Stand on the middle of the cord with one foot and adjust the length so that the ends of each handle barely touches your armpit.
In regards to shin splints, I hear they're common especially if you're just starting out. Best way to prevent this is to stretch before the workout. Hope this helps
Yes, the Aero Speed. Honestly there's not much difference between this and the cheap speed rope I was using before. However, the cords last longer because it never comes in contact with the handles.
You are awesome!!!! I have seen more than a few rope videos here and this is definitely in the top 3-5 videos. I've been jumping rope for about 6months now as an alternative to running. Hopefully I'll be on your level some day.....Keep it up bro!!!!!!!

Would it be possible for you to provide me with some tips?
The thing is, I love jump roping as a work out because it works almost every muscle in the body and it's virtually better than any other workout. However, I don't know what kind of rope I should buy. I have a few and I trip constantly when I use all of them. Is the tripping due to my lack of cordination and/or skill or is it the rope I'm using? If you could please give me some suggestions that would be GREAT. You are very good!
Hi i bought dis same rope but still keep tripping n find theres still lag time, i am also skipping on concrete... My length to the ends of the handle is below armpit height... Can u tell me how long urs is? I hav no clue wether its too short or too long still...Thx very much
It's all timing and hands-feet coordination, which doesn't take long to develop. The tricks will come over time. Just be sure you have a decent rope (preferably pvc material) and adjusted accordingly to your height. Yes, I always jump on concrete which to many is a big NO NO, but jump roping is not a high impact workout so it won't do much damage to your joints.
Bodyweight exercises only tone your muscles, w/o any significant gain. Generally, you'd have to add weights for muscle gain. That said, you shouldn't worry about them getting bulky, just toned. Hope this helps.
Just beautiful and fino. Man l have a jump rope somewhere and now that I have watched your vid ,im gonna look for it and start doing my cardio. Thanks for the vid
Regarding The Duvide jump rope, can you cross well with that since the cord is coming out of the side of the handle? I have a Buddy Lee rope and you're right the cord doesn't last long, but the bearings are still working fine, just need some oil ounce in awhile.
Skipping is my main form of cardio, although I try to jog 1-2 times/week to change things up a bit. Skipping will definitely help you to TONE your calves since it's the most targeted muscle, just remember to always stay on the balls of your feet.
However, since it utilizes only your bodyweight you should also consider weight training, i.e. calf raises or simply add ankle weights to your skipping workout. Hope this helps.
Whats a good jump rope to buy and how long does it take to learn how to do this to a half decent standard? Where can I get a decent speed rope from? what type? I'm about 5"10.
Any speed rope with thin, pvc cord (~1/4") will work great., and you can find these at any sporting goods store and then adjust the cord to your height. I use a Buddy Lee Aero Speed.
Once you get the footwork and coordination down, it doesn't take long to learn the tricks.
the buddy lee aero speed is good, but i like the buddy lee rope master, i can do more tricks, i started with the aero speed and now have the rope master, nice vid!
I'm surprise your cord lasted 7-8 months on CEMENT. I started out jumping on kitchen floor type surface, now I'm jumping on a mat, and the cords still thins out in the middle.
Before I was jump roping on exercise mats as well. While the cord did last long, jumping on cement surface seems to do less damage to the cord, from my experience.
Perhaps the ridges and dimples on mats contribute to the thinning of the cord?
Hey. You are amazing with the rope! I just bought the Buddy Lee "junior speed" jump rope - do you know the difference between it and the Aero Speed? As far as I can tell, the only difference is the handle material/size (aluminum with 6" handle vs plastic with 7" handle).
Been jumping rope for about 6 months and love it. I'm getting pretty smooth with it, but not nearly as good as this. I have a question. Around the :29 or :30 mark you do about 4 or 5 in a row of criss-crosses, where, instead of cross-jump-uncross-jump you cross and uncross your arms in the same jump. I was teaching someone how to do it the other day, and gave the proper instruction, but it dawned on me that I have no idea what that trick is called. Do you know a name for it?
If I understand you correctly you're referring to the double under criss-cross, but with an immediate transition into a left side swing at the end without landing. I'm sorry I don't know the name for it either.
I end most of my criss-crosses that way, whether it's normal or double-under style and going into right or left side swing.
dude, so ive been jump roping for about 2 months right now and i was just wondering how long it took for you to do all of these tricks consistently for this long.
i use jump roping for HIIT as well man and the way you do it makes me wonder if im doing all i can do to make my high intensity as high as it can be.
The tricks didn't take very long to learn and in the process you develop the stamina and endurance. Then it's just trying to make it look smooth and flowing.
As long as you're within 70-80% of your max. heart rate and you're able to maintain it for 20-30mins, you're getting a great workout. Or try HIIT. It's not really about the tricks. However, some tricks (i.e. double unders, squat jumps) do make you work harder.
do you think that doing 50 medium paced jump ropes then 150 as fast as you can then repeat is HIIT?
another question, do you think that 100 jump ropes as fast as you can then 10 squats, 10 lunges one leg then ten on the other, then repeat is a good cardio workout?
From my understanding, you can't develop overly large muscles from bodyweight training alone; you must incorporate some form of resistance outside of your own bodyweight. I've always had large calves before I started jump roping, so all this exercise did was tone them, among other things.
Space your jump rope workouts, and within several weeks you shouldn't encounter any more pain.
Your calves are tight cos its a new excersize for you. They will relax in a few days. Its good exersize for your legs and they will develope slowely. Bodybuilding will develope muscles quicker if that is what you require. Jump rope is more for cardio and agility rather than muscle growth.
thanks man im going 2 start doing it and i hope i can get huge/large calfs i hope results come quick
i just came back from the store and the weight vest are like $30 but ankle weight are like $8 so im going 2 choose the ankle weights i can do this!!!!!!
depends on the intensity and frequency of the workout. Say you do 30min/day, 3-4 days/week, then you should see changes in as 3 weeks. If you want bigger, faster results try adding ankle weights (or even better, weighted vest).
Great Job. Yes your calves do get bigger to a certain point, but i have a question, i'm trying to do double unders and no matter how hard i try i cant never get the rope under my self two times with one jump. So is my rope to light or i have to try harder ?
As long as you're not using nylon cord you should be fine because those are too light to get any speed (same with leather ropes). It's best to stick with pvc or wire coated ropes. Also, you'll get more speed with a rope adjusted to your height.
First try doing a single double under. Once you get the timing and rhythm down and know how to coordinate wrist with feet, try stringing together consecutive double unders.
Strangely, I've always had large calves. However, it did help to add some size, but it toned my calves more than anything because it's the most targeted muscle in this exercise since you're always on the balls of your feet.
I haven't tried the Rainmaker, but I've tried something similar, perhaps even identical.
The rope is a bit heavy for my liking, and the bearings will quickly wear out the cord (where the cord meets the bearing). It's a decent jump rope if you just want to get a good workout, but not ideal for tricks and speed (if that matters to you).
My sessions are 30min straight. I've never gone for duration.
The ankles and calves feel the most load as you're always on the balls of the feet. Just remember to jump only as high to get over the rope, so no excessive jumping. Also, try alternating your feet to give each leg some rest.
Personally, jump roping is more strenuous as it's not a steady-state workout like jogging.
great job. really nice. we do almost the same way when we do boxing at gym. but not for trying take out the honor of ur job. but ive seen few times ur clipping in the movie ? :) is it because 3minutes is too hard with out alowing any mistakes? try look at 0.36. anyways, great job mate. keep it up.
You can crank out the same speed and execute the same tricks as with the Aero Speed, but the Valeo has a slightly heavier feel because of its thicker cord.
Both jump ropes work great though, but it's more the jump roper than the jump rope.
You can't directly target fat in a certain area. It's overall body fat % that you want to lose. %80 of it is diet when combined with an aggressive exercise plan. Alone exercise and diet don't have the greatest effect, but together it's highly effective.
After a few weeks of use you'll develop the footwork and hands-feet coordination for it, because that's all there is to it. The tricks will come over time.
Inherently, I've always had large calf muscles. But jump roping certainly helped to tone and strengthen them as the calves are the most targeted since you're always on the balls of your feet when jump roping.
I just started rope jumping with a leather rope. I know I have to be patient in the beginning, but I was wondering if it makes a big difference jumping with a rubber rope instead of a leather rope? I am having a difficult time getting the hang of it. I can only jump for about 10 sec when I trip on the rope. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Hey i am looking for an advice. I tried leather jump rope but its hard to do tricks with it and it broke after a while. tried everlast speed rope the $6 one. and it broke at the handles the same day. tried go fit speed rope it breaks the second day. I think I bought 6 of the go fit last 2 weeks that $60 each. I have been jumping for 3 years and i getting really good at it and i am addicted to it too. I add ankles, wrists weights. But yet i can not buy a new one every other day. Any advice??
What kind of surface are you jumping on? Make sure it's smooth so the cord won't wear out.
I'd recommend either the Valeo Neon Jump Rope or the Buddy Lee Aero Speed. There's a big price difference b/w the two, but you can't go wrong with either of them.
N.B. Cord on any speed rope usually wear off wear it touches the handles. Try putting tape on that area.
Thanks for the reply. you know i did duct taped it at the handles and guess what it broke at the handles after the duct tape melted... all the ropes that i used broke at the handles.. so you think if i get the valeo it wont break fast? I saw it at Joe's for $12..
I've been using jump rope as my main cardio workout for the past 4 yrs. It shouldn't take you that long to get to this level. Once you get the timing and coordination down, the tricks will come over time.
That's some good stuff. Only thing is I can't figure out where you guys are getting these ropes that are soft enough not to tangle yet heavy enough to get some speed with. All the speed ropes I have tangle like crazy if you make them change direction like that except for beaded ones. Anyone know some brand names or something? Links would help.
There's nothing special about the rope. It's just a pvc cord (sometimes referred to as plastic cord), and all speed ropes have them. The ropes I would recommend would be a Valeo Neon jump rop for $5, and the Buddy Lee Aero Speed for $40.
Soak the rope in boiling/hot water for 1-2min to straighten out all the kinks. Also, spinning the rope fast while doing tricks that require changing directions helps to prevent tangles. Hope this helps.
Thanks a ton. I am going to try the boiling water thing as soon as I get home. I had a few of the Valeo speed ropes and they were by far the best out of all that I tried. I assume the one your using in the video is the Buddy Lee Aero Speed? Thanks again. By the way you got some steezy skipping going on. Looks prettier than Mayweather.
You make it look effortless!

How tall are you and what's the cord length? Is it common to get shin splints while jump roping?
nice footwork...

Stand on the middle of the cord with one foot and adjust the length so that the ends of each handle barely touches your armpit.
In regards to shin splints, I hear they're common especially if you're just starting out. Best way to prevent this is to stretch before the workout. Hope this helps

:) is it because 3minutes is too hard with out alowing any mistakes? try look at 0.36. anyways, great job mate. keep it up.

Thanks a lot.
I actually did a lot of trimming because the video was originally ~8 min long, taking out the mistakes and repetitive movements.
Yes, it is hard to go for a long duration without messing up, especially when going that fast and executing the more difficult tricks.

The Valeo Neon is a good jump rope.
You can crank out the same speed and execute the same tricks as with the Aero Speed, but the Valeo has a slightly heavier feel because of its thicker cord.
Both jump ropes work great though, but it's more the jump roper than the jump rope.
Peja16Roller 2 years ago
Thanks.
I know what you mean, you can't get much speed from any nylon rope.
Peja16Roller 2 years ago
i'm still not getting those tricks you do like the transitions from side swing to crosses and crosses to side, and pretty much everything else LOL.
could you make a tutorial showing each trick/transition at a fraction of the speed, it's too fast to understand.
javadjack 2 years ago
Sorry, I won't be making a tutorial video. The tricks aren't complicated.
Just practice a lot and you'll develop the footwork and coordination to do those tricks.

Your good! How long do you jump rope in minutes?

Thanks.
6x3-min sets, 3-4 days/week.

Can i lose my damn fat on my arms and body doing jump roping for a while? like 1-2hrs for a whole month everyday? Or is that unhealthy?
crazyspooks10 3 years ago
You can't directly target fat in a certain area. It's overall body fat % that you want to lose. %80 of it is diet when combined with an aggressive exercise plan. Alone exercise and diet don't have the greatest effect, but together it's highly effective.

I alrdy know u cant take fat from a certain spot, but thanks anyways. I got my HIIT setup for the next month. =]

Nice reply to Mayweathers jump ropoing his is just a little bit better his seems slot cleaner and tighter.
Hey how long did it take you to get the hang of it? I tried it and it's pretty hard and i'm in good shape.
sal70228 3 years ago
Thanks.
After a few weeks of use you'll develop the footwork and hands-feet coordination for it, because that's all there is to it. The tricks will come over time.
Peja16Roller 3 years ago
So did you get those calves just from rope work or do you do any additional weight work for those?
stutwostep 3 years ago
Inherently, I've always had large calf muscles. But jump roping certainly helped to tone and strengthen them as the calves are the most targeted since you're always on the balls of your feet when jump roping.
Peja16Roller 3 years ago
Awesome. Is it a pretty good workout for the rest of the leg too then?
stutwostep 3 years ago
I only use jump roping for conditioning purposes. There are other more efficient exercises to strengthen your lower body.

Thanks.
mardan35 3 years ago
There's a world of difference. Leather ropes have less density than plastic/pvc ropes, so they don't allow for high rotational torque.
PVC cords will allow for fast spins and tricks (if that matters to you). Also make sure the rope is adjusted according to your height.

So fluid and smooth!!!
You made that rope sing.

Any advice??
mu0325 3 years ago
What kind of surface are you jumping on? Make sure it's smooth so the cord won't wear out.
I'd recommend either the Valeo Neon Jump Rope or the Buddy Lee Aero Speed. There's a big price difference b/w the two, but you can't go wrong with either of them.
N.B. Cord on any speed rope usually wear off wear it touches the handles. Try putting tape on that area.
Peja16Roller 3 years ago
Thanks for the reply. you know i did duct taped it at the handles and guess what it broke at the handles after the duct tape melted... all the ropes that i used broke at the handles.. so you think if i get the valeo it wont break fast? I saw it at Joe's for $12..
mu0325 3 years ago
Just get any of those Swivel bearing ropes, then you won't have to worry about the rope breaking near the handle.

Put Floyd to shame. You need to do a remix to "Show me the money", too.

dude, how long it take u b4 u could skip like that?
nixie152 3 years ago
I've been using jump rope as my main cardio workout for the past 4 yrs. It shouldn't take you that long to get to this level. Once you get the timing and coordination down, the tricks will come over time.

That's some good stuff. Only thing is I can't figure out where you guys are getting these ropes that are soft enough not to tangle yet heavy enough to get some speed with. All the speed ropes I have tangle like crazy if you make them change direction like that except for beaded ones. Anyone know some brand names or something? Links would help.
xenonace1 3 years ago
There's nothing special about the rope. It's just a pvc cord (sometimes referred to as plastic cord), and all speed ropes have them. The ropes I would recommend would be a Valeo Neon jump rop for $5, and the Buddy Lee Aero Speed for $40.
Soak the rope in boiling/hot water for 1-2min to straighten out all the kinks. Also, spinning the rope fast while doing tricks that require changing directions helps to prevent tangles. Hope this helps.
Peja16Roller 3 years ago
Thanks a ton. I am going to try the boiling water thing as soon as I get home. I had a few of the Valeo speed ropes and they were by far the best out of all that I tried. I assume the one your using in the video is the Buddy Lee Aero Speed? Thanks again. By the way you got some steezy skipping going on. Looks prettier than Mayweather.
xenonace1 3 years ago
@Peja16Roller Thanks for this tip.
Im very tall and have been buying ropes but they are all kinked up and I cant do my crossovers and stuff easily like I use to.
I ALMOST just purchased the buddy lee rope just now but will soak my ropes in boiling water.
Thanks Peja!
