This is just one of the many scenes that never fails to give me goosebumps. Especially the tension before Theoden declares,"And Rohan will answer. Muster the Rohirrim!"
During the Western Zhou dynasty in China, King You liked to light the beacons to call the armies for the entertainment of his mistress. When he was REALLY attacked, no one showed up to defend and the Western Zhou fell.
Am i the only one thinking that they have pretty damn good reaction time, conisidering that, they're sitting out there in the mountains, do they ALWAYS look at those beacons? :P
Am i the only one thinking that they have pretty damn reaction time, conisidering that, they're sitting out there in the mountains, do they ALWAYS look at those beacons? :P
for those who didnt see the map of middle earth or didnt read the book, they comunicate with those beacons because that mountains are the White mountains, which form the border between rohan and gondor..well,minas tirith(first beacon) is to the eastern corner of this mountains, while helms deep is in the opposite corner..and edoras(last beacon) is little eastern than helms deep..
The lighting of beacon fires is something that the soldiers on the great walls of China did...which stretched for thousands of miles. So with a good system, yes it could go all the way to London. :)
"...and Rohan will answer. Master the Rohirrim!" \m/
This scene is maybe one of the best achievements in directing in film history. The mountains and the flames as a representation of two countries distanced by selfish egos now allies for what is worth fighting for.
Doing anything to this song is amazing. Making a sandwich, sweeping the floor, running a virus scan. Hell, if you fuck your girlfriend to this song...use your imaginations.
"Oh snap light the Beacon! light the Beacon!" .... "Crap we're out of flint. Dammit! do you have any gravel?" .... "Just one block" ... "well we'll have to keep digging it till it gives us one"
i hate pointing out flaws in movies tht i love but how do the beacons on the mountain tops get li?? r ppl living up there w/ the only purpose of lighting the beacon??
@Mariii2771 well since the telefon isn't invented in their time, this is their only means of communication with rohan. I can only guess that those people on the mountains lighting the beacons chose to serve their kingdom this way.. so is it really that strange?
Does anyone else think of the logistics involved in maintaining a line of beacons across a huge mountain range with what is little better than iron age technology?
How do they supply those guys up there?(Some of them must be several hundred miles from Gondor.) How long is a tour of duty? Will they light in extreme weather conditions? Are all the beacons on Gondorian territory? And if not, are they manned by Gondorians or by men from those countries?
@ishtarg8 You have a hut on the mountain. You have a weapon to kill animals. People today are just plain helpless. People used to live for months on the mountains herding the sheep during summer. This was common only a 100 years ago.
Alright, but that raises other questions. In that kind of terrain, parties of two are the minimum that should really move around together. So you need to man the station with at least three. How hard is it to hunt for three people , in that kind of rocky, inhospitable country? Everything they eat is going to have to come from lower down. They could be gone a while. Which means it's probably smart to have two at the beacon hut, as well.
Also, think about your line, "in the summer". These dudes have to be there all the time. Agreed, they can hunt in summertime, but what do they do if they're snowed in for five months?
Plus there's clearly no fail safe to ensure the signal they see is properly authorised. That seems a bit short sighted. They could be mustering the Rohirrim because someone slipped and accidentally lit the first beacon.
"I wonder how did studio get the idea of this scene"
It was in the book.
"wanna know how do the people in charge of the beacons make a living, isolated on the lonely peaks"
They would have to be supplied and resupplied by their kingdoms. But, seriously, maintaining that system for even a year, much more centuries, in all weather would be virtually impossible from a survival point of view, so don't ask so many questions.
@ChristophDollis Well I meant the idea of visual effects, camera moves etc.Companied with splended symphony, sweeping over mountains and sea-like clouds, awesome and jawdropping.
Yeah I was kidding too when I asked.:P But frankly I just broused thru the books so I must have missed many details cuz I'm Chinese and I don't think the Chinese version very good, while on the other hand Tolkien's vocabulary is a little too difficult for me...I'm far more familiar with movies than books though.
What if something like this appeared throughout the world: Northern Spain, Portugual, Bosnia, Rawanda, France, Japan, Equador.. This is what the world needs to communicate. So much more epic than our modern era of cell phones!
If the beacons weren't lit for like flipping years wouldn't the people at the becons be dead or not paying attention to a tiny blip in the distance
