the drummer is usually Eddie's brother Alex Van Halen

  • Thanks for the reply WENGERGOONER... I've looked at this vid a lot, and I'm sure it isn't Al. Al's style is a little more "melodic" to me, and the unfortunately the one or two camera shots they get of him aren't clear enough.

    Cheers, Brian

  • Yeah I think you're probably right there mate :)

  • amazing stuff

eddie's up there with hendrix imo

  • THE BEST

  • great music from absolutely brilliant musicians! Well done!

  • Hell yeah for VH!

and Jan's baldingness makes him better in my eyes personally lol.

  • whoa! Eddie's just too f****n' good in this one!

  • 5-star.

Eddie and Jan are fuckin' geniuses, you 3-chord Nirvana/Pearl Jam-pussies.

  • i think eddie smokes these guys

eddie is clearly of a more advanced league

  • Be careful about who you are talking about. Jan Hammer and Tony Levin are two of the most respected musicians of their respective instruments (keyboard and bass) and can play things eddie wouldn't know where to begin, for example jazz and jazz fusion.

  • I agree....to an extent....Eddie is a very accomplished piano and keyboard player in his own right. He also plays drums and bass. Saying that Jan and Tony can play things that Eddie wouldn't know where to begin is reaching a bit. Tony and Jan are very good though.

  • Oh man trust me, I am a HUGE EVH fan, he's the reason I started playing guitar, and I'll be the first to say he has done huge amounts and pushed boundaries in his playing, in the rock idiom. Outside of this comfort zone I do not know how well he would fair up to guys like Tony Levin and Jan Hammer who know all to well about playing outside comfort zones.

  • Anyone know where to find this jam on MP3...?

  • my how the keytar has aged.

  • the intro thing is beautiful.

  • this intro is called cathedral , and its on one of van halens early album , enjoy pal

  • Awesome! Eddie Van Halen and Tony Levin!

    Rock on!!

  • Tony Levis is clearly the most talented person in this video...

  • i like the beginning part when he plays with his knob... mmmmmm

  • like you like to do ^_^ but seriously i like it too

  • mytwocoins

You have no concept or grasp of musical talent. Eddie turned the guitar world on its head with two handed tapping, there maybe better technical players but they have no feel and you are a bawbag.

  • i would just like to agree with railch, however eddie actually got the idea for two handed tapping when he saw a guy playing the chapman stick, and i'm guessing that since he knows tony levin it was him he saw

  • mytwocoins is a scum bag moron. Obviously has some insecure issue with Eddie Van Halen because his comment is completley worthless. I'm sure Tony Levin would be emmbarassed to have someone like mytwocoins a fan of his.

  • like we are embarassed to see your comments with ours , idiot

  • this stuff KICKS AAAAAAASSSS REAL BAAAAD!!!!

  • For an instrumental tune like that, with those two up front playing the way they do. You gotta have one kick'n rhythm section.

Shit, that dude on Bass was tearing it up!

  • "That dude" on Bass is Tony Levin, aka, The Bass God.

  • Jan Hammer on Keys

  • Cool stuff, but how is this a Les Paul Tribute?

  • how does he do that little tune at the start

  • van halen & levin... awesome!

  • Terrific jam! Always wished Eddie would have done a solo instrumental album...I think he would have done a great CD chock full of hot grooves (IMO his greatest asset is his rhythm playing) not just 60 minutes of shred...plus I think he would have put some experimental stuff on there, too...

  • Holy Shit! That was awsome!

  • Eddie and uncle Tony got the DAMN GROOVE!

  • StSanders is gone. Whoever is responsible is a total fucking complete asshole!

  • would be cool to have him on tour with G3

  • I LOVE KEYTARS!!!

  • Replace Tony Levin? Gerardus, do some homework, really...

  • GREAT VIDEO!!!

  • omg you guys only talking over jan hammer and things that you al forgot the fucking nice solo of eddie

  • but i must say i am not a fan of jan the only 1 thats plays nice piano is eddie:-P

  • ATTENTION!: key-tars do NOT impress chicks

  • Jan Hammer...does in fact jam. Search Al DiMeola or Jeff Beck

  • i don't care if Jack Hammer or whatever does rule. Keytars don't. i'm sure there's people who can play the hell out of a pan flute but it, like keytars, have no place in real rock!

  • Yeah they do. Having a keytar in a rock group is the most rock n' roll thing you could do nowadays. You couldn't be any more punk rock other than by having a keytar. Get a clue, NOIOUSIERESROEIO

  • Jan Hammer...does in fact jam. Search Al DiMeola or Jeff Beck

  • vh has alot of talent

  • After being onstage with all that talent, it must have really sucked going back to Van Halen practice the next week.

  • lol, thats funny but you're right

  • Randomtoxy, The guys in van halen are bloody talented too!

  • I'm pretty sure I've seen that bassist playing on stage with Peter Gabriel before.

  • That's absolutely correct:) He's thé bassist Peter Gabriel tours with(listen to The Secret World live: PG:"Mr. Tony Levin Shaking His Tree.."

  • He is Peter's bassist, since Peter left Genesis in 1977.

And King Crimson, Yes, Paul Simon, Joan Armatrading, John Lennon, Buddy Rich, Tracy Chapman, Liquid Tension Experiment, Tony Levin band, Pink Floyd.....

  • I have a question for anyone who can play the beginning of this video. What exactly is he doing in the beginning under the guitar and with the tuners?

  • my guess is he is flicking the tremolo springs to make some crazy ass noise with the delay

  • dubrite...firstly plucking the tremolo springs which creates a nasty reverberated twang,..then picking the strings above the nut, (between nut and tuners) to get high metallic 'ping' sound. after that depressing the tremolo arm while tapping the string onto the pickup,..the rest is elementary.

  • OK, thanks

  • my pleasure

  • i would love to play like him my friend shane wants a les paul SOOO bad!

  • That keyboardist´s solo that sounds like a guitar kicked ass either.

  • I agree Mike Anthony gets his ass kicked off the stage by Tony Levin, I also agree that Mike Anthony really doesn't get much credit for the VanHalen Sound. His bass solos were effects shows not chops. I would love to see Jan Hammer and EVH hook up. Eddie needs to do a solo guitar album, Like Jeff Beck, and even Neil Schon of Journey. Jeff Becks There and Back is still one of my favorite albums of ALL TIME

  • no matter how far out EVH gets on the guitar he is always musical

  • Eating my favourite food and listening to my favourite music. I fucking had a dream about him , and then about his guitar!!

  • He's doing Cathedral at the beginning of the video. He uses the single volume knob to swell up and down in loudness, along with a delay-phaser (somewhere around -94b) to produce the sound. It's actually quite a simple song to play.

  • And that's why i'm getting the tabs.

  • that wasnt his custom fender--that was his Kramer the company he sued 2 endorse. This was from a looonngggg time ago! Im guessing at leat 15 yrs ago. I dont even know if he can afford one of his 25,00 dollar custom fenders!!

  • i find it most likly that he is pretty well off. he could easily afford one.

  • 1. 15 years was not a long time ago 50,000 B.C. was.

    2. He had over 250 million dollars by 1987. Hell yes he can afford his Frankenstein. His car alone is probably about 200 thousand dollars anyway.

  • haha one of his cars probably costs 200 thousand dollars.

  • he doesnt need to afford his replicas though...he hand made the original!!:)

  • Kinda funny/interesting, the video is titled "Les Paul Tribute" but he's playing his custom fender.

  • The tribute is to Les Paul the guitarist and not to the Les Paul the guitar.

  • EVH was influenced by Les.

  • Who is the drummer?

  • tony iomni

  • What???

Again, I read it on another comment, is the drummer Jerry Marota? The brother of great Rick Marota? (drummer that played on Steely Dan´s records)

  • The solo at the beginning - 25 seconds into this video clip - It's called "Cathedral". It's on the Diver Down album.

  • this is good but the other vid was terrible

  • whats he doing in the begining

  • eddie is a genius , levin is good bass player and hammer look like friend guy tv comedy .
