I understand the need to control the wolf population and ensure the health of the herds. However, I do think that a system would need to be put in place to ensure that people don't hunt them indiscriminately and drive them nearly to extinction because they are a vital part of the ecosystem. As are other predators like bears and mountain lions. Keeping predators around ensures the health of the herds just as much as making sure that the predators don't outnumber the prey.

@BruceH59 As I said before, wolf populations do need to be controlled. Especially since overpopulation is as dangerous to the wolves as it is to their prey (starvation, disease, etc). I was simply trying to say that measures would need to be put in place to prevent wolves from being hunted to near extinction as well since they are important, just like cougars and bears. As far as I know, wolves in Canada are unprotected outside of national parks, but I'm not sure so I could likely be wrong.

There was less support from Idaho conservationists for an Idaho reintroduction than for Yellowstone because there was good evidence that wild wolves were already migrating into Idaho. I understand the need to control the wolf population and ensure the health of the herds. However, I do think that a system would need to be put in place to ensure that people don't hunt them indiscriminately and drive them nearly to extinction because they are a vital part of the ecosystem. As are other predators like bears and mountain lions. Keeping predators around ensures the health of the herds just as much as making sure that the predators don't outnumber the prey.

@BruceH59 As I said before, wolf populations do need to be controlled. Especially since overpopulation is as dangerous to the wolves as it is to their prey (starvation, disease, etc). I was simply trying to say that measures would need to be put in place to prevent wolves from being hunted to near extinction as well since they are important, just like cougars and bears. As far as I know, wolves in Canada are unprotected outside of national parks, but I'm not sure so I could likely be wrong.

I have already shot one bear in self defense this year (with a bow) and I certainly would not hesitate to shoot a wolf if I came across one. I had no idea they could get up to 200lbs.

Sometimes the poor farmer finds them still alive and must finish them off. There are not that many wolves here but it dont take many to do alot of damage !
