  • Using a pick doesnt mean you are better or worse. A pick is a tool used to create different styles and different sounds. I use both. Picks make for a sharper, cleaner sound, while finger plucking makes a deeper, melodic, fuzzier sound. There is no right or wrong, it all depends on the sound you want for a particular song.

  • saying not to use a pick goes against the early entwistle pick playing. yes, he actually played with a pick in the beggininng you can find pics on the net.

  • @LegoBricKing It's a dick bass, of motherfuckerbass

ummm i like the shit color, sorry this lke a shit hahahahah

you remember me? i have a guitar, a warlock ^^ with a vox... this sounds good... i do metal.. hehe

  • please correct my mistakes! i thoght that in this solo there was a bending!

  • throw away that pick!

  • You people are really funny. You all use advertising words like "tinny" and "warm" but don't give any actual advice. Non-musical fucks. As for a pick, like someone earlier said, it's just a tool. If you don't like it, well, that's too bad. It's going to continue to be a crucial piece to bass players that matter. Even if you wanna lie to yourself and say the greats don't use picks.... even though many of them do (even if it isn't all the time). Get over it.

  • y de fuck does it matter if he uses a pick. John entwisle uses picks sometimes to play this exact solo

  • del navo

  • pick is a tool just like fingers, amps or whatever..not learning to use a pick is just like asking a drummer to use one stick ....if you cant use a pick your only going to limit yourself, like slap, finger, pick, tap, all just tools to get the job done,..do it or not your only fooling yourself and limiting sounds you have open to you.,.pick playing is as hard as any other method to play right so why the anti pick gang??? some of you really need to open the ears and eyes and do some growing up!!

  • I think, on the parts where you were sliding, John plucked (or picked. whatever.) each not individually, instead of just sliding.

  • Hand positioning sucks

  • Doing it wrong.

  • Is that a Squier Jazz Bass?

  • @BillThrills321 most likely

  • great work, nice visual, easy to copy

  • Super quiet.

  • tab please? ones on 911tabs suck

  • @ebarnes31 go to Bassmasta

  • Also JPJ used a pick on Wanton, which I am pretty sure about.

  • Sounds good, but it's not 'correct'.

  • @ironbuttermilk Entwistle used a pick on this, Summertime Blues, Substitute, Boris the Spider, My Wife and numerous other songs.

  • @MooNTHELooN77 I was not aware of that, and I wonder if it is true, and where you heard it. However, two of the most recorded bassists in history, Joe Osborne and Carol Kaye, did indeed use the pick.

  • @ironbuttermilk check out some live videos of Boris the Spider and My Wife, he's using a pick

  • @MooNTHELooN77 The fact that he used a pick on a song live does not always indicate that he used one while recording. I use picks much more often live than while recording. I asked how you were certain that he used a picked while recording 'My Generation". . . . and so far you have not validated that. Did John ever actually Say that he did in any particualr interview, or are you just supposin'?

  • @ironbuttermilk Well, since he used a pick on every live version of the song afterwards except for the mimed version on the Smothers Brothers, yeah, I guess I'm just supposin.

  • @MooNTHELooN77 Who Care? GET IT?Who cares.. Anyway play it the way YOU want it,Everyone interprets songs a bit diff so why bash someone over a pick being used or not,I watch bass vids all day being done wrong or in a diff position or w/w out pick etc...,just because I can play it a bit more proper does'nt give me the green lite to flame another bassist, and there's ALOT of them here that really deserve a good flogging,it does'nt make me any better or any worse to see it done incorrectly.

  • @cottonfever1221 I never said it was done incorrectly, that was ironbuttermilk. I was noting that this person was playing the song "correctly"; as in, the same way that Entwistle himself played it. Calm down.

  • @mewoaklandlocal it's not that hard to play black dog without looking at the frets..

  • i didnt like how you strummed it, but i gave it a thumbs up cause the sound was fantastic!

  • Come on people, the endless discussion on using a pick or not is ridiculous.

If John freakin' Entwistle (and many others) used a pick on a considerable amount of legendary rock songs, what the hell is the problem?!

  • picks are good for some songs like this when you realy want to hear the bass through the rest of the band.

  • @gravew0lf picks are for before you learn to play

  • nearly

  • Good.

  • ia this marcus miller bass?

  • @ThePeace0815 i think it is a squier vm jazz

  • Harley Benton bass?

  • Im a bass player and i use fingers. Thats my choice. But my 4 fav bassist. are

Andy fraser ( Free) and John Entwhistle both use fingers and Martin turner ( Wishbone ash) and roger glover ( Deep purple) use picks. Just a personnel choice and thats it . Ive see a bassist use finger/picks and just his thumb on a gig all to get best sound from his bass/amp

  • @blindboybenton john wasnt onlt a finger picker - he did also use a pick

  • @Smoothbassline John used both techniques simultaneously.

  • Great cover. You played well, just need a little more feeling

  • Considering the first bass guitar was made to be played with a pick, you're all stupid for arguing about it.

  • i noe im kinda "picky" (hahaha) but he used his fingers on this. but good job whatsoever

  • nice Squier. great sounnd

  • that is a fine bass you have there!

  • great cover! sounds just like it is! could you send me a tab of your solo cover?

  • I think that a true bassist play with the fingers....

  • @yuricbj I complety agree

  • @yuricbj No man!! A true bassist plays with whatever the song needs!! I have learned to play with the pick when I was 12 and continued using it till my late teens, I stopped using pick and used my fingers, today I am 43 and last week at a session they specifically asked for the sound of a pick (plectrum) so I had to re-visit my childhood technique. I will never again be caught out like that cos from now on I will practice few minutes every week not to get rusty on the pick!

  • @yuricbj So Entwistle, McCartney, Squire, and JPJ aren't "true" bass players?

  • @yuricbj They should be able to, but they should play with the best technique they can to play the notes like they should be played. (In this instance, yes fingers are the best.)

  • what kind of bass is it squir or fender

  • can you post the tab some where that would be great

  • imo the only 2 bassists that changed history are john and jaco pastorious

  • @electricrevelations even though i know that entwistel is the superior bass player i still like les claypool more!

  • nice interpretation of what he plays, but not quite correct

Flea is worthless in the history of bass btw, just saying

  • you morrons all this discussion about the pick? he can perform the song as he wants to! he is playing bass, not trying to be John ''THUNDERFINGERS

  • yeah but a good bass player never uses a pick lol but hell he can play way better than me lol

  • @oldstylelife a good bass player will use a pick when needed. such as this song

  • do you really believe that bull shit?

  • playing is playing in my book but fingers get a much better sound than a pick does

  • @benjammin221 oh does it? depends what you want...

  • A good bass player can do both.

  • Comment removed

  • john entwistle don' t use the pick in this song...

  • Yes he did. The only footage of John using his fingers on My Generation is from the Smothers Brothers appearance where he was miming. @Nicci16able

  • he used a pick at times though

  • I don't believe john entwistle ever rly used a pick,,, i could be wrong, but i know he did develop his own technique called "The typewriter". RIP John.

  • Lol, does it even matter if you use a plectrum or fingers? Why is it so important to you dumb asses that you must argue and dispute about it. You can do whatever you fucking want, as long as it gives you a sound you like.

  • They don't ever plan on being real musicians

  • @confess5 you get a better thicker tone out of the fingers. Its too easy to cheat with the pick and you get a really tinny thin tone to it.

  • moral of the stroy is it doesn't matter if u use a pick or not. I play with my fingers, but when i play stuff by guys that use picks like Yes, blink 182 and green day, i use a pick. Flea(If you dont know who flea is and you play bass then your a complete poser) flea was interviewed and he said that it doesn't matter if you use one of not. He said when hes just playing and not performing he uses one. He says some of the best bassists only used picks. SO just stop argueing and learn u can use one.

  • @footballbumm1323 Thank you, could not have been stated any better than that.

  • i think the best bassists can choose to use a pick or their fingers to get the right sound for the song theyre playing.

iv only been playing bass for a about 6 months now and using both styles ive noticed is the best approach

  • jason newstead was an amzing bass player, he used a pick so yer ur right, then there was cliff burton. he didnt. so yer it does not matter.

most people use one for songs which need alot of endurance they dont have, or its to fast

  • fleas overrated

  • @footballbumm1323 flea hate picks

  • @MrHenk1121 Flea uses a pick for the chorus in snow...

  • playin' with a pick might sound more powerfull but it's not all so technical i believe...

  • Good.

  • pick? don't fuck me, man!

  • T______________________T

  • i fell asleep

  • loose the pick

  • john entwistle used a pick on this song...

  • yea and mike dirnt from green day uses a pick

  • Well Green Day is the most uncreative fucking band to ever come into existence.

  • well... maybe

  • Let's not be picky.

  • pick?:(

  • who cares? really alot of punk bands use picks. tools basist uses a pick and matt freeman from rancid an theyre both badass

  • but :(

  • John Entwistle was voted, BASSIST OF THE MILLENIUM in 2000

  • by who?

  • Bass Player Magazine and Guitar Magazine

  • You really do say that on every video lol

  • @MrTrajan69 More like bass bassist of the century... Bass guitars didn't exist in the pre-1900s...

Just had to say it :P hehe...

  • @RadioMasterDude actually they did, they were simply guitarrones

  • he didnt use the pick for the solo genius.

  • i have that bass

  • Great cover

What bass guitar are you using ?

  • @ronnelamir its a Fender on Squier Jazz Bass :-)

  • Thanks

    it sound's great !

  • nice job on the solo, btw

  • Jesus H, people are so ignorant. ENTWISTLE HIMSELF USED A FUCKING PICK ON THIS SONG, GO LOOK IT UP FOR YOURSELVES. Don't pretend you're an expert on the Ox if you're going to say stupid bullshit like "oh, Enwistle didn't use a pick" or "Entwistle wouldn't approve." And not just on this either. Entwistle used a pick almost as often as he used his fingers, in the studio anyways.

  • Comment removed

  • john entwistle doesn't use a pick !

  • Not correct. John Entwistle use both fingers and a pick. He switch between the two for the sound and the feel.

Every bassist/guitarist should learn to use both!! ;)

  • He did back in the early days when he played his Rickenbacker.

  • Dude why not use a pick? its easier! do it with one. Its good

  • hey what kinda guitar is that?

  • Fender, Marcus Miller special, I believe

  • @frenchie30 a bass guitar... hihi

  • The Ox disapproves of picks -.- Nice job though all the same. 5 stars

  • The Ox used picks sometimes.

  • @knuckles362 I think he used a pick to keep the rhythm while singing.

  • @ox092 I think so, yeah. He often used a pick while singing.

  • @knuckles362 omg woooo i need to learn this and was worried i cant do it with a pick (because i nearly always play with a pick) but you can :O oh em gee you jus made my day lol

  • @ihategerman1 lol dont worry man. Any song can be played however you want. DOn't let people restrict you.

  • @knuckles362 Most bassists use picks during studio recording for a more 'percise' sound.

  • @ClassicRockMan95 Yes, that's true. The pick brings a lot of clarity to the notes.

  • @ClassicRockMan95 if you use a pick get lessons fingers are more precise if you can use them properly

  • @knuckles362 why in the world when someone that has been nicknamed with thunder, due to his fingers...ever use a pick?

  • @newoaklandlocal Obviously because he wanted to. Picks give a different sounds, and for me, it was harder to get good at pick-style than fingerstyle. Fingerstyle came naturally.

  • @newoaklandlocal John Paul Jones used a pick on black dog. He almost always used his fingers. Maybe he wanted a different sound. Or maybe the bassline was a little too complicated to use fingers for. Go try to play black dog with your fingers and you will understand.

  • @jimihendrixtribute black dog?..really?? that was like one of the first songs i ever learned...i got to the point where i could play it without even looking at the frets

  • @jimihendrixtribute As a bassist, I totally respect the use of a pick. It's just for different sounds, and every bassist should master both, fingerstyle and pick. But I think you didn't choose a proper example. Black Dog is an easy song, whether you use fingers or pick. Some hard pickstyle basslines maybe would be from Tool (Justin Chancellor) or Carles Benavent, don't you think?

  • nice bass, mines better but dont use a pick either u faker

  • He played live with a pick quite often, actually.

  • John Entwisle used a pick to record this, but he always said he wishd he didn't. Live he never touched a pick. This song is ment to be played with fingers.

  • NOT BAD

  • did you finger that out by ear? Too fast 4 me to.

  • It's very simple. Learn the blues scale and you'll figure it out instantly.

  • you say that for everything

  • So? It works.

  • con púa ???? q mal es una ofensa hacia entwistle

  • I gotta agree that it's good to dabble in every style you can, that way, you can accually learn and develop your own style by taking parts from other peoples tried and tested techniques!

I mean, I've taught myself fingerstyle, pick style and pop n' slap. Even though I hardly ever use a pick, It's still good to know...

    =]

  • Lay off the kid, a truly great bassist plays with both.

The Ox himself played with picks, fingers and thumb...

  • what does playing with your fingers or pick have anything to do with your skill? A lot of PICK style bassists play with a pick because it suits their music and in some cases can be more comfortable (not necessarily easier). Having said that it would be best to learn both finger and pick plucking styles. Look at Geezer Butler, finger style and a great bass player. Look at Paul McCartney he fronted bass playing to rock songs and he uses a pick.

  • tienes que dejar ver bien los punteos

  • is that the squier custom jazz bass

  • im a bass player and i think no one can mach up to entwshitle, this guy is doing easy cords something someone who was just starting to learn. and if you wont to be a good bass player use your fingers like most of us out there, but hay he did beater then i could lol.

  • You're such a bass snob. You're naive and ignorant. I use fingers, thumb and pick, it gives you a different and unique sound. You can't call yourself a good bassist if you just use fingers, thats being narrow minded.

  • you know you dont need to be a dic.

  • Oh I did, because what you said frustrated me. And was extremely ignorant to Bass.

  • bass snob, used that many a time on here, cudnt agree with u more mate!

  • tabs plz

    i loved it

  • It doesn't really matter that he used a pick. It's just that entwistle didn't use one

  • ....Entwistle did use picks...Often.

  • i second that^^

  • Entwistle did use a pick depending on what he was doing and what phase he was in. He always used a pick for My Generation from videos I have seen.

  • Yes he did. Mostly when he was singing as well as playing (which seeing that he did a lot of vocal harmonies in the band means he used a pick a lot of the time).

Watch "A Quick One" from the Rock and Roll Circus here on youtube and you can see he has picks jammed round the pickguard on his bass.

  • He actually did use a pick for most of the song; he used his fingers for the solo.

  • I love pick versions, but my favourite version is the Kids are alright version and he played with fingers there, shows how amazing a song can be played using both styles :D

  • this is amazing. helped me learn the solo. just wish it showed the beginning of his fretboard too. :(

  • Why does it matter so much he's using a pick. It's not that big of a deal. I use a pick, and I'm sure half of the bassists out there use them.

  • go out side....

  • Hmm...So you're bashing the usage of a pick...When the very man who created this bass solo was using a pick during the recording? And who very often used a pick during live performances of My Generation?

Have you listened to Live At Leeds? The majority of his playing is done through a pick.

  • yeah this stuff like: real bassists play with fingers... it sucks.

REAL bassists can play fingerstyle, with a pick, (and slapping)

  • Using a pick opens up the player to a whole new range of tones that you ignorant 'pick haters' will never have.

I primarily use my fingers, but I'm not opposed to using a pick every now and then.

  • i dont get why this vids only 3 stars, i thort it was good? have u got any tabs for this?

  • now do it with fingers if u want respect cus it really isnt hard with a pick i can to it myself

  • respect the fuckin sound not how hard the piece is to play...

  • People use picks, fingers, pops and slaps all for different sounds, so who cares if this guy uses a pick?

  • you use what the song requires. a good bassist uses a pick his fingers and knows how to slap. make fun of the pick all you want but when you have to miss a gig cause you got no pick chops your going to be the one looking stupid.

  • With that logic, ketxela, It's the same as a guitarist forgetting a pick, not JUST applying to bass. So you're saying guitarists shouldn't us pics?

  • Yeah this kind of sucks...

  • All these "bass players don't use picks" comments come from non-bass players, lol

  • U dont gnow crap

  • I'm going to let this one speak for itself.

  • Hmm, Bruce Foxton and McCartney used picks, and they're two extremely influencial bassists and for the flea fans out there, he used a pick in don't forget me. Fuck off naive bass snobs!

  • loser get a life

  • I have a life? What suggest that I don't? MUG!

  • I prefer to play with a pick because I simply like to play with a pick! I don't care wether other bassists play with their fingers, with their thumbs or with their toes. Just play with what you like best! There are plenty of great bassists who play with a pick.

  • The problem here is not fingers vs pick. I believe he may be using the wrong pick.

  • hahahha

  • Picks are ok if you can play the part with your fingers but want the grindy sound of a pick. I personally think picks are for guitars but whatever.
