The movie is very good. Not sure why so many people didn't like it. I watched it on my PS3 blu-ray. It's so colorful!

from what i saw, it's abt the emperor maintaining appearances..upkeeping the "good example" that his family should be setting for the rest of the country... Lots of underlying symbols like the regularity with which time is announced, several repeated sequences, to show how orderly the palace is. This is juxtaposed with the "shadows" in the palace -the two affairs, the youngest son's thirst for power etc. to show that amidst the regularity, there's chaos in the palace.

Thought zhangyimou did a great job with the symbols (my fave was the circle and square on the terrace representing "天圆地方"- the natural order) but went a little overboard with the female costumes.

n 1997 a girl called lauren was walikng in a forest and then a she just dissapeared no one ever found her untill 2000 when a yoing girl called Mary found her body and markings on her chest saying: I wasnt pretty enough" and now you have read this she will appear in your mirror saying your not pretty enough and kill you. by the way the girl called mary died shortly after.
