Thor figures out Loki is behind the Hulk's apparent rampage and goes to Asgard to fight him while Iron Man, Giant-Man, and the Wasp fight the Hulk. Captain America shows up in #4. After leaving the team he asks his new friend, the Black Panther, to join the team while he's gone. T'Challa first appears in Avengers#52.

Shield didn't exist when the Avengers began. Loki tried to trick Thor into fighting the Hulk and the other heroes just showed up by accident. After Loki was beaten Ant-Man suggested they stay together. Shield was retconned into the origin. Nick Fury didn't know anything about Shield until about three years after the Avengers was formed.

That's their origin, but their history definitely deserves a mojo treatment because it's much more complex.

@BreakWatcher Thor hasn't always beaten Loki in one story Loki even stold Thor's identity and power and turned Balder and Sif against him who they thought was Loki. Eventual Thor did defeat him though and got his form back, in another Story Loki took over Asgard and Thor needed help of The Silver Surfer to beat him. He did astral projection, illusions, animated inanimate objects, teleported, hypnosized and used potions to give power to absorbingman & Wrecker.

@hydrolito yeah nice but it still doesn't answer why thor needed iron man, hulk and captain america. I tried to read it in wikipedia but the answer is not clear too. i somehow see it being linked to the Cosmic Cube since the cube gives unlimited power. a human, red skull, manage to use it and produce impressive results so a 'god' can use it (probably) better.

His powers came from an (intentional-conspiracy) accidental toxic spill which latter became a metaphor for the use of illegal street drugs.

His powers to generate, shape, and manipulate tremendous static charges allowed him to pursue a fantasy of being a hero.

As I understand my comicbook lore although Simon & Kirby were the best of what they do they did but liberally swiped characters from other already on the stand comic book companies. Their first issue of Captain Marvel impersonation of Superman bogged up the court rooms for over a decade. Captain Marvel with declining sales threw in the towel and NP bought the rights to the character. Captain America was too simliar to "The Shield' (much later Archie Comics) and had to change the shield.
