I think people who grew up speaking english tend to try to interpret everything that they hear into an english word when they hear it, as someone who grew up speaking French would interpret something into French when they heard it. That's why you sometimes get weird phrases in languages like "My neck of the woods." This comes from the german Mein Eck (meaning my corner) of the woods, but someone who didn't speak german would hear it as my neck.
