  • Thank you so much for putting up this recipe Chef Jason Hill! I found this recipe a little over a year ago and I have made it for my family and friends ever since. Everyone that tries this recipe loves it and thinks it is very authentic. You are a great chef and I hope you post more videos on how to make authentic mexican food soon.

  • @PunkReggaeSka4life Thank you! Have you seen our latest on huevos rancheros and tomatillo sauce. I think you'll like them!

  • Me and my girlfriend made this salsa a couple of years ago when I first found your videos. It is our go to salsa recipe. I like the canned tomatoes myself due to them being canned at their peak of ripeness. The only other ingredient that I add is a little bit of apple cider vinegar. And if I have time I like to grill tomatoes and that adds a nice little smoky flavor. Good stuff.

  • @Derek2001 Thanks so much! Glad you like the salsa! We cringe at this video since it was one of our first attempts on YouTube, but the recipe itself is a good one. :)

  • @ChefTips hey, you gotta crawl before you walk.

  • @ChefTips I have noticed you've started adding some bloopers here and there. My advice do a take where you have a boom mic fall into frame like int those cheesy B-movies. And you need to take a trip to a water park; find one that you have to use an innertube and just before going down, say, "Thanks for tubing in." Should be pretty classic

  • @Derek2001 Haha. Great idea! But I'll have to wait until it warms up a bit. :)

  • @Derek2001 i thought it was always warm in Calaforneyea

  • I used two small cans of tomato puree and cut up two roma tomatoes with sea salt. I mixed and poured half into one bowl and then added more jalapenos and about half a cup of the vinegar the jalapenos came in and mixed it down to a really watery salsa which is how i liked it. my girlfriend liked the chunky less hot and I liked my fine hot salsa. thanks for the recipe!

  • @Brettisgg Thanks for sharing your tweaks/additions to the recipe. Sounds great!

  • doesit have tobe a white onion

  • @harrysachdev1 No, it can be red or yellow, or even green onions.

  • Hey, thanks for this recipe i use it a lot, and everyone loves it, i use fresh tomatoes when i have them but don't really notice too much difference if im being honest.

I noticed when i was following a recipe for guacamole that the ingredients are pretty much the same as for this salsa apart from the avocados, so essentially you could mash the avocados and add this salsa to make guacamole. I've yet to try it myself, but don't see why it wouldn't work! Has anyone tried it?

  • @madfistbt

That's probably how guacamole was invented! =]

  • This was an amazing video! I HAD to subscribe. Thanks for all of your amazing tips and recipes.

  • @twilightdagger Thank you!

  • why would you make FRESH salsa and use canned toms... i thought the whole idea, was all ingredients are fresh raw and no preservatives kinda of salsa ???

  • @yarnman60 Pico de gallo uses fresh tomatoes. Many people can their tomatoes during the summer and this is a good way to use them.

  • I don't want to be rude or mean but, if you want the real Mexican flavor, you need to use only fresh ingredients, otherwise is going to taste like canned salsa, so I agree with MahoganyMarmalade. But I really appreciate that people like you take the time to make these videos. Also if you grow your own tomatoes and chiles in the backyard it would have a wonderful flavor mmmm!!

  • So here is the correct recipe for salsa. 3 large Mexican tomatoes, 3 Mexican Jalapenos, 3 Cloves of wild garlic, 1 Tbs of cleaned rock salt, Juice of 1 lime + the zest of the lime, 1/2 cup of Cilantro, 1/2 of a Large Yellow Onion and 1/2 Tsp crushed red pepper. Mince the garlic and cilantro, dice the tomatoes, onion, and jalapenos. Mix all ingredients in large bowl and place in refrigerator to allow the salt to sweat the juices out of the other ingredients. Serve Chilled.

  • i love making it by using fresh ingredients bt cilantro is really hard to find this days...thanks for sharing ur recipe

  • what was that crunchy noise at 2:21...salt?

  • @trenabolx nope........thats corn chips sound.....u funny

  • @trenabolx onion

  • Damn I wanted to make this recipe today but the grocery store was out of cilantro leaves and pickled jalapenos.

  • @jeroenamilli Darn. Is there another store around?

  • @ChefTips The greengrocer was on vacation but I made the recipe with cilantro herbs. I tasted well but I've decided to make it another time with cilantro leaves. I'm from the Netherlands by the way.

  • @jeroenamilli Thanks! Hope you liked it. By the way, what do you mean by cilantro herbs vs. leaves. I'm guessing you used them dried?

  • @ChefTips Yes I used them dried. Yesterday I made the recipe with cilantro leaves for guests and I served it with nachos. The guests were loving it. Thanks for the recipe! I work in a brasserie and there they made the salsa with parsley that tasted well too.

  • @ChefTips and I used chilli pepper.

  • the comment about cilantro is true. at first i thought the taste was "soapy" and couldn't stand it. now i love it dearly

  • Everything is perfect, but how can you guys eat cilantro? To me it's flavor is so annoying and it does not blend with other flavors, you can feel it so clearly everywhere... too clearly actually.

  • @Zazmanaz Thanks. Cilantro is an acquired taste. Either you love it or hate it!

  • @ChefTips -- If I may reply to both posts, it IS an acquired taste for many, but then to say that "you either love it or hate it" is a contradiction (IMO). Much like coffee, beer and cigarettes, ACQUIRED TASTES, I'll never forget the first time I tried it, I was thinking "how could they ruin salsa in such a way", I had to ask the waitress to take it away. All these years later I have it growing in my garden along with the other ingredients needed for my fire roasted salsa. Thanks for the vid!!

  • @ChefTips Chef I agree that is it an acquired taste. When I first tasted it I thought it tasted like soap, but now I really like it. Quick question, is your salse thin or is it chunky? Personally I do not like thin salsas as thin to me is like a sauce. I like it chunky. Thanks in advance for your response.

  • @Zazmanaz I used to hate cilantro but, now I love it. I acquired a taste for it by removing the leaves from the stem. Finely chop the leaves and sprinkle in home made soups. It won't take long before you are doing a coarse chop on the stems and leaves and adding handfuls to everything you eat.

  • i have eaten from the hands of a woman that pounds her own corn tortillas, fresh. Forgive my knowledge english, but I like Jimmibear13, he say fresh Tomatoe... this is good also. Sometime, you know, the air around you determine your love of food

  • hi jason! was wondering if we can use regular salt?

  • @MsKijaro Yes, you can. Enjoy!

  • Just wanted to tell you I made this salsa for my son's birthday party and everyone loved it! I added to serrano peppers like you suggested and I got alot of recipe requests.

  • @cindycatcorn

That is so cool! Thanks so much for sharing this. I really appreciate it!

    Cheers!

  • I made this today... delish!!!!!

  • @LRoss1069

    Thanks!

  • can i make this a night before?

  • @kooky715 Sure!

  • @ChefTips how many does this serve?

  • @kooky715

Hello. It makes a little over a quart.

  • Mm, the recipe looks easy and amazing. Maybe you should show the finished product though so there will be a clearer view on what the end product should look like.

  • @mizaness

I know. Sorry, this was one of my first videos. We learned that after making a couple of vids.

    Cheers!

  • silly question, but is there a certain amount of time to blend it all or just blend until smooth?

  • @cindycatcorn I like to pulse it so it's still a bit chunky. Use your own discretion to make it the texture you like. Thanks! Jason

  • Great recipe! Thanks for sharing it. I often add some green onions for a little additional bite. Everyone loves this salsa...really is amazing.

  • @rushnut2112

    Thank you for your response!

  • yummmmmm

  • i made this salsa and thought it was great thanks for sharing with us. This is exactly what i was looking for

  • @MrGtafan44

Thanks for commenting! I appreciate the feedback!

  • seriously? Canned? I use fresh everything- excact same ingredients as this and its fantastic- but do not use canned anything!

  • @viseleps

Ok. Maybe we should do a side by side taste someday ha ha!

  • Canned tomatoes? Pickled jalapenos? What. If you want an authentic salsa recipe, use only fresh ingredients. No pickled or canned anything :\

  • @MahoganyMarmalade

Look, my mom's best friend from Mexico shared this recipe with us years ago. I know there are several salsa recipes out there that call for fresh ingredients and are very good. This recipe is really good too. I wouldn't bother making this video if the recipe stunk....

  • @ChefTips im mexican and i made this salsa thanx to your recipe...and i give you 5 STARS!

and believe me i know about salsas..don't mind the negative comments bro..........

  • @gangsterpelon13

    Thank you sir! =]

  • @MahoganyMarmalade I use fresh roma tomatoes, fresh green chillis, salt, garlic, cilantro, the juice of a lime and a tiny splash of white vinegar. I chop everything by hand and mix with a spoon. I like seeing chunks of the ingredients. The food processor tends to over do it.

  • @MahoganyMarmalade That's what my dad does. He grows the cilantro himself, grows the jalapenos as well, gets the tomatoes from neighbors and family, he gets the onions and garlic from the store though. I'm not sure if he uses a lime either. He also uses some type of sauce that gives it some kick. It's the most amazing salsa ever.

  • @MahoganyMarmalade Agreed. I got lazy for some reason the other day and got a package of chocolate chip cookie mix (the name-brand kind where you just add the stick of butter and 1 egg) and it was DISGUSTING. Texture was way off and the chocolate chips were stale even after the cookies were baked. And although making cookies from scratch cost twice the price, I wont ever stray from making them w/ my go-to recipe ever AGAIN.

  • just a tip, try cutting the seeds out of the jalapenos to cut down on the spicy flavor.

  • My wife and i really love this recipe! we have used it many times.

we prefer to use fresh tomatoes for that just out of the garden taste.

thanks a million Chef HIll !!

  • I just made this tonight and man its pretty damn good and cheap to make with the canned tomatoes. I made a different kind last night with real tomatoes and its not near as good as yours. Thanks for sharing!!

  • Canned tomatoes not fresh? Please explain thanks

  • I recently tried this recipe, and I LOVE spicy food but this was so hot I couldn't even eat it. May have to cut back some on the jalapeno's.

  • @nshappe Sometimes some jalapenos are more spicy than others. How many did you use?

  • trying this exact thing for new years eve party at my house tomorrow. hope everyone likes it!!!!!

  • @damartin1503 How did it turn out?

  • I wonder if there's anyone who tastes food on tv, and then goes - YUK!!!!

  • @jondow14

    That would be funny!

  • I have used this recipe atleast 20 times. Its as good if not better then what you are used to eating out. Thanks again Jason.

  • @tankmilkman You're welcome! Glad you like it!

  • what is this kosher salt is it jewish or it just the name of the brand

  • @willyham72 It's a rougher-cut salt. You can also use sea salt.

  • how many fresh tomatoes should i use (instead of the can product)

  • @MasterAssassin66 I would use about 4-6 tomatoes.

  • God I wouldn't have been wasting so much money on pre-made salsa if I knew making it was SO easy.

  • @TejasM14

Thanks for commenting! This was our first video. The video is poor quality, but the recipe is awesome!

    Cheers!

  • did you blend it to a smooth concistency or did you leave it a little lumpy

  • @thasnaps We like it a little chunky...

  • Love this recipe with the Serrano Peppers it has become a item that is always in my Refrigerator for me and my son.

  • @RuBeerRun

Thanks for the nice comment. Glad you guys enjoy it!

    Cheers!

  • The secret ingredient in great restaurant style salsa is tomato juice. Otherwise the salsa may be too thick. Do all these things but add some tomato juice for the right consistency

  • @valleysap

    Thanks for your input!

  • if I wanted to use fresh tomatoes, how many should i use?

  • @helen92589 I would use 5-7 tomatoes, depending on the size.

  • @ChefTips thanks.. I'm sure it's gonna be delicious!

  • your union looks good ! but our unions looks, uhh brownish at the outside

  • @23artemis23 You can use a brown onion too!

  • Is he going to mix it and show us the consistensy?

  • @spirit7462

Sorry. No, I blew it and didn't show that. It was one of my first videos. You can blend a little for chunky style or puree' it longer for less chunks.

  • @ChefTips No worries Chef just checking.. thanks..

  • Great video, thanks for sharing your tips and recipes :o)

  • @themanticmakar Thanks so much!

  • I would do this recipe with fresh tomatoes onion and fresh jalepeno... but I would roast them first and remove the skin on the tomatoes... might also add a clove or two of roasted garlic as well... fresh ingredients really make the difference

  • @chyrd

    Sounds great!

This would take a lot more prep time but the end results would be superior!

  • Comment removed

  • Excellent! Thank you!

How long can it be stored in the fridge?

  • @cameo7423

Hello. I wouldn't store it more than 7 days.

  • i like your videos..you speak very clear and show all the ingredients

  • @missgoddessoflove Thanks so much!

  • make sure you go all the way around with the lime when you end up blending it? haha

  • Do you just keep it in the blender longer if you dont like ur salsa all lumpy with tomatoes, and onions? I like mine real ground up and smooth..

  • @WardogWilson Yes, just blend it longer and that should do the trick.

  • I make this recipe all the time. I always add at least a teaspoon of sugar and sometimes a little more after I taste. I sometimes add a teaspoon of black pepper and cumin.

  • @rg1599 Glad to hear you have been enjoying it! I like your changes. May have to try them myself! Cheers, Jason

  • Going to try this, but taking out the onion and replacing the Serrano peppers with Fatali peppers.

  • @FluffyPonBomb Sounds good!

  • @ChefTips It was very delicious, very spicy.

  • @FluffyPonBomb Love it spicy!

  • This is the best recipe ive come across ever, I have only one question. In your opinion would sugar and/or vinegar added to this recipe, add a little more depth? I love this recipe but I feel it is missing something other than spicy'ness thanks for the feedback.

  • @JackBeam01 I like to add a bit of vinegar from the pickled jalapenos. Gives it a nice kick and tang.

  • i see ur salsa looked abit like a soup, cud u do a more chopped one?

  • @mussarat786

Good question. There are a ton of recipes out there for salsa. I could do a whole channel on salsa. I will be doing more salsa vids in the future.

  • @ChefTips thnxx :), this salsa didnt luk veryyy interesting but im sure its packed wiht flavourr... i sound like a cheff hahah :P

  • i made chips and salsa for my friends when watching the game i used ur recipe and i came out aboslutly delicious. WE LOVED IT thank you so much for the video and recipe

  • Beautiful work. Love it. God Bless. making it for my graduation party. :) thanks cheftips.

  • @TICABELLA23

Hope you enjoy and have a fun party! Thanks for commenting!

  • can you use fresh tomatoes like not canned?

  • @ladygaga2010monster Absolutely. Just chop them into small dice and toss with all of the ingredients diced by hand. I wouldn't blend it using fresh tomatoes. It would get too watery.

  • I like when american chefs advertise mexican food more the mexican chefs. like rick bayless. I need to try this with jalapenos, but in my opinion it needs to have other chiles. Also I think you should try to say or do more of a home made mexican food, because I never being in a restaurant that has a good one. In my opinion. Keep up the hard work.

  • @purogto32 Thanks!

  • how come cilanto always over powers my salsa i always have that problem even if i put a little. do you know why anyone?

  • @sharkate7 It's a strong-flavored herb. Just use a tiny bit or omit it all together if you don't like it. Enjoy!

  • omg you are legend !!! i DIDN'T fail my cooking class because i got A* for my own choose dip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks !!

  • se ve muy rica la salsa....ya me dio hambre :P jeje y si yo prefiriria ponerle jalapeno o cerrano pero fresco...

  • Hi! It looks great, unfortunately my english is not so good and I can't understand ingredients of recipe, could you write it down? Thanks

  • @zIzLc You can find all of my printed recipes on my Web site. CookingSessions. Click the banner on my YouTube home page and it will take you there.

  • WOW i am 11 and i make the best salsa in my family my family thinks i am the best salsa maker for them but i doubt it maybe they just want to make me feel good. I did like my salsa i used love on mines

  • This is good stuff. Just followed this recipe and added 3 serranos for an extra kick. It's the closest thing I've found so far to restaurant salsa, and extremely easy to make.

  • tastes good although I prefer fresh jalapeños, serranos and one Habanero.. gives it a nice kick.

also I like how it's supposed to be mexican salsa yet the music is Salsa music which is not even remotely Mexican..

    he he..

good recipe though. that's what counts.

  • Soooooo, whats the difference in making chunky and non-chunky salsa? Is the difference just in using a blender and not using one? And also, was that non-chunky salsa you made?I.....need....to.....know!!! x_O

  • Hi there. A red salsa, such as this recipe, is more of a sauce or puree. Pico de Gallo is the chunky mix that is usually hand chopped. Same ingredients, different texture. Hope this helps!

  • ICH LIEBE DICH! 5 stars!

  • Yep I love that stuff.

  • Do you have a recipe for a green salsa?

  • @ERICTLG

Are you looking for a tomatillo salsa recipe?

  • 1 tablespoon of salt!? That looked like 3 lol

  • No, one is enough!

  • fresh peppers and tomatoes make it a million times better in my opinion.

  • I'd like to make one, for a movie night. can i use fresh peeled tomatoes instead?

I guess fresh ones will make it more "watery"... no seeds then too?

  • Great Recipe, thanks for posting.

  • i wanna try this

is it better to use kosher salt??

  • I use it, but you can use regular salt as well.

  • @puiting0225 you can taste the difference?

  • @mbenson2790

Yes. Try a side by side taste test some day on your tongue.

  • im back with the update...........

i made the salsa and my whole block love it! made it for super bowl sunday

thanx alot i ll be looking forward

for some more or ur stuff

  • Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • Pickled jalepenos. Child please.

  • @TheSasha555

Child please! Haha... Have not heard that for a long time. =]

  • tha't is not real mexican salsa

  • @SALYROSY

Well it was given to my mother years ago by her friend who is Mexican.

  • a simple and good recipe. tried it yesterday and what can i say ?IT WAS GREAT :d

  • Thanks!

  • It looks really good and very easy to make.

  • cant wait to try this. ive been looking for a good salsa recipe like the salsa i get at my favorite mexican eateries and so far all ive found are recipes that have ingredients that i cant get in australia. i can get all of these here so next time i go to the store im getting me a giant can of tomatos and gonna make me up a batch of it.

  • @gangsterpelon13

    No problem. Thanks for commenting.

The recipe is a lot better than the quality of the video.

  • This mexican thanx you! I love to use fresh tomatoes lots of garlic and serranos, I like using the pickeled jalapeño juice on Chili( top secret).

  • Thanks for the feedback. Sounds good!

  • Thanks for the terrific salsa recipe! I have been making something similar with rotel but I think your way will make it taste more authentic.....

  • Thanks! Hope you enjoy it. We've been making this for years and it's always a hit.

  • I created another version of salsa with cranberry an strawberries mixed with chunks of tomato cucumber and bell peppers it was great too :) the parsley makes a huge difference

  • Mexican Salsa Is Done By Fresh Tomatoes And Fresh Serano chile And we Dont Squeeze Lime Try roasting The Tomatoes N Cutting A fresh Green Serano Chile And Chopping The Cilantro to fine Piece's And blend The Tomatoes with Chile Then Add The Cilantro And The Rest . will Come Out Perfect

  • @TheMarylbc36

That sounds good too! Maybe you can share the exact recipe with us.

  • would it work witout lime?

  • Yes, but I personally really like the lime flavor. Let me know how it tastes without. Thanks! Jason

  • ohhh it wass greatt but next time i will add the limeee

  • I can't wait to try this recipe!

  • gonna make this - thanks

  • Does any canned tomato work? Here I just find Italian skinless canned tomato, Italian tomato here is that one that is kinda longer and its pretty much like an egg shape...

  • You should be fine using the canned roma or plum tomatoes.

  • Thanks for the post. I have always wanted to make a salsa like that of the restuarants. Do you have a post of one that is much hotter.
