I recognize PJ has talent and you are all close to him, but by any yardstick Elvis is more talented. Unless you just want to throw out everything (record sales, #1s, Top 40s, etc.) and say "In my Opinion he's the best." Which you can do but with that type of comparison you could pick ANYONE and make the same case.
PJ certainly isn't a better singer than Elvis as far as the public is concerned. As you would be hard pressed to find 10,000 people who have ever heard of him. And as to range, they are rather close, which is what any fair minded person would say. Elvis was at about 3 octaves and his versatility is well known while PJs is not.
But I've heard PJ sing HURT and it is quite bad compared to Elvis' version, though he may have just been off that night.
If I had to pick a pop singer with the best voice it would be Elvis in a run away. PJ has a strong voice but Elvis' ballads are superior, while Elvis also sings anything well. PJ too, but he's no Elvis.

I was pretty specific in my comments the Best Elvis. Plus the fact that you refer to PJ as the best Elvis speaks for itself. I can also sing rather well but certainly don't have the power that Mr. Proby has in his voice. I'll send everyone a link once I get it back up this week, however. And anyone with an inkling of knowledge cans see that PJ oversings. In fact it is the most often mentioned characteristic associated with him aside from going broke.
Oh dear Christopher I don't think it's a good idea to pass the opinion that PJ oversings for goodness sake. We aren't voice coaches we're fans who want the whole package!! P J has the whole package and it's also not wise to say he isn't as good looking as Elvis as that again is "beauty in the eye of the beholder" and for me there is no contest PJ was a handsome looking man then and boy he has only improved with age!!

. As a voice coach I can tell you that he oversings, uses too much bravado, and comes off as a parody with far too many hand justiculations and dramatics. Extremely bad luck, too, coming in the age of Elvis, as while he has a great voice, he lacks a lot of the subtle qualities of Elvis' voice. And while he's a nice looking man, Elvis was just about the best looking man there was in his prime.
