Empty Sky, Elton's first album was not released here in America until 1975, some 6 years later. With no internet back in the day it was rare to hear any of the recordings off of this album. With that said, Skyline Pigeon off of Empty Sky is probably one of Elton's best. This is the song I have already told my children must be played at my funeral when I am released from that aching metal ring we call life.
OMG, this song brings back some great memories, thank you for posting it......One of the most underated and one of Elton's greatest hidden gems......Especially the use of the harpsicord what a beautiful instrument.
This is a really fantastic song by Elton John :) It gives me goosebumps. The Harpsicord and Organ gives it a real medievel feel to it. One of my faves

This is absolutely the most beautiful song I had ever heard when I was a young girl. I am much older and still prefer the harpsichord version very much... it brings tears to my eyes!
I remember when this album was re-released in 1975 (I think). It revealed Elton's youthful voice but also his talent as a songwriter. And yes, I do agree with wagtunes. A lot of times the remakes never stand up to the original release.
@wagtunes Agreed. The 1972 single version is pleasant enough, but ordinary. The original album track with just harpsichord, organ and Elton's vocals has a soaring, spiritual quality; it sounds like something you could play in church.
That is OK dearest Emily. For me it's the greatest song ever written. I like this version a lot but I'll admit his later versions are far superior. It has sentimental value for me I suppose but then so do a lot of his songs. I don't mind so much if no one understands what these words mean to me. There are very few songs that break my heart and this is one of them.
Elton use to be the tea boy at Dick James offices in the sixties making cuppas for the stable writers such as Roger Cook, Roger Greenaway and Tony Hiller. Elton use to keep bringing in song ideas to Roger Cook and one occasion Elton hit the jackpot! Roger Cook loved Skyline Pigeon and published the song under COOKAWAY music.

Brilliant combination of arrangement (Gus Durgenson) and poetry (Bernie Taupin) While I consider John to be one of the most reprehensible persons on the planet, one can not help but realize when married with the genius of Bernie Taupin, he was, at one time, a rather talented individual. Then, as happens too often, gave up talent for fame.
He is a talented, enduring artist who has also raised many millions of dollars for important charities. In what way is he 'one of the most reprehensible persons on the planet'?
When approached by me to simply contribute a receipe for WON FROM THE HEART: The International AIDS Memorial Cookbook, knowing his name would help others, he wrote me back saying, "I don't support projects like yours."
Well, the last laugh was on him: at the book launch, on display with the original receipes from the survivors of Queen, Elizabeth Taylor, Stephen King, et al, his letter was right on top.
Why do you think that Elton John gave his talent up for fame? Do you think his successful albums are all too commercial?
And if you "consider John to be one of the most reprehensible persons on the planet", what is about all the murderers, rapists, or just dumb people, etc. ? What give you the right to say something like that? Because he didn't support your project? Because your angry about his decision? Because he hurted your vanity? Or what?
His first power ballad, prior to success in the major charts... Working the craft that Bernie on lyrics and Elton on the hops and keys putting that 'British Trademark" on this great song...
My God that was beautiful :')

Early kareoke song; turn down the balance all to the right and the vocal disappears...

This tune on piano is great, but on harpsicord, nothing compares.

Elton has said in interviews that
many of his songs, especially
early ones, like this one, he
wrote like church hymns.
Another great early Elton tune!

This version is so much better than the remake (way too commercial) that is isn't even funny. He should have never redone this song.
