A very good theme song.... Colin Baker was a bit player on Doctor Who years previously... Anyway, the best theme so far has to be David Tenant's version... Although, there will NEVER be a better version than the first.... That's what started it all.... Rest In Peace, Delia Derbyshire.......
@Arzaker It's true, and It's not crude. Colin Baker is better as Maxil in Arc Of Infinity (a Fifth Doctor Serial) and as Jon Pertwee's Son in P.R.O.B.E.: The Zero Imperative (the spin-off film featuring Liz Shaw), but as The Doctor? I don't see him in the part. Same thing with George Clooney, He was great on E.R. and as Danny Ocean in The Ocean's Trilogy, but unfortunately sucked as Batman.
@Arzaker but McCoy's era in the beginning wasn't that good, but he did a lot better than most expect. Remembrance Of The Daleks is my definite favorite of McCoy's era.
It's not the greatest Doctor Who theme, but there is something about it that's very good. It's different but that doesn't mean it's bad. The 2010 theme was a little different but still good. @TsoLan1 That's to you, but to me, Colin was not even good as The Doctor, both the era and his performance, even the Big Finish Audio Dramas. I liked him better as Maxil on Arc Of Infinty than as The Doctor. Check Out my own Sixth Doctor theme video and let me know what you think. It's under the title, Doctor Who: Sixth Doctor Theme.

@TsoLan1 Nope, not really. I'm actually a fan of most of the Classic era Doctor, Including Tom Baker (Genesis Of The Daleks), Peter Davison (The Caves Of Androzani), Sylvester McCoy (Remembrance Of The Daleks) , Etc.. I just don't like Colin Baker's interpatation as The Sixth Doctor. The Only I Liked something CB was in was Arc Of Infinty and the unofficial spin-off P.R.O.B.E.: The Zero Imperative, but as The Doctor, I don't see him in the part. Troughton and Hartnell are awesome!
@TsoLan1 Plus,Colin putting on that Cat Pin angers the hell out of me equally as much as Batman pulling the Bat Credit Card in that godawful Batman film.
He's was quite a good doctor a more shouty tom baker to me the only dvd with him is Attack of the cybermen Vengance of verso sounds good and I really want it I also want the peri and sil gift box set in action figure see this guy he's cool >@batmanmarch
Eric Saward had problems with Colin Baker's casting too. I think he was great. JNT was the worst thing to happen to DW at the time, and he made the Sixth Doctor unlikeable. I HATE it when people say Colin was the worst Doc ever, but it wasn't him! He did his best with what he was givin, which were rubbish scripts!
@Mascro1977 JNT. RTD was awesome IMO. but that is STRICTLY IMO! I hate it when people eat you for stating an opinion. They think your starting a war or something...
@Mascro1977 both were the worst thing to ever happen to Dr Who, both narcissistic control freaks who attracted many like-minded fans, propagandizing themselves, gaining many fanatical loyalists and apologists in fandom. Both destroyed the Doctor's character for cheap sensationalism. RTD had a messiah complex, JNT had a martyrdom complex- courting disaster and wrongheaded decisions to make himself look like the hero/victim against greater struggles. Both forced their complexes onto the Doctor.
I think Colin was a fine doctor - the dynamic between his caring for his companions and his general arrogance/irritability made him interestingly complex, and it helped his companions stand more on their own rather than always in his shadow.
I seen a couple of his stories, but they're all right, I never really liked Colin's acting, and I thought he is the weakest Doctor and should be really better off playing Maxil (his character in Arc Of Infinity) than playing The Doctor. If someone else was casted as the Sixth Doctor, Baker would've reprised his 'Arc' role on The Five Doctors, then developed it into The Valeyard on Trial, since Maxil was a prickish Time Lord who shot The Doctor. That would've made sense.
@Bondfan1995 Colin actually wanted to reprise the Commander Maxil role for Trial of a Time Lord but Executive Meddling wouldn't let him so he was stuck just being the Doctor. Then again, he had an uphill battle before he ever got started as The Doctor. That eye raping coat was NOT what he wanted for a costume. He wanted something like the Ninth Doctor's
Colin Baker, the nearest we've come IMO to the perfect characterisation of the Doctor. Imagine if Nathan-Turner had fucked off when he should've, Jonathon Powell did'nt have to prop up Eastenders financially @ the expense of Who's already limited budget & Micheal Grade was'nt the one dimensional thinking vindictive bastard that he was.Baker in a costume reminiscent of Hartnells, involved in dark, clever, frightening, well written drama, peeling back the layers of his persona story by story.
Colin's Doctor should've lasted longer than it did, possibly right up to the end of the 80's and then have Sylvester take the role for the 90's. I didn't get a Doctor thanks to the cancellation in 1989, except of course Paul McGann in that one off film but that doesn't count.
@Red23791 Blasphemy McGann is the 8th doctor had they ran with it, it would have been epic. But all of 8's stuff barring the movie was handled in audio books. Doesn't count, you bite your tongue
@HieiYYH2 Hey, not shitting on McGann or anything. I enjoyed McGann's doctor, but it was a poor americanised Doctor Who film. I would gladly keep McGann as the 8th Doctor and I do acknowledge him as such.
@HieiYYH2 You just bit your tongue alright, but I thought McGann's performance was the great thing about the 96' film, but almost everything else kinda suck. It was Colin Baker's pre-Clooney as Batman portrayal as The Doctor is one of the things that brought Doctor Who down. Period.
@Bondfan1995 Colin Baker was awesome as the Doctor. He made the Doctor seem a bit unstable which was awesome. He pulled off the quirkiness so well. It wasn't Baker's fault the writers and execs hated him. And if you are trying to say I don't like McGann, you are sorely Mistaken. 8 and 10 are my doctors the audio books and the movie for 8 were amazing especially the last great time war stuff.
@HieiYYH2 Maybe to you, but Colin Baker was one of those actor that shoudn't got the part. He was extremely better as Maxil on Arc Of Infinity. If he still had that part, then he would've developed it into becoming The Valeyard, then when defeated, Baker gets replaced by Michael Jayston. That is what should've happened. The cat pin is the equivalent of the Bat Credit Card.
@HieiYYH2. There has been something of a Colin Baker revival since the Big Finish CDs came out in 1999. I think the show at the time was creatively burned out and Baker was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
@1977Melville omg! tom is and was the best dr. ever! granted i know it's my own opinion but he had oodles more charisma than practically every other dr. combined.
Colin's vision for the Doctor isn't what J.N.T. used, unfortunately. I feel bad for the guy. He really wanted to do a great job and he had his Doctor all figured out, but we got the grating Doctor in the amazing techinicolor time coat instead. He dead wonderfully with what he was given and made the best of it, but I agree his ultimate potential as a Doctor was wasted. The most unrealized Doctor of them all.
I agree, my heart sank when this theme came out of my telly in 1986. We'd waited 18 months for the new series. J.N.T should've fucked off 2 seasons before, when Davison quit.
@MrTrifles Colin seems an underrated doctor. At the time he was unpopular and held the shortest tenure as the Doctor (2 seasons) until Chris Eccleston (1 season).
Despite his unpopularity he did have his fans, and now people are calling him a great Doctor. Clearly he has undergone a reappraisal!
In the country where I live we didn't see Colin's Doctor till 1988, and I remember that my first impressions weren't good. But I really warmed to him and my 1990 school exercise books are full of drawings of hm!
Me thinks you forgot about Paul Mcgann. Some may not like it, but he is officially recognized as Doctor #8. Only made 1 movie (which is a wee bit shorter than a season).
@Maximal32nd I hadn't forgotten Paul McGann; I just decided not to take him into account as poor old Paul only had one movie and no more. Not even a chance to see his regeneration into Eccleston, which I hear he himself was pretty annoyed about.
They managed to turn an eerie and timeless theme tune into a dull piece of crap that sounds like lift muzak, I half expected some backing singer to start singing "shoobadeedoo beedoobadeedoo shoobadeedoo..."
@dutchycooper Most likely Grade, as he hated the programme and was the one who fired Colin. Good thing he has eaten his words when the revival became hyper-successful.
@haydos271 Colin Baker didn't decide to leave, Michael Grade insisted he was replaced. There was no drop in ratings for season 22, and overall (in my opinion at least) the stories were a better written and produced crop than the whole Davison era. The show returning with the ambitious but reduced episode season 23 (Trial) and silly scheduling by a BBC chief determined to kill off the show meant that after the 18 month hiatus the audience was reduced to a level it never recovered from.
@haydos271 colin baker didn't decide to leave, michael grade had personal issues with colin so ordered JNT to fire him. JNT himself wanted to leave the show but grade said that if he leaves DW will be cancelled.
@ACooke108 He was obsessed with becoming famous apparently, which distracted him from doing his proper job, causing him to be very shit at it, which killed the 6th doc, to be precise. =( shame too.
a lot of people say The Trial Of A Time Lord was too long but I say it was the best colin baker story ever why? i hear u ask, 1 Iiked the sets, 2 I felt there was a slight dark tone with Mindwarp, TOATL is really underated so it ran for the season so what Dalek Master was a 12 parts The War Games was 10, the 12 part saga Frontier in Space/Planet Of the Daleks & the trilogies E-pace & The Black Gardian & of the The Key To Time pratically a 26 parter
And I believe it's title is kind of ironic considering that the show itself was kinda on trial at the time. But yes I agree that the length added to the feeling of a real trial. And for also liking the sets here's a thumbs up.
They should have updated the opening when he changed his hair. Why do a lot of people hate him, he was cool. I agree with notgivingatoss73 & MrDB44, the poor man was forced to make his doctor act like a pycho in the scripts.
Thanks for the back up. I stand by what I've said. If you look at Colin's performances, you can tell that he loved the show, he loved the character and the energy and passion that he put into his performance showed his commitment to Doctor Who. If you doubt me, check out his Big Finish Audio stories, particularly Blood Tide and Return of the Krotons
I think if Colin had stayed he'd be the Doctor now. he was a great Doctor. just that shit scripts, an idiot producer and that fucking Jew Michael Grade shafted him . Colin's a brilliant Doctor. So's sylvester
This man is 100 percent correct, I cannot believe many of you thumbs down'd this man and didn't look past the performance. It's quite obvious that he was given the shaft by the BBC by being given shitty fucking scripts and more. He would have been a great doctor had he not gone through all that crap. Don't thumbs down this man anymore.
100% backed up once more. you know, as soon as I saw Colin for the first time in The Twin Dilemma, I loved it. Trial of a Time Lord was one of my most favourite episodes ever. Colin was a great Doctor. No questioning that statement.
Colin Baker got some bad press and some worse scripts. Nobody can blame him for this truly awful version of the theme though, even the current orchestra-blighted effort isn't this bad.
Does anyone know what hardware was employed in the making of this version of the theme? I believe Howell used an Arp odyssey mk III, yamaha cs-80 and a vocoder. Keff McCulloch primarily relied on a Prophet 5, I think. Any clues about Glynn's choice in synthesizers?
Roland Juno-6 for the bassline, second part of the melody and effects, Yamaha DX21 for the rest of the melody, and on the extended version he used the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's Prophet 5 for some effects. Howell also used a Roland Jupiter 4 for his theme too.
I like Colin's series, I don't know why it got such a bad rap. He's easily one of my favourite doctors. It's a shame he was fired so suddenly, his full potential wasn't even realised yet.
@Chev427BB I totally agree with you... people just have to listen to some of the Audio Dramas with Colin as the Doctor, he is superb! I hope some BBC people still bite their own asses for firing him...
@Chev427BB The only reason he was fired was because the Director General of the BBC didn't like him, basically. It's a shame as well + I mean yeah you can point to declining viewer figure ratings, but the numbers declined into Sylvester McCoy's time as the Doctor, and he is regarded as one of the best people ever at that role. Doctor Who's problem was it was lacking direction + creativity by the late 1980s, and it was really outdated by then, in need of a drastic overhaul, which took 16 years xD
@Chev427BB You're right, it was JNT as producer who should be blamed; he made the choice for that arwful costume and as producer the buck stops with him. Colin Baker's 'interpretation' of the character was interesting, but he simply wasn't given enough of a chance to make it work.
He took the footage from The Two Doctors DVD and overdubbed the Trial theme from the VHS release. A better quality version can be obtained from The Trial of a Time Lord box set.
VHS is the winning format of the infamous home video format war of the 1980s. It stands for "Video Home System" from Japanese company JVC (or "Victor"). The other formats in this war were Sony's "Betamax" and Philips' "Video20000".
I suggest you look up "video format war" on wikipedia for more info.
You do the capital letters because that is correct. A name (of anything) or a beginning of a sentence begin with a capital letter. Also, an abbreviation is in capitals so you know it's not a word.

@HieiYYH2 Hey, not shitting on McGann or anything. I enjoyed McGann's doctor, but it was a poor americanised Doctor Who film. I would gladly keep McGann as the 8th Doctor and I do acknowledge him as such.
Red23791 7 months ago
@HieiYYH2 You just bit your tongue alright, but I thought McGann's performance was the great thing about the 96' film, but almost everything else kinda suck. It was Colin Baker's pre-Clooney as Batman portrayal as The Doctor is one of the things that brought Doctor Who down. Period.
Bondfan1995 7 months ago
@Bondfan1995 Colin Baker was awesome as the Doctor. He made the Doctor seem a bit unstable which was awesome. He pulled off the quirkiness so well. It wasn't Baker's fault the writers and execs hated him. And if you are trying to say I don't like McGann, you are sorely Mistaken. 8 and 10 are my doctors the audio books and the movie for 8 were amazing especially the last great time war stuff.
HieiYYH2 7 months ago

The most unrealized Doctor of them all.
the567thDoctor 1 year ago
I agree, my heart sank when this theme came out of my telly in 1986. We'd waited 18 months for the new series. J.N.T should've fucked off 2 seasons before, when Davison quit.
harvland1 1 year ago 2
Colin was a great Doctor, but this arrangement of the theme is feeble
MrTrifles 1 year ago
@MrTrifles Colin seems an underrated doctor. At the time he was unpopular and held the shortest tenure as the Doctor (2 seasons) until Chris Eccleston (1 season).
Despite his unpopularity he did have his fans, and now people are calling him a great Doctor. Clearly he has undergone a reappraisal!
BrionyCoote 1 year ago
In the country where I live we didn't see Colin's Doctor till 1988, and I remember that my first impressions weren't good. But I really warmed to him and my 1990 school exercise books are full of drawings of hm!
Never liked this arrangement of the theme though.
MrTrifles 1 year ago
Me thinks you forgot about Paul Mcgann. Some may not like it, but he is officially recognized as Doctor #8. Only made 1 movie (which is a wee bit shorter than a season).
Maximal32nd 1 year ago
@Maximal32nd I hadn't forgotten Paul McGann; I just decided not to take him into account as poor old Paul only had one movie and no more. Not even a chance to see his regeneration into Eccleston, which I hear he himself was pretty annoyed about.
BrionyCoote 1 year ago
@MrTrifles Yes, the Colin Baker theme is not very inspired, is it?
My favourite Dr Who themes are the ones from Sylvester Mccoy, Paul McCann and Eccleston/Tennant.

@dutchycooper Most likely Grade, as he hated the programme and was the one who fired Colin. Good thing he has eaten his words when the revival became hyper-successful.
dalekusa 8 months ago 6
@ACooke108 I think you will find that the BBC did. JNT both liked and wanted Colin Baker in the show.
Wodanaz 1 year ago
@ACooke108 What the bloody hell does that even mean? JNT wanted Colin to stay on and was forced to replace him. Get it right.
JonathanBones 1 year ago
@JonathanBones He is stating that JNT's bad directing killed the ratings and Colin Baker decided to leave because of that.
haydos271 1 year ago
@haydos271 Colin Baker didn't decide to leave, Michael Grade insisted he was replaced. There was no drop in ratings for season 22, and overall (in my opinion at least) the stories were a better written and produced crop than the whole Davison era. The show returning with the ambitious but reduced episode season 23 (Trial) and silly scheduling by a BBC chief determined to kill off the show meant that after the 18 month hiatus the audience was reduced to a level it never recovered from.
JonathanBones 1 year ago
@JonathanBones Thank you, I didn't need the Discovery Channel program. -.-
haydos271 1 year ago
@haydos271 colin baker didn't decide to leave, michael grade had personal issues with colin so ordered JNT to fire him. JNT himself wanted to leave the show but grade said that if he leaves DW will be cancelled.

@daleksvscybermen How many theories are there? Let's just say that the Sixth Doctor left, okay?
haydos271 1 year ago
@ACooke108 He was obsessed with becoming famous apparently, which distracted him from doing his proper job, causing him to be very shit at it, which killed the 6th doc, to be precise. =( shame too.

paintingtasters 2 years ago 4
a lot of people say The Trial Of A Time Lord was too long but I say it was the best colin baker story ever why? i hear u ask, 1 Iiked the sets, 2 I felt there was a slight dark tone with Mindwarp, TOATL is really underated so it ran for the season so what Dalek Master was a 12 parts The War Games was 10, the 12 part saga Frontier in Space/Planet Of the Daleks & the trilogies E-pace & The Black Gardian & of the The Key To Time pratically a 26 parter
gallafey 2 years ago 2
@gallafey
And I believe it's title is kind of ironic considering that the show itself was kinda on trial at the time. But yes I agree that the length added to the feeling of a real trial. And for also liking the sets here's a thumbs up.
Weeman636 1 year ago
They should have updated the opening when he changed his hair. Why do a lot of people hate him, he was cool. I agree with notgivingatoss73 & MrDB44, the poor man was forced to make his doctor act like a pycho in the scripts.
JBJproductions 2 years ago 2
My guess is that they wanted a contrast to Peter Davidson's role as the 'down to earth yet close to being dull dull dull' nature.

startrekgamer 2 years ago
Thanks for the back up. I stand by what I've said. If you look at Colin's performances, you can tell that he loved the show, he loved the character and the energy and passion that he put into his performance showed his commitment to Doctor Who. If you doubt me, check out his Big Finish Audio stories, particularly Blood Tide and Return of the Krotons
notgivingatoss73 2 years ago 2
I think if Colin had stayed he'd be the Doctor now. he was a great Doctor. just that shit scripts, an idiot producer and that fucking Jew Michael Grade shafted him . Colin's a brilliant Doctor. So's sylvester
notgivingatoss73 2 years ago
This man is 100 percent correct, I cannot believe many of you thumbs down'd this man and didn't look past the performance. It's quite obvious that he was given the shaft by the BBC by being given shitty fucking scripts and more. He would have been a great doctor had he not gone through all that crap. Don't thumbs down this man anymore.
lukaspukas1 2 years ago 4
100% backed up once more. you know, as soon as I saw Colin for the first time in The Twin Dilemma, I loved it. Trial of a Time Lord was one of my most favourite episodes ever. Colin was a great Doctor. No questioning that statement.

Colin Baker is underrated, he's grown on me since watching Trial and i'm glad he changed he's approach slightly
Lab355 2 years ago
This is actually quite good.i believe it is
well documented that the producer john
Nathan Turner disliked the Dr Who theme
which is why it was changed 3 times
during his 9 years in the post.He changed
the original tom baker titles to the starfield
version as he thought it looked like a
journey through a vacuum cleaner pipe.
thekroton 2 years ago
Colin Baker got some bad press and some worse scripts. Nobody can blame him for this truly awful version of the theme though, even the current orchestra-blighted effort isn't this bad.

Does anyone know what hardware was employed in the making of this version of the theme? I believe Howell used an Arp odyssey mk III, yamaha cs-80 and a vocoder. Keff McCulloch primarily relied on a Prophet 5, I think. Any clues about Glynn's choice in synthesizers?
blackforestdweller 2 years ago
Roland Juno-6 for the bassline, second part of the melody and effects, Yamaha DX21 for the rest of the melody, and on the extended version he used the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's Prophet 5 for some effects. Howell also used a Roland Jupiter 4 for his theme too.

I like Colin's series, I don't know why it got such a bad rap. He's easily one of my favourite doctors. It's a shame he was fired so suddenly, his full potential wasn't even realised yet.
Chev427BB 2 years ago 46
@Chev427BB I totally agree with you... people just have to listen to some of the Audio Dramas with Colin as the Doctor, he is superb! I hope some BBC people still bite their own asses for firing him...
sunlightguy75 1 year ago

A better quality version can be obtained from The Trial of a Time Lord box set.

mightypower34 2 years ago
It was uploaded in 2007.
DalekSupreme52 2 years ago
yes i get that but what i dont get is what vhs stands for
PS why do you have to do the annoying capital leters
mightypower34 2 years ago
VHS is the winning format of the infamous home video format war of the 1980s. It stands for "Video Home System" from Japanese company JVC (or "Victor"). The other formats in this war were Sony's "Betamax" and Philips' "Video20000".
I suggest you look up "video format war" on wikipedia for more info.
You do the capital letters because that is correct. A name (of anything) or a beginning of a sentence begin with a capital letter. Also, an abbreviation is in capitals so you know it's not a word.
