Wow! thats a big one! maybe she was also through heat or which ever they would call it for females they breed in the spring, so part of her puffy belly could be holding eggs waiting for a male.
Ok, there are ups and downs to goldfish breeding. Natural is of course beatiful, but someone out there says its not enough and starts artificial breeding. Anything could be considered natural depending on point of view, No matter how complicated and fancy a goldfish can get, it still has the blood of its natural, beautiful ancestors.
But otherwise, again, it's all a matter of taste. I personally think fancy goldfish are abominations, much like parrot cichlids, flowerhorns, and a lot of other super-domesticated pets.(Dogs and cats are no exception.) It's frightening that people would go to these lengths of breeding to make an already naturally-beautiful creature look this unnatural for simple aesthetic reasons. There is a true beauty in an un-domesticated creature that you are really not connecting with, and it confuses me.
Did you study fish kept in proper living conditions or in too-small tanks or bowls? Just to make sure. To me there is beauty in both un-domesticated organisms and domesticated creatures, one arising from natural selection and the brutaly intracate world of nature, and the other from a rich history and cultural significance, and from aestetics and genetics in both. There is no such thing as 'true' beauty, as how can we even define false beauty? It's all in the eye of the beholder.
In any case, nature produces organisms just as crazy, it's just the organisms have had more time to smooth out the kinks, as it were. Given time and smart breeding, any proplems can be worked out. The alternative is to stop breeding goldfish and to loose them forever. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree.
Like a koi is a mutated version of a common carp, beautiful and hardy, But not as hardy as a wild carp and has a weaker immune system. And I have tastes sometimes for specific parts of a goldfish types body and I just want to blend those parts together. Like the Hardiness and face of the fantail, the fluttery tail of the Oranda, the neck bump of the Ryukin, the beautiful verticle view of the Ranchu, I would pay almost anything for something like that... Anything.
I am in the same thought as you. To me, this fat little fish is more of a carnival curiosity than a specimen of beauty; much like persian cats with their faces so short that they can't eat or poodles with such "square" conformation that they can't run or jump. I prefer ordinary comet goldfish over a fish that can barely swim.
I completely agree! Natural = beautiful. I have about 7 full-grown comets in my backyard pond with 3 koi and 2 bluegills. The comets are nearly a foot long, and swim peacefully with their koi cousins. I wouldn't trade such beauty for anything! I wish more people could just appreciate natural beauty more; every life form's body and mind are designed for a specific way of life, and tampering with it could damage them or others that interact with them.
I envy you! I have a 100 gallon aquarium where I keep my 4 comets and 2 shubunkin (O.K., so I'm a bit of a hypocrite as the shubunkin is a more domesticated type...). I would *kill* to have a nice pond to keep them in!!!
Hehe... Well, my dad's a carpenter, and he built it when we moved in years ago. It's pretty easy to maintain- we use a UV sterilizer to keep the water clear, and we feed them a great mixed diet. But there are a LOT of raccoons and possums in the neighborhood, and over the years, we've lost a few fish. We put a heavy metal cage "roof" over the top so nobody gets in, and so far, it seems to work. But your setup sounds great! Far batter than other people's setups! Keep it up! :)
The point I was trying to make was that, having studied fish physiology throughout my years as a researcher, I can assert that the body of a fancy goldfish is bred to be considerably shorter and wider than of a comet goldfish or a carp, thus bending the spine dramatically, as well as compressing all internal body structures. Many of the organs experience decreased efficiency in digestion, osmoregulation, and blood circulation. They also experience considerable hinderance in swimming in general.
I think the fish is gorgeous. And for those who think that it is cruel to breed fish like this, well think about some dog species like teckel and basset. It's just the same thing. By the way, for this fish, having a nice shape like this and color, he must be spoiled and groom. You guys don't know nothing.
OMG!!! U should be ashamed of yourself. Does poor things breeding them like that messes up there organs. that should be considered animal abuse. I have an Orando only 3in long does not have a fat body and is still adorable.
The organs are only messed up when a goldfish is kept in an improper environment (less than 10 gallons per fish at least) due to stunting, in which the body stops growing but the organs do not. Orandas, like yours, regularily get anywhere from 5-10 inches long. Yours will most likely get that big.
I couldn't agree with you more! It makes me sad how people treat goldfish in general like crap because they're considered "common" or "stupid," even though they are some of the only fish that have successfully been trained to play games like soccer underwater with other goldfishes, and can be taught to pull a string that rings a bell when they're hungry. It's society that makes other forms of life in general look "inferior" just because of aesthetic reasons. It's really dumb.
Though I strongly dissagre with many of your points on the breeding of goldfish, on this I agree. Goldfish are very intelligent and personable fish, and deserve proper treatment and care (which the fish in these videos are obviously given). One thing that really angers me is the practace of keeping goldfish in bowls or too small tanks.
I know that liking or hating the breeding of many "fancy" animals is a matter of taste, but it is also a matter of ethics. Honestly, YouTube is an improper place to discuss either of these subjects in depth.
i absolutely love Ryukins! and fancy goldfish in general i had a black moor that gave kisses he would wag like a dog when he saw us ,so cute! he was real character
Good point. I really feel sorry for the little guys- they never had a chance! I just hope they at least go quickly, like being slurped up by a grouper or an oscar or a lionfish or something like that.... Good point!
Breeding fish to look like that damages their organ systems and bone structure. It's cruel and pointless. Don't people have better things to do than breed fat, crippled fish and put them in shows? I mean...damn. I am disgusted by this. Don't you see this is wrong?
do you guys think that fish knows how to swim anymore??? coul barely lift itself... but, anyhow, they are my favorites of all... i Love GOLD FISHES....
