  • what the fuck is that guitar??

  • Does anyone know the track playing at the 8:00 min mark? so good!

  • @usernameraba I Can't Go For That - Hall and Oates

  • that's some mean ass rhythm guitar playing right thur!!

  • love the 'i wish' moment :D John is so talented, wish i could be that good one day

  • 1:34 is the beginning of the sickest breakdown and what i think is the best blend for their worlds, as far as that kinda play along to a dj

  • Crowd is so ungrateful. If I was there I'd be right upfront, looking intensely at what this man's fingers were doing.

  • I Love John Mayer but for a while there he wasnt feeling it and it sorta looks like something he was just thrown into without having a choice. It did get a little better at around the 8 minute mark.

  • Gets good around 7:49 they just had to have to understand that you can't just play guitar to any single loop with it sounding good. It needs to move melodically a LITTLE bit for it to harmonize.

They looked happy with the result. This is what music is about. :)

  • This kind of sucks.

    (No offence)

  • @PrincessShittyBottom you saying no offence is you wanting to make yourself feel better about saying this sucks. Either stand behind what you say or don't say it at all

  • @Gupps0123456 Well said.

  • FUNKY.

  • how can those "trendy" fucks not stop swiggin their fuckin drinks to appreciate this beautiful pure funky amazingness hes pulling out of the music ether just cause

  • that was kind of a trainwreck. sorry. i appreciate the effort tho mayer

  • hahaha mayers trying to do the charlie hunter face. Or hes struggling with the 8 string, as I imagine it must feel forgein to him.

  • @yanis3 i imagine he can make whatever the fuck face he wants because he's john mayer

  • What do you call that bass+guitar instrument?

  • Mayer channeling some James Blood Ulmer vibes!

  • Check out Just Blaze hitting all those buttons! Woah he musta been doing that for years, it must've taken him so much effort to learn how to push buttons so well. I've been playing guitar for like 6 years and John Mayer is one of my main influences, but after seeing this, I want to push buttons for the rest of my life! Screw music knowledge, screw awesome guitar tones, screw emotional expression, pushing buttons is my calling!

  • @HarteMusic

lighten up man, it's jus another type of music, its cool if you can dig it, its a mix of rhythm and melody... i've been playin the guitar for 8 years and JM tone searching is great and all but there's a ton of different music... appreciate it, dont hate on it

  • @Kimojim12

I meant to come on here and explain that I was joking about and also it's just not my sorta style. I admit my rant was a bit extreme but I'd had a few jars at the time (personal note, don't go on YouTube drunk) and it sorta just happened. Fair play to that other guy though, it was a chilla beat.

  • @HarteMusic: How terribly lamentable you are, sir. Let's push aside the rules that the plethora of musical snobs adhere to and indulge from a different perspective:

    1. Musical knowledge, as useful as it may be, is not a necessity.

    2. Emotional expression comes from the soul, and translates through whatever entity you use, be it electronic or organic.

  • @TidesCollide Your control of the English langauge puts me at your beckoned call. Much apologies for offending, please read my reply to Kimojim12's comment

  • @HarteMusic: That said, If I'm accusing you wrongly, it's because the hallmarks of hostility are couched in the language you're using. It's the haughty, dismissive attitude and your clinical tone of eviscerating sarcasm, completely devoid of any empathy, what-so-ever.

  • @HarteMusic I've been playing guitar for 9 years and Mayer is my main influence. But you know what? Kanye West is just as much a musical influence on me. So is Just Blaze as a producer. Just because Blaze and Kanye make their music electronically doesn't mean there's no knowledge or emotional expression involved. There is just as much, and a lot of it is less phony than with guitar-based music, where you can bend notes and make faces. Tones? they spend hours just finding the right kick drum.

  • @HarteMusic Furthermore, it isn't all pushing buttons. Making electronic music is a real composition process, just as with writing regular tunes. Sampling other artist's tunes is an art of taste and creativity, almost an equivalent to allusions in literature: Taking a song with a certain element and turning it into something completely different (See Kanye+Just Blaze's "Touch The Sky"). Hip-hop production is just as legitimate a music form as any guitar-based music.

  • ITS A FUCKIN NOVAX 8-STRING, FOR FUCK SAKE IT'S BEEN SAID A GAZILLION TIMES IN THE COMMENTS! (Probably 500 out of the 662 comments is about that damn guitar)

God damnit someone thumb up a comment with someone stating the name of the guitar, or at least try and go back in the comments people!

    Wonderful music by the way

  • @oliverandm hahahahahahahaha

  • the turntables are kinda annoying but john mayers killin it

  • What type of guitar is this???

  • @KLAUSNUTZ I presume you're talking about the Novax 8-String guitar. Check out Charlie Hunter if you dig the guitar.

  • fuck that lame ass crowd

  • In 2003, Mayer released a live CD and DVD of a concert in Birmingham, Alabama entitled, Any Given Thursday.

  • lol@ top rated comments, so on point... I was actually talking to my dad about how I wish I had grown up in his generation where ppl played music instead of just yelled on top of some computer generated song about rims, fat booties and money

  • what's the name of the song that starts at 0:11?

  • "cavern" by liquid liquid.

but it's probably best known as the main hook from grandmaster flash's "white lines."

  • thank you

  • If you pause te video at the time 04:04 you can count the 9 strings on his guitar and other parts you can see that he's got more of that apart guitars

  • i think the guitar just has added bass strings.

    rest sounds normal.

  • Look up charlie hunter, that weird guitar is his signature model.

  • Actually there are 8 strings...

  • @1964aphrodite yeah, it's actually an 8 string guitar which is basicaly a regular guitar with 2 bass strings added. he wrote "stitched up" on one of these.

  • @ 7.49, what is the name of this song?

  • @0126578 Hall and Oates; I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)

  • Ah thx :)

  • There is no name of this music collaboration there are several songs mix an A/Life session I would say and well done too

  • the people in the audience don't care what the hell is going on, this must have been a free event

  • Lord i want his Strat.

  • Damn... And then in the middle of that heavy jam he incorporates Stevie Wonder! :'D

  • whats the song that starts around 4:25?

  • The song that starts at 4:25 is Galaxy by War

  • @zechs77 sweet thanks.

  • The new generation growing up does not know what a musical instrument sounds like.

  • Unrealistic view on the future.

  • Just curious, PrincessShittyBottom, did you previously spam under the username "AnonymousWhitePerson"?

  • Why yes, wherefore and how did you guess?

  • Your comments are very similar. Generally intelligently worded (a rarity on youtube), but quite ridiculous and/or disgusting in content. Either that, or truths portrayed in some ludicrous manner.

I do get a laugh out a some. Carry on.

  • My apologies. I jest. I usually write them to unnerve, uspet, and for ludicrous purposes and value. Half of what I say is meaningless. I don't mean most of what I say.

  • your username is hilarious lol :D

  • I wouldn't say that. I'm 15 and I'm a huge fan of John Mayer, SRV, Alicia Keys, Jimi Hendrix... and even more commercial stuff like Paramore. Let's face it, the girl has the best pair of lungs you've heard in a while.

  • Damn straight. I hear ya.

  • That's not an 8 string bass. It's a Novax guitar/bass combo. Charlie Hunter plays one (including on Mayer's "In Repair"). 3 bass strings and 5 guitar strings.

  • 3:50 holy crap, he's playing an 8-string bass!!!

  • I feel sorry for people who listen to the radio. You will never hear anything good come out of it ever. You will never hear Four Tet, Cex, Aphex Twin, Cinematic Orchestra, Nujabes, Roots of Orchis, the Notwist, on the radio. Even Radiohead barely comes on the radio.

  • That is somewhat ironic because John Mayer gets loads of airtime on the radio

  • John Mayer is one of the few true artists left. Literally 90% or more of music is processed garbage. And then you have your talents like Mayer, Alicia Keys and such who are true talented musicians who are masters of their instrument and write amazing music. The huge majority of artists out there are not on this guys level and its a fact.

  • I agree but electro music is nice to! Too much people are not open enough to love what have been made in the past I think. Its a closed mind effect due to the ethic maybe.. sorry for my english I'm french, hehe

  • people of present generation just wants to listen to niggas rap it out..and some gay jonas brothers songs..

    they dont appreciate deeper music..

  • @weward i agree

  • @weward Like the Roots. Mmmmm. and, of course, John.

  • The problem with this present generation is that most people in it have never actually heard musical instruments before.

  • so true man....at my painting job i was listening to a radio station playing srv. kids i was working with turned it off, called it gay and total shit.. then put in a cd and played a song that said "i want my money, i need, i need, i need cash, i want my money, i need, i need, i need cash" yes those were the accual lyrics...i was so disgusted.

  • It is a product of being conditioned to 50 years of garbage, of a garbage culture that displaced all notions of beauty. The banking elite want a public that loves their useless private money and mindless entertainment and cannot formulate opinons. Thus the people have become stupid animals with no discretion over what is good or what is bad except that which is molded by popular consensus or handed to them by their masters. The only 'truth' is that which is popularly believed.

  • Haha, what a bunch of jiberish. Music has EVOLVED over the last 50 years and will continue to do so. Music today is no better or worse than it was 50 years ago. Sure, there is a LOT of shit. But go back and look at the charts in the 60s. There was JUST as much shit. What makes me laugh is people who say music today sucks. Dont you think there are MUSICIANS out there today who feel the same way? Trust me, if you know where to look our generation has some of the most creative music of all time

  • Of course, there is good music. But the good music is never promoted in any way whatsoever. Good music is being created all the time. You'll just never hear it now on the radio or on television. What you will hear on television is some of the worst music ever created. I kid you not that when I go out into my neighborhood, I meet people who have never heard a musical instrument before.

  • Well thats fair, and I agree. However, anyone who likes real, legit music knows that the radio and tv are not where its found. I can go to Walmart to buy all my clothes - but I don't. Just because the radio and tv provide music, doesn't mean thats where you should be getting it from. And on the flip side, a lot of that pop music people say is crap is really quite brilliant. The producers who work with Britney, Christina, PCD and all those bands are world class. They know their shit.

  • @PrincessShittyBottom they've heard them, they just have no idea what they are.

  • @PrincessShittyBottom no, people of this generation can't appreciate music without musical instruments in it

  • WOW fucking hell I'm sick of this generational-bitching shit. Music changes, lets just accept that. Fuck we all know what musical instruments are, and just maybe computers are a new form of instrument, which just require new and different skills.

As one this 'problematic new generation' I find it offensive that people generalize about our apparent lack of musical knowledge. We respect and admire the music pioneered by you guys in the past, how about some respect for the new techniques of today?

  • @harmonicasman3 friday fridayy gotta get down on fridayy

  • @alienblob21 haha I guess there are exceptions....

  • @PrincessShittyBottom You base ur statment on what?

  • @klasse2bub

I base this statement on my neighborhood,

  • john mayer is my idol

he is why i play guitar XD

  • hahaha oh john is such a Charlie Hunter fan, 4:20.. thats a 8 string guitar. In fact, the same one Charlie Hunter plays. kudos for learning it.

  • what's that crazy guitaR? that look like bass but smaller and sound like fender with humbucker, anyway it look so weired and crazy

  • I am saying this with the warmest feelings for John...he is a dork...and that is such an endearing thing about him. He is funny and very talented. He isn't a jerk, but he gets hounded a lot so he does get sarcastic. It's his humor. Please don't judge him badly for it.

  • sweet shoes btw

  • John isn't who he useed to be, sorta tell that from intrviews but I love him adn his music anyways...

He just seemed cooler whn he was like this hidden gem, more down to earth..But its cool as long as he keeps making good music it doesnt matter.

  • i dont think hes changed all that much, i think people often mistake him just being goofy and a little out there for arrogance

  • nahh I think his humor is HILARIOUS EVEN THO PPL THINK HES BEING A DOUCHE- HES NOT. And as far as him being arrogant, hes one of todays greatest musicians so if he wants to be arrogant let him lol . I cant explain why hes comming off as different. I guess I can say that Its just lately he seems more Hollywood than New York if that makes since.

  • haha yea i know what your saying not sure if i completely agree but i can see where ur comin from

  • yeah. I hope Im not judging him, I mean really. Im not trying to. He just seems different. Im not tring to bash him/pull him down. Im just saying lol

  • haha yea

  • the last one was awesome!

  • what a bullshit crowd

  • Yeah, the audience sucks ass. Stupid kids have never heard musical instruments before.

  • Just Blaze looks like a little kid!

  • Why is it that any guitarist with talent is now being put in one of two Brackets (Hendrix or SRV). Don't most people play in a likeness of at least someone they consider an influence?

DJ'ing is harder than it looks and for someone to just write it off all together shows a lot of musical ignorance.

It is also a Jam session its not like its become a "Type" of music and there are plenty of styles of music still going.

Cheer up fella.... Maybe your sound can change the world. Be about it I guess.

  • hell yeah, john!!!

  • I like the part off 1.53

    Nice rittem

  • this is sweet, a great collab, for those saying rehearsal is needed and they dont work well together...its a session not a gig. meaning they are just free styling this. this is directed towards open minded ppl who listen to all kinds of music. i mean come on not everyone even knows what alife is, let alone they put mayer and blaze together for a session. that scares the closed minded individual. they work fine together it doesnt matter the style of artists, just the fact that they are different

  • okay i am a guitar playa....i want to have like a guitar backtrack like this turntable sound...someone know where to find?

  • I'd say just google "guitar backing tracks" or something. There are billions off them, you're sure to find something similar.

  • try youtube. look for 'instrumental', or simply 'backing track' there are a couple of good one on here.

  • Blaze and Mayer Tore it up!!! I cant go for that(NO CAN DO) was on FIIIRRREEE!!!!

  • well everyone is saying how it sucks.. but i like it...

    haha

  • your a fucking idiot.

  • whats the riff at 1:47????

  • What is the song at 9:30

  • nevermind.

i can't go for that (no can do) by hall & oates

  • Breakin out the novax. Niicceee

  • SO time lagged

  • nOT HAPPEING.

  • no the DJ isnt happening, johns playing what he can with this shitty beat

  • love his novax charlie hunter guitar

  • Sounds pretty awkward.

  • that's probably the best way to put it.

just blaze is a serious dj.

this guy is a serious guitarist.

but together they just dont work well.....they look like they need to rehearse it more, or maybe the whole concept just dont work.

  • They don´t work well just because John mayer is a blues guitarist...and although he is very good, he is trapped in the pentatonic scale....If I were improvising over that beat I would have used a beebop scale, or something chromatic for an acid jazz kind of feel

  • he maybe using penatonic scale here but ive heard mayer use phrygian riff and incorporate into his style of music thats wow to me.

  • mnmmmmmm JUICEY STUUUFFFF :D

  • yehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • That 2nd guitar looks like its half bass half guitar that's fucking legit dude

  • thats exactly what it is! Check out Charlie Hunter vids if you wanna see someone really own an 8 string

  • i see a fulltone fulldrive there!

GOD DAMN THIS SHIT IS FUCKING SICK

    SICK AS GROOVE

  • Some of you are being really lame... Just appreciate the music. It's delicious stuff.

  • what song is at 9:58 , after SUNRISE of SIMPLY RED

  • it is not simply red, its hall and oates

  • at 4:50

    wtf?

    what kinda guitar is that?

  • It's a custom 7 or 8 string novak like charlie hunter plays

  • It looks like a Conklin to me.

  • THE BLACK ONE

  • LOL, they are gonna sell it soon!

  • I love JM... but this is soooo ugly...

  • Hey, how about bringing the press only after someone creates something significant?

    Talk about hype.

  • great eh!

  • HAHA! sounds like john cant keep the blues out

  • I hate seeing DJ's not using vinyl

  • WOW! sweet!

  • John has the life. Yes

  • This is where knowing a little jazz fusion helps a lot. Straight blues (minor pentatonics) doesn't fit here; however, a lot of the tasteful rhythmic stuff john pulls out does. If used correctly, triads and stacked 4ths would also work.
