I Love John Mayer but for a while there he wasnt feeling it and it sorta looks like something he was just thrown into without having a choice. It did get a little better at around the 8 minute mark.
Gets good around 7:49 they just had to have to understand that you can't just play guitar to any single loop with it sounding good. It needs to move melodically a LITTLE bit for it to harmonize.
They looked happy with the result. This is what music is about. :)
@PrincessShittyBottom you saying no offence is you wanting to make yourself feel better about saying this sucks. Either stand behind what you say or don't say it at all

@LaPerssonandro If you mean the one on his screen at 9:30, that would be Steve Miller Band - Fly Like An Eagle. But the one playing is Hall & Oates - I Can't Go For That.
Check out Just Blaze hitting all those buttons! Woah he musta been doing that for years, it must've taken him so much effort to learn how to push buttons so well. I've been playing guitar for like 6 years and John Mayer is one of my main influences, but after seeing this, I want to push buttons for the rest of my life! Screw music knowledge, screw awesome guitar tones, screw emotional expression, pushing buttons is my calling!
lighten up man, it's jus another type of music, its cool if you can dig it, its a mix of rhythm and melody... i've been playin the guitar for 8 years and JM tone searching is great and all but there's a ton of different music... appreciate it, dont hate on it
I meant to come on here and explain that I was joking about and also it's just not my sorta style. I admit my rant was a bit extreme but I'd had a few jars at the time (personal note, don't go on YouTube drunk) and it sorta just happened. Fair play to that other guy though, it was a chilla beat.
@HarteMusic: How terribly lamentable you are, sir. Let's push aside the rules that the plethora of musical snobs adhere to and indulge from a different perspective:
1. Musical knowledge, as useful as it may be, is not a necessity.
2. Emotional expression comes from the soul, and translates through whatever entity you use, be it electronic or organic.
@TidesCollide Your control of the English langauge puts me at your beckoned call. Much apologies for offending, please read my reply to Kimojim12's comment
@HarteMusic: That said, If I'm accusing you wrongly, it's because the hallmarks of hostility are couched in the language you're using. It's the haughty, dismissive attitude and your clinical tone of eviscerating sarcasm, completely devoid of any empathy, what-so-ever.
@HarteMusic I've been playing guitar for 9 years and Mayer is my main influence. But you know what? Kanye West is just as much a musical influence on me. So is Just Blaze as a producer. Just because Blaze and Kanye make their music electronically doesn't mean there's no knowledge or emotional expression involved. There is just as much, and a lot of it is less phony than with guitar-based music, where you can bend notes and make faces. Tones? they spend hours just finding the right kick drum.
@HarteMusic Furthermore, it isn't all pushing buttons. Making electronic music is a real composition process, just as with writing regular tunes. Sampling other artist's tunes is an art of taste and creativity, almost an equivalent to allusions in literature: Taking a song with a certain element and turning it into something completely different (See Kanye+Just Blaze's "Touch The Sky"). Hip-hop production is just as legitimate a music form as any guitar-based music.

@1964aphrodite yeah, it's actually an 8 string guitar which is basicaly a regular guitar with 2 bass strings added. he wrote "stitched up" on one of these.

My apologies. I jest. I usually write them to unnerve, uspet, and for ludicrous purposes and value. Half of what I say is meaningless. I don't mean most of what I say.
I wouldn't say that. I'm 15 and I'm a huge fan of John Mayer, SRV, Alicia Keys, Jimi Hendrix... and even more commercial stuff like Paramore. Let's face it, the girl has the best pair of lungs you've heard in a while.
That's not an 8 string bass. It's a Novax guitar/bass combo. Charlie Hunter plays one (including on Mayer's "In Repair"). 3 bass strings and 5 guitar strings.
I feel sorry for people who listen to the radio. You will never hear anything good come out of it ever. You will never hear Four Tet, Cex, Aphex Twin, Cinematic Orchestra, Nujabes, Roots of Orchis, the Notwist, on the radio. Even Radiohead barely comes on the radio.
John Mayer is one of the few true artists left. Literally 90% or more of music is processed garbage. And then you have your talents like Mayer, Alicia Keys and such who are true talented musicians who are masters of their instrument and write amazing music. The huge majority of artists out there are not on this guys level and its a fact.
I agree but electro music is nice to! Too much people are not open enough to love what have been made in the past I think. Its a closed mind effect due to the ethic maybe.. sorry for my english I'm french, hehe

Haha, what a bunch of jiberish. Music has EVOLVED over the last 50 years and will continue to do so. Music today is no better or worse than it was 50 years ago. Sure, there is a LOT of shit. What you will hear on television is some of the worst music ever created. I kid you not that when I go out into my neighborhood, I meet people who have never heard a musical instrument before.
Well thats fair, and I agree. However, anyone who likes real, legit music knows that the radio and tv are not where its found. I can go to Walmart to buy all my clothes - but I don't. Just because the radio and tv provide music, doesn't mean thats where you should be getting it from. And on the flip side, a lot of that pop music people say is crap is really quite brilliant. The producers who work with Britney, Christina, PCD and all those bands are world class. They know their shit.
WOW fucking hell I'm sick of this generational-bitching shit. Music changes, lets just accept that. Fuck we all know what musical instruments are, and just maybe computers are a new form of instrument, which just require new and different skills.

I cant explain why hes comming off as different. I guess I can say that Its just lately he seems more Hollywood than New York if that makes since.
Why is it that any guitarist with talent is now being put in one of two Brackets (Hendrix or SRV). Don't most people play in a likeness of at least someone they consider an influence?
DJ'ing is harder than it looks and for someone to just write it off all together shows a lot of musical ignorance.
It is also a Jam session its not like its become a "Type" of music and there are plenty of styles of music still going.
Cheer up fella.... Maybe your sound can change the world. Be about it I guess.
this is sweet, a great collab, for those saying rehearsal is needed and they dont work well together...its a session not a gig. meaning they are just free styling this. this is directed towards open minded ppl who listen to all kinds of music. i mean come on not everyone even knows what alife is, let alone they put mayer and blaze together for a session. that scares the closed minded individual. they work fine together it doesnt matter the style of artists, just the fact that they are different
They don´t work well just because John mayer is a blues guitarist...and although he is very good, he is trapped in the pentatonic scale....If I were improvising over that beat I would have used a beebop scale, or something chromatic for an acid jazz kind of feel
This is where knowing a little jazz fusion helps a lot. Straight blues (minor pentatonics) doesn't fit here; however, a lot of the tasteful rhythmic stuff john pulls out does. If used correctly, triads and stacked 4ths would also work.

Just Blaze looks like a little kid!

Be about it I guess.

this is sweet, a great collab, for those saying rehearsal is needed and they dont work well together...its a session not a gig. meaning they are just free styling this. this is directed towards open minded ppl who listen to all kinds of music. i mean come on not everyone even knows what alife is, let alone they put mayer and blaze together for a session. that scares the closed minded individual. they work fine together it doesnt matter the style of artists, just the fact that they are different

okay i am a guitar playa....i want to have like a guitar backtrack like this turntable sound...someone know where to find?
rocknrollrocco91 2 years ago 2
I'd say just google "guitar backing tracks" or something. There are billions off them, you're sure to find something similar.

try youtube. look for 'instrumental', or simply 'backing track' there are a couple of good one on here.

that's probably the best way to put it.
just blaze is a serious dj.
this guy is a serious guitarist.
but together they just dont work well.....they look like they need to rehearse it more, or maybe the whole concept just dont work.
10eleven 2 years ago
They don´t work well just because John mayer is a blues guitarist...and although he is very good, he is trapped in the pentatonic scale....If I were improvising over that beat I would have used a beebop scale, or something chromatic for an acid jazz kind of feel
marcometalico 2 years ago
he maybe using penatonic scale here but ive heard mayer use phrygian riff and incorporate into his style of music thats wow to me.

This is where knowing a little jazz fusion helps a lot. Straight blues (minor pentatonics) doesn't fit here; however, a lot of the tasteful rhythmic stuff john pulls out does. If used correctly, triads and stacked 4ths would also work.
