When my mother passed away from cancer suddenly at the age of 48, all I did was listen to the recording of The Year of Magical Thinking. How strange it seems right now, to find solace in someone else’s pain. I guess I found in Joan some solid proof that it can be survived. That you can lose what’s most dear to you, and that you still survive. I listened to the book, on repeat for 9 months, and in that time I lost about 135 lb., became sort of a skeleton. But I survived (ambiguous word) it.
