I actually use this throw! And you are all right about "catching the punch"! You really have to be pretty lucky to start this by catching. Maybe if you are that close and your arm is touching then... What we do is to grab the arm into that position by pulling the wrist. This is something that someone that is a grappler would do not some one who thinks they are a kickboxer.
But when you do it people fall hard because they are not used to falling straight down.
If a punch is too fast to grab; the punch can be deflected using the same movements. The only alternatives are to "roll with the punch" such as in Western Boxing, or to get hit hard.
I'm going to go out on a limb and share this knowledge with everyone here, because I know it will be ignored: seeking to grab punches is like hoping to catch sunlight. For whatever good it does you, it's worthless in all reality.
@nomamao Catching the arm / wrist / punch whatever is just a demonstration "situation" that ideally is that getting a hold of the limb is important. Reason why all martial arts or even the military demonstrates situation "what if this happens" and so you know what to do and not get star-struck. Just cause you learn how to throw a punch or kick, dont mean you learn how to use it in the time you really do get in a fight. So entirely its not that useless. You get what im saying?
Why is it always taken for granted that one will be able to catch punches when this type of technique is displayed? It's unrealistic, to say the least.
@nomamao Thats true, which is why so many fighting styles look good in demonstration, but when it comes to real life and some one throws a job they are confused.
I thinkt that this is an excellent representation of the technique. If you think about it, catching the punch isnt really necessary to make this technique work. As long as you can get to the outside and deflect the blow, you can make the throw work. I think that catching the punch is ideal, because you keep control all of the time. But this technique is fault tolerant because their are other principals to back it up which keep you safe.
@ronin752 as long as you get to the outside you can do a lot of things, and if I don't already have the arm, bending the guy over for the pull back isn't going to happen and the you won't be doing this throw. Therefor, unless one is a wizard and can catch punches reliably, I'd stop showing this technique like that. I highly doubt it's about punch catching anyway. .
I agree. Getting to the outside is most important, which he did here. Secondly, you may not catch a punch, but there are ways to adhere to the technique and capture the arm. For me, a counterstrike is important to properly set up the throw. No doubt, things are left out of this technique. I cant really say that this person does not know that though. So he showed one thing. I look at it for the positives in the technique and that is pretty much it. I wont judge him though.
@ronin752 yeah, I've been shown this technique before and it has good things to it, but never would I ever say "right after you catch the punch, you do this" if I was to show it to someone else. Fantasy Fight theory of catching punches always scares me; I just hate to see the BS fantasy associated with such realistic martial arts. Maybe "combat Schuai Chiao" leaves out the catching of punches? lol. But, yeah, I'm not judging the instructor, just the technique.
@nomamao What he's showing is the "textbook" way of practicing the technique. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of ways to apply this technique in a self defense situation. What you're seeing is only the demo/"textbook" way of showing it.
@nomamao The catching of punches is really a street combat technique. It is possible to catch street punches because they are often thrown differently than those by a trained fighter, or semi-trained fighter in the ring, or in a stand up duel-type fight. Think of the difference between your typical haymaker and a jab. You can catch the haymaker. The jab is harder.
I will tell you, this throw is an excellent technique.
@haffoc I'm sorry, but I will never train to fight an untrained person, especially with the idea that their punches are somehow easier to catch. Your line of reasoning shows that whoever taught you that hasn't been in many street fights at all.
@haffoc I've also been in plenty of street fights and know that catching haymakers is not a common enough occurance to count on it happening. I guess they fight a lot better in my neck of the woods, huh?
@haffoc lol. Yes, I've been in plenty of street fights in my day. when you come up where I have, it's just a given that you'll have come up scrapping. But, I can count on my hand the number of times I've even seen someone bring out the haymaker. All anecdotal evidence aside, catching punches isn't for smart people. If your instructor doesn't agree, well I guess you don't fall far from the tree and I wish you both a lot of luck never making it to somewhere where people really throw down.
@nomamao LOL I agree catching punches shouldn't be done unless you really know you can win and chances to that cockiness wouldn't serve well on streets. I mean there isn't many who would just stand and watch there peers get massacred.
@nomamao Well he just says catch the punch, I see it is much easier to catch or grab a hold of a persons wrist and do this very technique then to "catch" the punch. xD cause I don't know about you I'm not fast enough to stand and catch the punch while risking of a possibility of it hitting home to my face : ].
