  • This is one of the best things I have ever seen, so much commitment and time must have been spent on this, have the BBC hired you yet? If not, what are they waiting for!?

  • Simply incredible....

  • These are amazing. You can scarcely tell they were ever black and white

Frame by frame in Adobe Photoshop...phenomenal.

  • wait a minute i thought the celestial toy maker was destroyed and was just pictures and audio ?

  • Very, very good.

  • Dude! This is beyond awesome. The Chase and The Invasion especially.

  • WOW!!!!! JUST WOW! The BBC should hire you to do this professionally!

  • Amazing, I would love to see these old B/W stories coloured, they would reach a whole new audience :)

  • My word the BBC really should hire you do colour the old black and whites, such talent could achieve so much more! I'm subscribing, you're truly fantastic!

  • how did you colourize everything so fluently, vivid colours, everything. I use photoshop but it doesnt seem to do the trick

  • Deserving of a medal ! Shame the BBC couldnt be bothered, with all their resources

  • If you don't mind me asking, how do you colourise the clips, i mean like how do you take the frames and what do you use to colourise them once you have the frames? :) Amazing work, i wish Doctor Who was broadcast in colour in the 60's... Oh well.

  • so is this wat it would have looked like in colour

  • I love these so much... but why did you remove your other colourizations? I really loved the one with The Dalek's Master Plan that had The Song of Freedom playing in the background.

  • you should try doing some from Timeslip(1970).

  • how did you know the colours

  • I'm speechless......

  • Dude I dunno what you do for aliving but consider trying to work at thw bbc dvd dept and help color the episodes

  • Very good, you must have put a lot of work into this!!! What is the name of the music?

  • "Fantastic" :)

  • I hate people who go...blah blah blah....should be shown as it was originally made...blah blah blah...directors original intentions..blah blah..COLOURISED looks bloody great!! Colour 'em all, i say!

  • the invasion footageat 4:00 to 4:35 is so amazing as well as the mind robber clip.

it looks like they were actully made in colour.

  • I can't see that footage from the end of Unearthly Child ep 1 without expecting Paul Whitehouse to self-consciously wander into shot wearing a policeman's uniform. Damn you Harry Enfield and your occasionally surreal comedy show.

  • Thank you for the excellent pc of hard work. Seeing the 1st doctor in colour, warm and authentic of its time is such a joy and probably very rewarding for the corresponding efforts put in. Much appreciate it...

  • Fantastic!

  • I would love to see a dvd release of both William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton in colour.

  • ONE dislike??? Whoever that was should be banned from YouTube!

LOL. I kid, of course. We're all entitled to our own opinions.

... And my opinion is we tar-and-feather the wanker. ;-)

  • Shit this is impressive

  • You should do the Mind of Evil episode 1

  • 4:50 i did a screenshot from that story but with blue with his suit and helmet.but your version looks great.

  • Hi BabelColour, I love your colourisations. They look so authentic. Many years ago in an interview with your good self in Nothing At The End Of The Lane you mentioned you wanted to tackle colourising the entire An Unearthly Child episode. Do you still plan to do this? I really hope you do. Be a great way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary.

  • @DustyMaximus - Good heavens, did you actually read that interview? Haha. Long time ago. If only I had the time to do 'An Unearthly Child', it would be a fantastic project for the annivesary!

  • @BabelColour time? if you had the time you would do it?? Someone...get this man a TARDIS...pronto !!!

  • @DustyMaximus Hi a youtube user is colourising Uneathly child

  • beautiful work!

  • WOWZERS! The first doctor i love to watch. Can you make a full episode of the Daleks in colour PLEASE? Or would it be to much? Or send the episode to me

  • Superb work! Obviously a labour of love. Much as I like the harsh, sinister look of the original b&w footage, your colourisation work adds a whole new dimension to the clips. Many thanks for sharing.

  • You, my good sir, are a god to be able to do all of this frame-by-frame.

Also, it looks actually very nice, at times it looks even better than the other episodes from the classic series

  • This is brilliant! It's amazing, and I can't believe it's moving footage. That must've taken you ages. Though I am the last to complain, what is that music you've overlaid?

Either way, this should be brought before the Restoration Team and put into action pronto. Colourization and reconstruction!

  • Huh. I never knew the Brigadeer was in black and white at some piont. That's pretty cool.

  • How about a colorised Quatermass clip.

  • This is amazing !

  • This is truly wonderful but are you getting any renumeration for it?

  • I have to agree with 'Rumpio' - the last few scenes of The War Games would be epic in colour!

  • @thatenglishkid I colourised a scene from the war games

  • Wow! amazing job! =D

  • SHERLOCK & DOCTOR WHO writer Mark Gatis (The Unquiet Dead, Lazarus Experiment, Idiot's Lantern, Victory of the Daleks) just promoted this on Twitter, calling it: "This is fabulous! See 'The Invasion' looking like a full blown Pertwee!"

{"NOTHING IN THE WORLD CAN STOP BABELCOLOUR NOW!!"} ;p

  • I don't like colourisation as a rule but this is very well done.

  • I think we need to push for the BBC to release a colour An Unearthly Child for the 50th anniversary...

Either that, or you've got a big job ahead of you :)

  • Ah if only you'd do the last scene of The War Games! :)

  • Utterly brilliant.

  • I'll ppay you to have these episodes in full color!

  • What's the music? My brain's telling me Nine Inch Nails, but I wasn't sure...

  • This is absolutely AMAZING. This must have taken forever! The BBC should pay for these, imagine if all the episodes were colourised and put on DVD with the original versions. You need to talk to them.

  • amazing job, u should professionally do this

  • So... when are the BBC going to come and pay you to do all the Black & White episodes? :P

  • could we use some?

  • This is the first time I've seen most of those clips with sound as well as colour!! So thanks from the bottom of my heart(s)! "-BOOM- OHOHO!! -BOOM- OhoHO! -BOOM- OhoHOhoHOhoHOoOOOoo!!!!" LOL!!!

  • ... Clap clap clap i have photoshop but how do you get each frame

  • As others have said, absolutely stunning!

It's a real shame that the process is so time consuming, I'd love to watch the Hartnell episodes in color!

If the missing Doctor Who episodes ever turn up, and you colorize them, I'll die happy :)

  • Absolutely amazing. And there's something very touching about it to - I almost welled up. Your skill and patience are to be praised. Thank you.

  • ive always wondered why you have never done a full episode. i know it takes a long time tho so was wondering how long everything has taken you in total?

  • Love this

  • this is good.by the way,are you related to matt Humphries ? he might be appearing in doctor who.

  • @toyadventures12 oops,no,your not.

  • Hi Stuart - Are you not featuring your individual colourised work any more..? It was so good. I am interested again in trying some colourising myself and am looking for some guidance on the best software I can use for the job.. I have Adobe Photoshop 6 but it doesn't seem that good for colourising. Any suggestions what I could use to achieve the sort of levels you have..?

    Thanks.

  • You are such a talent. You really are. If I won the lottery tomorrow I'd pay you to sit down and spend a decade doing a whole episode! Top work and thanks for making my day.

  • An absolutely delight to watch. I can't even begin to imagine the time and effort you have put into this. I very seldom comment on videos but I felt your work here deserved an acknowledgement of appreciation. Bravo.

  • @floggums - Thank you. 'Tis much appreciated!

  • The thing that I find strange is that the old doctor whos lacked more in acting quality and scripting than visual effects. You might think that they would have good acting and stuff then, even if the special effects were bad, but really, its the other way around for some reason.

  • Hey, i use adobe photoshop elements 7.0 and i was wondering if u could drop me an email explaining how you do this - tjacoolvids@hotmail.co.uk

  • Fap fap fap fap, this video is orgasmic!

  • This is a fantastic Job. My hats off to you sir. What really pulls off the colorization is that you kept the color pallet to period by only using the colors available on 1960's Technocolor .Again Brilliant!

  • I once had a dream that a colour copy of an episode of Celestial Toymaker was found....

  • @randomdave30 i had the same dream but with all episodes of the war games in 1969.

  • i love the video but i am dying to know when `The Ten Doctors: Part 4` will be completed, or how close it is to finishing

  • What is the background music called? Where can i get it?

  • Nice work fam

  • BabelColour - simply Wow. Your work is fantastic, and as always of the utmost quality.

  • Hehe the doctor was the first to say "I'll be back" 0:40

  • Wow, black and white looked so natural with the first doctors, it looks so cool with color, now.

  • This is great!

  • These are the best quality colour clips I've seen the colour kind of reminds me of the 1960's star trek.

  • great work a pleasure to watch

  • will you be uploading more?i've seen your colourized telesnaps of ep 4 of the tenth planet and they looked like they were shot in colour in 1969(some programs on bbc 1 switched to colour early in the year like dads army)

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • this is amazing it is like they were already colour watching the first and second doctor in colour is weird cause in black and white everthing looks normal like the tardis console looks white but is green brilliant

  • Amazing what you can do withphotoshop, i would buy a beer or something if i have the change,

  • Really cool!

  • @BabelColour, Your work is amazing, in the truest sense of the word. It's absolutely marvelous.

  • Give that man a job!

  • BBC people: hire this man NOW - but don't make him delete all his videos, like Otaking

    Awesome work, Babelcolour!! <3

  • @Nadius89 Lol, if they ban Babelcolour we're gonna start a f*ing petition!

  • Just amazing!!!!!

  • Awesome!! :D :D

  • One thing I've always been amused by since discovering your vids: I gather (correct me if I'm wrong) that you're old enough to have seen Hartnell and Troughton eps on transmission while I wasn't born until Tom's tenure, but I love the look of the b&w stuff while you seek to colorize it. BUT... even I have to salute the work here. It's very impressive, as usual.

  • @drufan9 - No. I'm not that old :)

  • @drufan9 Don't have to be old to have seen--even own the first doctors. I'm 14 and love the oldies!

  • Absolutely unbelievable. Must be quite a work of love.

  • I can't help but echo sentiments like amazing and fantastic. Because they are!

  • fantastic!

  • Generally I hate colorization. I find it looks feeble, like a poorly colored coloring book, with swaths of B&W left in the background, or in someones hair. This is quite good.

  • Well done Babelcolour as always, I especially liked those colourised shots in 'An Unearthly Child', it seems very magic.

  • This is incredible! What is the music used for this?

  • this is so fasinating

  • beautiful work!

  • this was awesome very well done God bless you

  • This is beautiful work!

  • Awesome. Just awesome.

  • It's very good. I wonder if you have a version without the modern music?

  • Beautiful presentation. Very nice!

  • amazing work!!!!

  • Holy cow!!! 8000 hand-colored frames!!! You, sir, are amazing. A heart-felt salute to you for colorizing (or colourising) the early era of one of the greatest TV shows ever!!

  • It's funny that you posted that, and I'm near posting my own Colouration Video...

  • You should send this to the BBC as well as those behind the DVD releases. I'm sure they would be very impressed. The Invasion clip looks like it was filmed in colour.

  • @Bedhead923 that would be a good idea.

  • wait where can i watch all these episodes of william and every doctor in black and white.

  • @AmmoMaxia with color

  • Magnifique, du bon boulot.

    Well done **

  • this is amazing.i am inpressed

  • @masterstarfox - Thank you :)

  • @BabelColour i did some too.i'm doing some from timeslip(1970).

  • If a missing episode ever turns up, you should be the first person to get to watch it. To a Doctor Who fan, there can be no greater praise

  • This is really good mate

  • Should totally sell this stuff to the BBC.

  • @DistantJ - They already own the copyright to Doctor Who, do you imagine they'd countenance paying some upstart to buy it back?

  • As a VFX & animation consultant who has worked for Industrial Light & Magic, Disney, and other studios, I am thoroughly impressed by your work. I can't believe you did all that colorizing in PhotoShop. You're a maniac!! ;-)

Have you tried using Adobe After Effects? It's like PhotoShop on wheels: compositing and image manipulation software for moving footage. You can download a free 30-day trial from Adobe's site. You might also try PhotoGimp, a powerful free program.

    Again, bravo!

  • @TeachingSpot - Thank you, I'm very glad to hear you liked it. I did use AfterFX (as the name suggests) after the event to remove noise and grade the colour, but I'm mystified - to be honest - how I would use the program to actually achieve my colourisation.

  • This is the definition of "labor of love." I am truly impressed.

  • @Noordledoordle - Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.

  • This is amazing. I can't even fathom all the work that must have gone into this. I can only say well done, and thank you!

  • @chocolateislove - My pleasure. I shudder myself when I think about the work that went into it, but at least the end results are enjoyed by fellow fans :)

  • Thank you for every single second of your work--it's brilliant. If I hadn't known these had been in black and white I would've thought they were originally shot in color.

    It's truly awe-inspiring.

  • @meowbooks - That's very kind kind of you. Thank you!

  • Can I just say that this is completely amazing!

  • @squishy300 - I very happy that you think so.

  • Nobel Prize ? AHAH. We should invent a Doctor Prize, and give it to you !

People of the Earth should be worshipping you.

  • @AnnHauzerman - Feel free to be the first! :)

  • If Steven Moffat doesn't call you to help with any kind of 50th anniversary show they are planning (for 2013) than he is making a big mistake. Seriouslt, you're work is that good. You also seem to have a connection with the "older" Doctors that would be greatly beneficial.

  • I once tried to colour a black and white still of Susan, but I could never get it to look right, the contrast was never realistic. So I have a teeny inkling of what you must have been through with this! A real labour of love! Well done. If the BBC don't employ you after seeing this, then it's their loss.

  • @spacefan1962 - Part of the trick is to get the contrast right. The original footage was obviously shot and lit to be monochrome, so a bit of prudential tweaking of the levels is essential!

  • The doctor who restoration team, must employ you to colourise the classic early stories! It is a crime not to! Talented is too small a word for your work! Truly inspirational! Nothing quite touches it! The tones and colours are beautiful. The atmosphere increased!

  • @doctorwhodegenerate - You're extremely kind. I'm chuffed you enjoyed the look of it.

  • This is insanely devoted. Amazing work. THANK you.

  • @Libertine910 - Thank you. Aren't all Doctor Who fans insanely devoted?

  • you are fantastic !

  • @DrewMr92 - Yes, I think, quite possibly, I might be :)

  • You are utter magic.

  • You do it frame by frame? God, that must take ages!

  • @UDWF1 From his statements I've calculated that this video to 1,352 hours and 30 minutes to make. Thus must have been an extremely extended project.

  • So freaking cool !!!!

  • That is really cool though I more of a line want a colored Daleks(no the episode)

  • I've been meaning to mentioning this for a while now.

    Stuart Humphryes is awesome!

  • @Maximal32nd - Awww. Thanks :)

  • Amazing!!

  • Good greif, the amount of hard work you have put into this is amazing! Thank you so much for this. Ah, memories of a much younger me, sitting cross legged on the living room floor, gawping at the rented TV, clutching a cushion for comfort every Saturday evening without fail. : )

  • Great work as always man!

  • @1974cpdmm - so I'll say thank you to this one isnstead :)

  • Comment removed

  • @1974cpdmm - I would say thank you, but you've removed it!

  • Very good colourisation of classic Doctor Who stories from the 60's 5/5

  • Whats the music?

  • as always your work is out standing and a testment to your love and care for this greatest of all British institution. :)

  • @LexiPopuli - What a lovely thing to say. Thank you

  • DUDE! BBC needs to hire you to do colorized full episodes of Doctor Who! I bet they can sell a lot of DVDs off that and you can make a whole lot of money!

  • stunning

  • @20yearwritersblock - Thank you.

  • The Mind of Evil can be done using chroma dots. Except episode one. We need to get people like you to colourise that one :)

  • And I keep being inspired to do some of my own... then realise it'll take ages. :P

  • @Aquatics64 - Ages and ages and ages and ages and ages!

  • Lovely!

The best are the Daleks and that incredibly creepy shot of Mavic Chen. But I was blown away by the bits from The Invasion as that's almost how you remember it, it's that perfect! Probably from seeing too many colour photos, like with The Celestial Toymaker - but it just looks right!

  • This is phenomenal! :D

  • @Ethan581 - I'm delighted you liked it.

  • You are a genius. :o)
