  • You'll have to do the video again but without the underwear this time. : O )

And damn... you guys have some pretty tiny sinks over there!

  • Very educational!! Excellent for nursing education as well!

  • God bless you so much, my brother just had a colostomy, and I think this is going to help him a lot, the problem here in Lima, Peru is that this product, I mean this irrigation kit is not common; I mean I have been looking for this kit online in Peru, but I just can0t find it

Could anybody give some suggestions please, I would really appreciate it

    My e-mail is: josecasaretto@gmail.com

  • Thank you for this vid, i have learned a lot and after my third attempt at irrigation today i can;t wait for another crack at it tomorrow, good on you!

cancer Jan 2 ops later colostomy formed Feb 2011

  • As a brand new colostomy user this video was invaluable mate! This definitely looks like the way to go! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this vid, I now have a pretty clear conceptualization of how to irrigate. Cheers!!

  • Brian...Very informative. I am a Nurse but never saw an irrigation performed. Great job! Thanks

  • Thank you very much for posting this video. I am a nursing student who had difficulty grasping the concept of colostomy irrigation via written text alone. You were very informative and I cannot wait to share what I learned visually from an expert with the class tomorrow. You are a good man for doing what you do with such good humor.

  • i'm getting ready for the surgrey and this helps me understand some of the things i need to learn , and knowing i'm not alone in this makes me feel better about the whole thing . i was told i had colon cancer on 9/12/2011 and though not sure what stage i'm in due to my crohns disease has colon all messed up for them to tell , its not in liver or lungs so so far so good thankyou for this info

  • Thank you so much sir for sharing with the world. It would help my mom very much. May you have a wonderful and blessed life ahead of you. Blessings.

  • Thank you. Wonderful video and I will pass this information along to a person very close to me.

  • Very educational.

  • Brian thanks very much for your posting. I will follow your instructions. How severe was the cramping for you when you first started?

    God bless.

  • Hi there.. cramping was not really a problem at all. All one needs to do is to reduce the flow of water a little with the control valve to eliminate any cramping. Make sure water is at about body temperature. Recommended amount of water to use 600 mls to 1000 mls s

  • You are an angel to post this. I am a new nurse and this is extremely useful information. Your positive attitude and pleasant presentation give the perfect perspective to subject. Thank you.

  • Thank you for sharing!

  • Thank you for making this video. I am in a nursing program and have a gastrointestional test tomorrow, your video is really helpful! Sometimes it's better to actually view the procedure than read about it in a book.

  • excellent...am having a colostomy tomorrow....i will definately go for irrigation, this option has really put my mind to rest so thank you so much for being so brave as to show it on line

  • I am having surgery for rectal cancer next week and figured life would suck until I saw your video. I will ask my doctor about the irrigation method. Thank you, very brave.

  • Thanks for the video. It was so educational.

  • Once you train your colon for a certain time, how long can it last before it gets untrained if you stop irrigating? ....not sure if I believe in training the bowel, you don’t need to if you irrigate, I just irrigate whenever it suits any time of the day. You can miss days or weeks, to no affect.

How long to train your colon? ....don’t think I ever did, not sure if one needs to but some people might like to irrigate at the same time each day. Once the bowel is empty its empty for 24 to 48 hours.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this video. I am about to embark on getting my certification as a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse (WOCN) and I have found your video very educating. It is so nice to see one in action as they demonstrate as they teach. Much more valuable education for persons like myself that are visual learners. Thank you again and best of luck!!

  • My opinion

    I’ve been irrigating 16 years

What is the biggest negative to irrigating?...none, although I find I don’t do it as often if my mood down, advantages are huge.

How long between irrigation and will I know?... I think it depends on how much I eat, 1 to 2 days ...I just wait until poop comes out, if I am going out I try to always irrigate.

Any long term negative effects for the colon when irrigating?...nothing that I know of, I often irrigate every day if I am going to work etc.

  • Thank u for the video...I'm a nursing student and this video help greatly....I'M A VISUAL LEARNER

  • My mum recently got a colostomy bag, she has been stressed about losing her life and apperance. Thanks for putting this up and helping her realise that although some things have changed, she is not the only one, and she will be able to lead a social life. It took courage! Thanks!!! :-)

  • very helpful and clear. thanks

  • Does this work for an Illeostomy?? Or only a colostomy?

  • Check with your doctor I think it only is colostomy

  • @Lifespanz Thanks I think you are right but I will check, cheers mate.

  • Wow I am so thankful that you put this video up. I am a Nursing student currently covering colostomy. I found your demonstration incredibly helpful and very inspiring. It's amazing that you have enough courage to set an example not only for those with a colostomy but for us caregivers of patients. Wish me luck on my test!!!

  • Hey, just wanted to send you a big thanks for your video. I'm a nursing student in Florida, an I'm reviewing colostomy care. Good care at this level seems to make such a HUGE difference in patients lives and it's unfortunate some programs brush past this so quickly. I'll be sure to mention irrigation procedures to any patients I may have in the future

  • thanks you sir this help me so much for my review in my examination in becoming a nurse..God bless..

  • My mom has a colostomy, because she had vaginal cancer, and one of her doctors *who admitted he was at fault,* Gave her 3 times as much radiation as she should have had via implant, which ate a hole through her rectum into her vagina. I wonder why she doesn't do this. I think it would help her a lot. I'll ask her in the morning, and have her watch this video. Thankyou.

  • I think the part number on the Coloplast Alterna Irrigation set has changed to No.12830

  • I am a student nurse and i found this video very informative and easy to understand great work!

  • Research done in Denmark regarding how much water is needed to ensure effective irrigation

The study comparing daily irrigations with volumes of 250, of 500 and of 1000 ml.

It showed that 500 ml is appropriate as a general recommendation

There was no difference objectively between 500 ml and 1500 ml infused but subjectively 1500 ml gave a feeling of being more effective. From Coloplast Denmark

I am using 1000mls and working fine

  • Sometimes it's quite tricky...if too much water is put in, it can make its way to the small intestine....That happened before and it's a rather traumatizing experience.

  • Here in the UK this option was never at any stage mentioned when given the awful news that I would have to live with a colostomy bag. I know that in the UK I and everyone else are lucky enough to have all the bags, base plates and every other conceivable extra free on the National Health Service, but even so, I think that we should be better informed of irrigation, not just to save a fortune on the NHS but because for many this would help improve their quality of life. Thankyou for this video.

  • Thank you for sharing, it is a great teaching tool. Your calm approach and simple instructions make it seem to be much easier & less intimidating than I thought it would be. Much appreciated.

  • Hi Lifespanz

I will spread the word. I am the chairperson of a stoma support group in Glasgow. It is a support group for people with urostomies colostomies and ileostomies. None of the colostomists irrigate. I have a rare cancer called pseudomyxoma. I ended up with a colostomy and a urostomy 3 years ago. For the first year my colostomy worked great. Then I kept getting blockages. I had to take more and more laxatives for my bowel to work. Thanks to you it is now working without laxatives. WOW.

  • i have a question. and please dont understant me wrong, i dont mean any of this offending. i'm just a little curious. so my question is, how do you know when it's.. well, when it has to "come out".. :/ yeah, i hope you know what i mean by that. anyway, i dont mean this offensive, nor am i trying to make fun of annyone here.

ps, hope everything is still okay, and you're as healthy as any other person. :)

  • I am assuming you are talking about passing pooh...smile. If I irrigate every day then nothing comes out into my bag. If I irrigate every two days then I do get some pooh coming out into my bag so I go and irrigate again

  • Thank you Lifespamz.

Thank you a million times. I just cannot tell you how much I admire you for making this video. I tried irrigation for the first time this morning. It worked and it was not hard. If it was not for your staightforward approach I would never ever have tried it. My stoma nurse does not promote it and really knows little about it. I live in Scotland and it is not something you are told about when you have to have a colostomy.

It will completely change my life.

  • It is really sad that only about 4% of the Western World who are able to irrigate actually do. It is often due to ignorance in the medical practitioners how much of a difference it can make to peoples lives. This brings so much freedom to people of all ages. Please spread the word and tell as many people as you can how good it is and how much of a difference it has made to your life

  • Thank you for sharing this, now I understand how it works.

  • thank you for sharing this, now I understand how it works!

  • We were sent your video and it has made an incredible difference in my husband's life.

Thank you so very much for sharing this part of your life with others that they may also experience some semblance of freedom. He uses the Hollister ostomy patch after the irrigation is complete and is able to go 2 days now.

  • Thanks, Brian. Very informative and very good of you to share.

  • I ordered my first irrigation kit today and naturally went looking for some info and came across your video.

    Thanks so much!

I've had my colostomy for 3 years now, after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer at 44.

  • I hope you never have to make that choice then.

For me, as with most ostomates, it was a life or death decision. I chose to live, obviously. I get to see my kids grow up now. : )

  • This was very informative. Thank you for sharing!

  • Fascinating Brian..thanks for sharing your experience with the world. You are an amazingly positive man who i greatly admire! Annette

  • Thank u so much for this video, I am a nursing student and I have a test on this stuff and the book doesn't do it justice. Thank you so much for sharing and God bless

  • Is there a way to irragate with a one piece ostomy pouch?

  • Irrigation is done with a special irrigation set that you get from your doctor or stoma nurse you put the one piece pouch or mini pouch on after you have irrigated

  • Excellent instructional video! Thank you!

  • Someone asked what sort of bags and caps I use If I am going out somehwere flash and have to look good, LOL or to play Rugby. I use a mini Dansac 829-25. Normal every day I use a Coloplast midi 46349 Ileave this on after irrigation until it starts filling up anything from 24 to 48 hours then I irrigate again. Welland are bringing out an improved flush down the toilet colostomy bag I am looking forward to trialing this. My thoought for the day life should be fun go shit stir friends and family

  • @Lifespanz Thanks for your info. I wonder if you renovated your washroom for this purpose?

  • No we did not renovate our toilet room or bathroom it just happens we have a wash basin close to the toilet which is convenient

  • I am a student nurse, and i think this was very helpful for my studies. I just admire these people that can live a regulare life !! Keep it up and goodluck :)

  • thanks for the video, very helpful!

  • hi thank you so much for your video never knew about this i will make some research about it in my country thanks once again

  • Hi i am a nursing student getting ready to take a test and just reading in the book isnt helpful but when i found your video you explained everything step by step perfectly which really gave me a visual to go by instead of words. Thank you so much.

  • thank u... im a nursing student, and tomorow i need to demo..thanks for the help

  • Thank you so much for sharing not just the technique but also your experiences. The only thing I would reinforce is good hand washing. Awesome!!!

  • hi i was born with a colostomy and for people who are scared of what it might bring just message me with quesstions i will be happy to answer btw im 16

  • @wishlist224 call me at 404 697 0679

  • I am a nursing student and thankful you have shared this experience. This will help me gain insight into how to properly perform this if I need to on a patient.

  • This is SUPER helpful. My husband is likely to need a permanent colostomy soon and he is very frightened of it. You have done many a huge service by making this so matter-of-fact and shown how you just make it part of regular life. Clearly it does not run (or ruin) your life. Quite the contrary. Thanks so much!

  • Thank you for this. My husband just had emergency colon surgery last week and I had no idea you could irrigate and be free of a big bag. I will have to ask his dr. about it!

  • very educational. not many people can make a video like this.

    A+ very well done.

  • Thank you so much!!! Wish you the best!

  • SO VERY HELPFUL!!! THANK YOU.

  • Oh my goodness! I had a colostomy when I was less than a year old because I was born with Hirschsprung's Disease. Every year I learn more and more about the disease and colostomy. I have some brave parents cause of course I couldn't talk and I wasn't potty trained. I had mine reversed after a year and I don't remember a thing about it except the scar I've grown up with.

  • you have just explained my life lol im exactly the same born with it reversed after a year and i have a scar lol

  • High funkin five! So glad I'm not alone :-)

  • Sir thank you so much for posting this video. My grandfather is having a colostomy surgery performed tomorrow and this was very educating for me. Thank you again for this selfless act. God bless.

  • Respect. Your awesome.. Thank you for your self- less act. Now I know how it works and will not forget. Thanks alot.

  • thanx.,sir., so .,much.,

  • Sir, i salute you for your courage & generosity of sharing it w/ the world.

  • Awesome video, and it's very educational! Thank you very much!

  • thanks for posting this video, I ama nursing student, and waas unclear of this procedure while studying for a test, and you cleared it all up for me. I appreciate your selfless act. Have a good one!

  • Agreed....I wish I had seen this 2nd semester. We were all pretty confused. It wasn't explained very well.

Thank you so much, sir. You are courageous and generous for sharing the intimate details of your life with us. Much respect.

  • Respect

  • Thanks for showing this.

  • Hi Brian,

I found your demo really helpful. I'm going to start irrigation next week and can hardly wait. I do have a question though - how do you know when it's time to irrigate again?? Ia there a sensation?? I will be asking my stoma therapist as well but would like to hear it from someone who actually has a stoma.

  • Hi good question many people are not aware that there are no nerves or feelings in the bowel nor stoma. That is why one has to be careful that the water in irrigating is not too hot as one would not feel it. How do I know when to irrigate with me its when faeces start to come out. Experts say you should do it every 48 hours?? Hope this helps

  • my friend has or had the same thing as u got. i hope u get better. ur strong for living threw with that!

  • Thank you so much, i appreciate your help, you're so awesome for posting this!

  • Im a nursing student and this demonstration is a big help, thanks for the video very educational.

  • @Lifespanz Thanks for the video. This is very useful as someone in my family has started irrigation about a month ago. Now working on the 750--800ml range and still experimenting what volume works best. It seems to depend on body size as well. May I ask what kind of stoma cap you're using?

  • thank you very much this helped me alot.

  • thanks for sharing this

  • Cheers to you, I have nothing but respect for you for posting this video.

    Thank you

  • thanks for this - am meeting with the Stoma people in the next few weeks as this appears to be my next step after two operations for vulva cancer..... sadly the margins were not right - and arsehole transplant not an option....(know heaps of people here in NZ that have some to spare too!!!) So from a fellow kiwi this was most educational. Thanks S

  • Thank you so much for sharing this video with the world I have a friend that will be getting a Colostomy .. I hope he's as strong as you..:+) Thanks again....:+)

  • thanks for sharing

  • Sir, I am grateful for sharing this video with us.

  • Thank you for that very educational video.

  • Thanks a lot for your demonstration!!!

I think it isn't simple to show a so private aspect of life in general, and I suppose showing this in particular is harder too.

    But you've even done it.

Thank you, thank you very much!!

(I'm becoming a pediatric nurse, so your teaching resulted very useful for my practice, but also an example I'll can give to my little patients to not be ashamed of what they're "wearing" to improve their health).

  • Great video! i cant wait to start irrigating! i'm fed up with bags! wooooo xx

  • Thank You for this video. I have been respectfull all my life of medical issues. But, since being diag. w/ HIV. I have so much respect for many people with "daily" medical issues. ... So I want to learn so much about medical issues and disabilies which led me to your video. Thank You Again for posting this and Educating me on other daily medical issues.

  • thanks a lot..(^_^)

  • Thank you very much for posting this, I am a nursing student from Kansas, and I found this very helpful since I haven't seen it before. Yeah, as everybody said before HANDWASHING very important, but I am sure everybody realized that by now. Thank you once again Sir.

  • thank you so much for posting this, and I wish you all the best.

Btw at 7.15 when you say you're finished now to do what you like, I don't know if you washed your hands with soap and water. That would be quite important.

  • Hi there yes I wash my hands with soap many times during the process probably every time I touch the sleeve

  • Thank you

  • This is so great it's not as horrible as I thought it would be thanks a lot!

  • Thanks I am also a nursing student. It's great!! but just a comment...maybe just include the importance of hand washing..I know you do..but in the video..looks like you didnt. Thanks.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this video. It's really helpful for me to understand more of colostomy care in my nursing program. God Bless You.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! This is great for my studying! I'm a nursing student.

  • this video is very helpful and I'd like to thank you for posting it. thank you so much!

  • This has answered so many questions for a student nurse. Thank you for posting this personal video. I will be sure to pass on the valuable information to those in need.

  • Thanks very much for posting this Brian, I have had a colostomy for 2 years now (bowel cancer) and to be honest it really has knocked my confidence after having a couple of leaks in public, so I only go out when absolutely necessary. Thanks to watching this video I am shortly going to start irrigation, and hope it puts my life back on track, Cheers mate.

  • thank you for posting!

  • Thankyou for taking the time and effort to demonstrate this very personal practice.

  • Thank you very much for this helpful video from Ukraine!

  • Hi I am 27 and my end up with a colostomy..and I want to know does getting one of these bags cut your life span..and how painfull is it? Does it increase your chance of cancer in the bowel?

  • This does not affect how long you live. It is not painful as no nerves in colon. On increase chances of bowel cancer after 5 years

  • Thanks you SO MUCH for posting this video. I'm about to have the surgery and I'm scared out of my wits. Watching your video has really helped me a lot - just to know that there are options to some of the other bags I've seen. Take care, and God bless you and your family.

  • What an insensitive comment. I can assure you that no one would do this if they didn't have to.

  • I really appreciate you for sharing to us the video...

  • This may be what I am looking for, because I am so damn bothered by the gas noise. Also, I have a lot of leakage and some odour problems. Thanks for posting!

  • its a good thing to use. but its your life and i would rather not use that. i didnt care if i had to go to the bathroom and empty it or passing gas. when you passed gas and couldnt control it would you get embarssed? i just didnt care it didnt bother me one bit

  • how long does it take before your bowels are regulated when starting irrigation? i'm going to start in early january and can't wait to be able to not have to wear bags!

  • Hi there you need to check with your stoma nurse or doctor to find out how long before you can start irrigating. I think mine was about 2 months after surgery. You still need to wear a bag...just in case LOL. I do go without a bag sometimes after irrigation maybe for 12 hours lets the skin repair. Have a look at the mini bags/patches. Good luck its neat

  • Hi there... this is just like having an enema its so good not to have to carry a colostomy bag around and not having bowel control and filling the bag. Colostomy Irrigation gives people bowel evacuation control again. Its wonderful.

  • Guess you had to expect comments from people who are ignorant of the necessity of this.

Wow--what courage to video yourself for the benefit of other people. I have a good friend who is a colostomate and she doesn't like to even talk about it sometimes. Kudos to you! This is a huge help to people.

I have some questions about other complications related to colostomy if you don't mind me sending a message through your channel. I've tried to find a support group for my friend, but not much luck.

  • Hi!!! This video is very helpful. I'm studying for a gastrointestinal test and couldn't figure out this procedure, thanks! You did it just like the book describes it.

  • After watching your vid I´ll try again, but I´ll need a new kit. I´ve my irrigation kit for 14 months (I have an irrgation only three times), and my stomanurse told me "you must change your irrigation kit each six months. Myy kit is like your kit (all my supplies are coloplast endeed).

    Thanks and Hi from Spain.

  • I´ve a colostomy since 12/09/2006 due to a colon cancer. Last year I meet an estomanurse and she explained about this technick and helped me the first time( decontinence was short about 3/4 hours), I did my irrigation two days more with the same result. She told me that is not good for the intestinal bacteria to have an irrigation more than three or four days. Some times I think in having irrigation again, but with a good diet I can stay more than 24 hours "sometimes"

    sorry, more in next comment

  • Hi there I use irrigation when ever I need to and get atleast 24 hours without anything going into my bag. My nurse told me that the large intestine only absorbs water

  • I would imagine that a diet which includes lots of probiotics would help with that. I've known people who get colonics 2-3 times per week, without any negative results.

  • can anyone tell me wether it would be unuasaul for someone aged 26 to have bowel cancer because i seem to have alot of the symptons and wen going to toilet get a sharp pain in the rectum can anyone help cheers

  • go tot your doctor to get checked out

  • Hey! Great video. I have a Stoma bag for life. A friend told me of the existence of this system, so I went looking on the web and found you. I am glad that people like you are in this world and are prepared to share there experiences with others. Very Brave!!! I thank you for a very good and informative video. I live in the UK. I intend to contact my Stoma nurse about this system, I hope that I can get it here, as it looks the biz. Once again thanks, you are a brave man. Jeff

  • wow! great video. keep it up thanks for sharing this informative video. Im a registered nurse here in the philippines and preparing for NCLEX exam. God bless you.
