When I was 10 I brought a fixed blade to school because we were going to the woods that day from school. The teacher had given me permission earlier to bring it, and after we got back, she took the knife from me, never said anything about it and when I remembered my dear knife two years later and asked the teacher about it, it took her months to remember to bring it back for me. The knife had more wear on the coating than it did when she took it, damn bitch used the knife as her own.

Holy fuck. What is going through these people's heads? When I was 9 I brought a pocket knife to school for show and tell. All that happened to me was the teacher took it away from me for the day and told me not to bring it to school again. Schools these days are completely out of control. I can't believe that anyone seriously thinks that this is an appropriate punishment for a 6 year old.

This case involves a six year old with no intent to harm a sole. You take the Swiss Army knife away from him, explain to him why it is wrong to bring the knife to school that he planned to eat with, and suspend him for a day or two. As hard as it may seem, the rules are for everyone including this "angel" looking kid. I really don't know if 45 days of suspension is appropriate. However, we don't know all the details of the story. The "news" only tell us what they want us to know. May be he has taken knifes to school before and threatened other children. The school can not reveal that. It is private information. So, for now, I will stay cool.

45 days is far too long. At that age, the amount of information they cover is immense. A talk to the parents and maybe a day or two at the most would be needed.

If it were a 15+ year old who brought in a knife, it'd be a different story, but a 6 year old?

45 days is out of line, a punishment deserved yes this no. I could kill people with a pencil but a little kid, I doubt there intent was such. you could take say 5 days and have a briefing with parent/child with the school. I have a child older then this, and he does try to sneak things to school. that's why I check his book bag. and I remind him that only thing you need is yourself, homework books etc.
