If anyone as feminine, poised, pretty, and personable as Lesley showed up at our local club on a Friday night, there would be (1) a riot of young guys pursuing her, and (2) a lot of jealous, pudgy, tatooed, unfeminine gals with bad hair and WalMart clothes who wonder why hubby is a stray cat.....What looked magnetic in 1965 still looks very good!
@preciousjey Lesley's Christmas cd sampler features: If Every Night Were Christmas Eve; Winter Wonderland; Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas; Jingle Bell Rock; My Christmas Party. the cd is titled GIFT WRAPPED.
Good memories 1963 in Milwaukee and then arriving in Houston that summer. This was one of the songs I listened to so much as well as Leslie's other hits. She was and still is awesome.
"The little girl with the big voice" was Teresa Brewer's slogan but could apply to Lesley. I was first cued in on her having a big voice when she was going to Sarah Lawrence and I had a former student there and she told me that Lesley and Michael had performed at a dance on campus and how surprised she was at how powerful Lesley's voice was because the Mercury recordings always sounded like a small voice was being compensated for by multiple tracking.
Because of the way Quincy Jones multiple-tracked her I assumed at the beginning and for a long time she had a tiny voice. Then I began seeing her on T.V. and to my surprise found she had a really BIG voice! I always loved her look, totally unlike any other girl singer, very tailored and businesslike rather than glamorous, and that set her apart I felt in a very positive way. Her albums were notable in having no filler. Every track could have been a hit single. A formidable talent.
1963, Incredible! Just think that back in the day a typical top 20 chart could consist of acts like The Beatles, Beach Boys, Elvis, Everly Bros, Four Seasons, Lesley Gore, Roy Orbison, The Seekers etc to name just a few! Compare that to now. I was born in 1963 and I love the music of the sixties, I just wish I could have experienced it as an adult or teenager.

This is why I love old music. These people didn't have Auto-tunes and computers to make their music good, they had to work hard to make it sound good, so they were soo much better live. And they had a lot more emotion in their preformances. Good job Lesley
@manthony1956 Lesley is still touring today and sounds great live in concert. Afterwards, she comes out and mingles with her fans. A very warm and friendly person.
Lesley looked and sounded great on the PBS Special: MALT SHOP MEMORIES. She sang IT'S MY PARTY and YOU DON'T OWN ME. On the DVD (with extras) she also sings SUNSHINE, LOLLIPOPS, AND RAINBOWS. Great show!
@208Marc Lesley sounds terrific today, too. Take a listen to her 2005 album, EVER SINCE. Features a new version of You Don't Own Me. Also features her version of Irene Cara's hit, OUT HERE ON MY OWN (Lesley wrote this song).
OK, just catching "Hey Now" and my monitor is melting right in front of my eyes! The live band is just rocking and Lesley is burning bridges left and right! Lesley is such a GO-GIRL!
Wow! This is such a powerfully exciting video! First, the beautiful singling live- there is so much joy and fun and power going on, you can't help but get a charge out of this. Lesley also sounds just as good, no make that BETTER singing live. Watching her go to town on "You Don't Own Me" demonstrates why I call her singing "Suburban Soul." This girl just had it and could move mountains with her talents. Great post!
Thankyou,Thankyou,Thankyou! This is just so much fun! I've heard about the T.A.M.I. Show but until your wonderful post I'd never seen it. I concur, it was a great time to be in and of America! Thanks for the fantastic, melodic reminder!!!
Lesley's song "America's Sweetheart" is now released on a cd titled HITS AND RARITIES! Also included is her song, If Our Songs Still Make It Why Can't We? More info at lesleygorefanclubdotcom.
Newsflash: A cd of previously released material is being released January 31 , 2011. The great news about this cd is that it contains two previously unreleased tracks Lesley recorded: "America's Sweetheart" and "If Our Congs Can Make It (Why Can't We). In addition, the cd is supposed to contain some "chatter" at the end of some songs. America's Sweetheart clip is posted here on youtube. Check it out!
In the liner notes for the recently released T A M I Show, it says that Lesley Gore was the star of the show..............which featured up and coming Supremes, Rolling Stones, James Brown, Beach Boys etc!
This entire show I watched On PBS recently.. it was so Classy entertainment currently could learn from this show, that's why these stars are still listened to
@skatertool PBS had the edited version of the TAMI Show. Lesley's songs were cut out. She only did Maybe I Know, Don't Own Me, It's My Party and Judy's Turn To Cry.
I was there , Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Sept. '64, & I remember how nervous Lesley seemed until " You Don't Own Me"; she relaxed, hit her stride, & just let that gorgeous voice loose. She was so cute, petite, & totally classy. What a wonderful memory --from a better time. Vocally, Lesley & The Beach Boys owned this Concert. James Brown stole the show, & ohhh, those dancers!! Wolfsky9
@Wolfsky9 That must have been a great time, Wolfsky9. Maybe it was because time was short due to all the other acts, but after seeing this clip, it seems Lesley had to rush through her numbers. "Maybe I Know" usually clocks in at 2 minutes plus. I think she goes through the number here in about a minute and half. I also like with the longer hair. The short piled bob she sported in the mid 60's didn't do her justice.
I just wanted to thank each and everyone for all your very kind and interesting comments! It's great to see so many of you show much interest in an era of what I consider was the peak for our Country, our music, manufacturing, life styles, televison, just about everything I can think of, it was time I'll never forget 1963 - 64! Anyway thanks once again and God Bless!
@bizzarma I was the good looking guy sitting right behind you! Just kidding, I wasn't there, sure wish I was though. Actually I was also 12 in 1963, how time fies!
@dowopper51 Wow! She is amazing! I didn't know she was so good. I had only heard "It's my party" until recently. Then I heard "Maybe I Know" and I had to find out more about this fantastic artist. Since then, I can't get enough of her music. She should have gone on to rule the world, what happened? Thanks for posting.
@airager Lesley graduated high school in May 1964, at the height of her career. In the fall of 1964 she headed off to Sarah Lawrence College and her career was put on the back burner....her education came first. She only did public performances during spring break, summer vacation. When she graduated in 1968, she had little career left.
@stevemichaels2020 Thanks for the information, I didn't know any of that stuff, what a shame! I really like the arrangements and production of her records. Do you know if she used a certain team of songwriters etc? That big band sound is incredible.
@airager Yes, Quincy Jones was a great producer and Claus Ogerman was a great arranger. Mark Barkhan and Ben Raleigh wrote That's The Way Boys Are; and She's A Fool. Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich wrote Maybe I Know,; and Look of Love; Carole King/Gerry Goffin wrote The Old Crowd. Lesley has various other songwriters. She wrote Leave Me Alone; co-wrote I'm Coolin', No Foolin'; A Girl In Love; as well as other songs in the early 60s.
@stevemichaels2020 Thanks once again! It is no suprise to learn that some her songs were written by some of the inhabitants of the "Briil Building". The music has a sound of the "Wrecking Crew" but I doubt that it was them because they were based in California at the time (I think). The drumming certainly has a Hal Blaine kinda sound. I love the whole overall sound. I could listen to it forever!
Not much of a fan of Lesley Gore & only familiar with half of the songs, but this is a great performance! "You Don't Own Me" & "Hey Now" are the highlights of this set.
@Robert4770 Lesley and Quincy chose songs that expressed what Lesley was feeling at the time.....she was in high school at the time....boys, dating, heartbreak. Mixed-Up Hearts; Boys, Boys, Boys; Girl Talk; My Town, My Guy and Me; All About Love. Classic Lesley!
From where I sat, 3rd row, Stage right, I could tell Lesley was very nervous at 1st--but at " You Don't Own Me", she hit her stride, relaxed, & was simply sensational. What a voice--& was she cute!!! Wolfsky9
Awesome-these songs, while pop songs, are still original-if an 18 yr. old on A.I. came along with this ability and original tunes today she'd be an instant worldwide sensation. You took pride in being an adult back then, instead of today- where the average 18 yr,old is stuck on 11 until their 30.
I'm always weary of someone with connections...someone who one deb of the year...but this performance proves Lesley Gore was a true performer who could not be denied.
Amazing: This truly talented lady made gold records, captivated audiences, and did it all at such a young age, without being half-naked, sleazy, and without special-effects soaked videos. Yes, she had the genius of Mr. Jones behind her, but she delivered 100%, no question. We've lost so much in music these days, it's a crime. So many thanks for posting this treat!
@SRB427 Lesley had 19 chart singles in the 60s. She had seven original Mercury albums, and two Golden Hits albums on Mercury (Vol. 1 and 2). I'll Cry If I Want To; Lesley Gore Sings of Mixed-Up Hearts; Boys, Boys, Boys; Girl Talk; My Town, My Guy, and Me; Lesley Gore Sings All About Love; California Nights.
@stevemichaels2020 Wow, totally forgot about California Nights!! Another super great song from an era of music I didn't like much. Thanks for reminding me!
@SRB427 According to the R.I.A.A., they never issued a gold record to Lesley. I realize it is often mentioned that she got a gold record for It's My Party (even stated on the back of Golden Hits album). It's possible that Mercury Records gave her a gold record.
I saw somewhere that Lesley wrote a song for the Ramones but I haven't been able to find out which of their albums it appears on. I know she did more writing for other singers/bands. If anyone has any information on her BTS work it would be greatly appreciated...... (I already know about FAME)
the first time i saw you don't own me i thought something was wrong with the screen. turns out after buying the dvd the director put vasaline on the lens used for "power ballads"
@preciousjey I know, haha. I was sort of hoping they didn't choose Lesley's performance as the time to "experiment" I was watching the DVD and was thinking, 'NO!!! NOT NOW"!
Lesley was the princess of pop at the time. The Beatles wanted their songs to have that full sound that lesley had. according to lesley's meeting with the beatles.
ya i play this all the time on the dvd. she was the teen princess of the time. just hear the audience. they also went crazy for billy j. kramer and the dakotas. and this is live singing. they did two shows. the dvd and this is the second night. you can tell it's live the note changes, some words and the beat. live is the best
@freqazoidiac Have you listened to the commentaries on the TAMI Show dvd? They are saying that Lesley WAS the hit of the show! She is the only solo female on the show and held her own against the heavyweights on there. Lesley made it in the music business because she had talent, had great material and had a great producer (Quincy Jones). You Don't Own Me hit the number 2 spot on Billboard's chart in February 1964. The Beatles had the number 1 and 3 spots.
@stevemichaels2020 I have the whole show, honestly I have to agree w/ Steve, she was the best on the show, or shall I say an equal performance to the Beach Boys, I enjoyed them both, she was the best solo, Beach Boys were the best group, just my opinion. We're all here to enjoy these great memories, not to condemn.
@FTo721 Saw the whole thing, I just don't like James Brown and the Rolling Stones. Only song I liked by Brown was "Try Me" I can understand why you say Lesley Gore is a real woman, she's sure an eye catcher!
@freqazoidiac She far from sucks. And just because she had connections to get her foot in the door doesn't mean she's any less of a talent. She had to WORK to stay there. She wouldn't have made it all these years if she weren't. a great singer/performer. And I for one could care less how she "got there". Thankfully she did because I love her voice and her music. ROCK on, Lesley :)
@zhg0507 Pay no attention to freqazoidiac, he is looking for attention. Why else would someone click on a video or an artist they don't like, it draws attention to themselves. Anyway, Lesley had to have been one of the best female vocalist ever, the girl was great. Thank you for your support!

From where I sat, 3rd row, Stage right, I could tell Lesley was very nervous at 1st--but at " You Don't Own Me", she hit her stride, relaxed, & was simply sensational. What a voice--& was she cute!!! Wolfsky9

Great rare live performance by Lesley.
stevemichaels2020 1 year ago
Awesome-these songs, while pop songs, are still original-if an 18 yr. old on A.I. came along with this ability and original tunes today she'd be an instant worldwide sensation. You took pride in being an adult back then, instead of today- where the average 18 yr,old is stuck on 11 until their 30.

Lesley Gore and Karen Carpenter the two most golden singing voices and greatest female singers.

Visit Lesley on Facebook and Twitter: type in Lesley Gore, several names come up. Lesley is the one with the black and white photo.

the shown version is the secon night according to the the dvd liner notes
preciousjey 1 year ago
@preciousjey Correct. The first night Lesley wore a green dress. For the filmed second night, she wore the suit.

SRB427 1 year ago 3
@SRB427 Lesley had 19 chart singles in the 60s. She had seven original Mercury albums, and two Golden Hits albums on Mercury (Vol. 1 and 2). I'll Cry If I Want To; Lesley Gore Sings of Mixed-Up Hearts; Boys, Boys, Boys; Girl Talk; My Town, My Guy, and Me; Lesley Gore Sings All About Love; California Nights.
stevemichaels2020 1 year ago 191
@stevemichaels2020 Wow, totally forgot about California Nights!! Another super great song from an era of music I didn't like much. Thanks for reminding me!
dowopper51 1 year ago 15
@SRB427 According to the R.I.A.A., they never issued a gold record to Lesley. I realize it is often mentioned that she got a gold record for It's My Party (even stated on the back of Golden Hits album). It's possible that Mercury Records gave her a gold record.

And OMG THEY HAVE LESLEY LIVE IN THE STUDIO! Where's my RECORD BUTTON!!!!!

I saw somewhere that Lesley wrote a song for the Ramones but I haven't been able to find out which of their albums it appears on. I know she did more writing for other singers/bands. If anyone has any information on her BTS work it would be greatly appreciated...... (I already know about FAME)
zhg0507 1 year ago
@zhg0507 I don't remember which song she wrote for the Ramones. Perhaps you could ask her fan club president, Jack, at lesleygorefanclubdotcom.

the first time i saw you don't own me i thought something was wrong with the screen. turns out after buying the dvd the director put vasaline on the lens used for "power ballads"
preciousjey 1 year ago
@preciousjey I know, haha. I was sort of hoping they didn't choose Lesley's performance as the time to "experiment" I was watching the DVD and was thinking, 'NO!!! NOT NOW"!
zhg0507 1 year ago
Lesley was the princess of pop at the time. The Beatles wanted their songs to have that full sound that lesley had. according to lesley's meeting with the beatles.

@RonaldVaughan Lesley's story about Sarah Lawrence and Ed Sullivan was hilarious. I loved the interview. I wish it was a bit longer, though.
zhg0507 1 year ago 2
@freqazoidiac Have you listened to the commentaries on the TAMI Show dvd? They are saying that Lesley WAS the hit of the show! She is the only solo female on the show and held her own against the heavyweights on there. Lesley made it in the music business because she had talent, had great material and had a great producer (Quincy Jones). You Don't Own Me hit the number 2 spot on Billboard's chart in February 1964. The Beatles had the number 1 and 3 spots.
stevemichaels2020 1 year ago 23
@stevemichaels2020 I have the whole show, honestly I have to agree w/ Steve, she was the best on the show, or shall I say an equal performance to the Beach Boys, I enjoyed them both, she was the best solo, Beach Boys were the best group, just my opinion. We're all here to enjoy these great memories, not to condemn.
dowopper51 1 year ago 23
@dowopper51 Well said!
stevemichaels2020 1 year ago 3
@dowopper51 Did you stop watching the show before James Brown and the Rolling Stones came on?
Also, the difference between Dusty Springfield and Gore singing "You Don't Know Me" is that between a woman and a little girl.
FTo721 1 year ago 3
@FTo721 Saw the whole thing, I just don't like James Brown and the Rolling Stones. Only song I liked by Brown was "Try Me" I can understand why you say Lesley Gore is a real woman, she's sure an eye catcher!
dowopper51 1 year ago 4
@freqazoidiac She far from sucks. And just because she had connections to get her foot in the door doesn't mean she's any less of a talent. She had to WORK to stay there. She wouldn't have made it all these years if she weren't. a great singer/performer. And I for one could care less how she "got there". Thankfully she did because I love her voice and her music. ROCK on, Lesley :)
zhg0507 1 year ago 31
@zhg0507 Pay no attention to freqazoidiac, he is looking for attention. Why else would someone click on a video or an artist they don't like, it draws attention to themselves. Anyway, Lesley had to have been one of the best female vocalist ever, the girl was great. Thank you for your support!
dowopper51 1 year ago 13
@zhg0507 Lesley is still out there performing!
