This music from Vangelis was perfect for this video. I admire MIR space station program so much, but I can't avoid feel me sad about his destruction, even if you tell me that it was necessary.
Why'd they destroy it, strap a couple rockets on it, send it to orbit Mars, boom problem solved then Russia goes down in history for having a Mars space station :P
@Augustow09 ummm who said you need to send people and supplies to it? It would be rather cheap to send it there with and few rocket engines while keeping enough fuel to do burns to keep it in orbit for years, maybe 3 times the price then just blowing the fuck outta it in the atmosphere, but still, that's a small amount to pay to go down in history as "The first dudes to have a space station around Mars."
@Augustow09 well, there are growing fears that if the US defaults its debts, they might have to give all control of the ISS to the Russians or completely cut of military pay, which would lead too a collapse similar to what happened to the USSR in 1991.
@harris3693 America is dying anyway with all the money the government is spending. Next thing you know California, Texas, Nevada, and New Mexico will be part of Mexico.
@Augustow09 True, like no american will ever say that someone else is better than them, they must always destroy great feats and boast that they are great, like the F-22's see-lock-launch technology, which was actually on the MiG-25, 28 years before!! Like Americans are great with cars, but don't accept that fact!!! As many outside the USA say, "A nation with no human values ain't a nation, but a region".
@nekbiodieselworks way too expensive - to disassemble a space station store it in a space shuttle and land it to be reassembled. Besides, even a space shuttle couldn't take it all back home in one go, it would have to be numerous trips there and back. WAY too expensive.
It is. I've heard rumors that it was even political posturing that killed it; a private company was actually formed to take over the station but they were stonewalled from getting important parts they needed to service the station.
Oh well. The ISS actually features modules designed for Mir 2, combined with elements designed for "Space Station Freedom". I think bolting it together with the American's station is pretty appropriate considering the meaning of the name Mir.
Dont know answer for previous, but when Skylab de orbited it could hardly be described as burned up well. It came crashing down on to dry land in Western Australia. Luckily no one was in the way. Im told you can go to the site where it impacted and still see the crater it made.
At least it landed in water. When the NASA Skylab re entered it came crashing down on dry land in western australia. lucky no one was in the way as it was far from being burned up completely. Im told if you go to the spot now you can still see the crater it created.
MIR was amazing and would still have continued to function for many years but the political atmosphere and the new technology coming up pretty much spelled the end of it
The Russian government decided to dunk it and make the MIR-2 or ISS it's prime project from then on since keeping MIR up would mean they have two space stations to supply and people were not ready for that
@Silmacar I agree your opinion. Mir Space Station was a first space station bulid from few modules. I can't believe it has got a 5 science modules! If it would stay on orbit by next 6 years, maybe some scientists from Poland would go there. That's too bad that some countries hasn't got a chance to send their citizens to space station like Mir.
Lies! This is what they want you to believe, people! Believe it not. Mir was seized by the aliens so that they can learn about our weaknesses. The covert aliens in our governments tried to cover it up, but they can't cover up the truth forever! Unite against the alien threat and we will defeat them!
Mir became obsolete and it was past its "expiration date" anyway. Reparing it whitout the help of NASA and others would be to expensive for russia. So it was deliberately de-orbited by the russians.

@Shuttheheckup735 not that easy, would take years for the station to make it to Mars and years to send people/Supplies to Mars.

the Russians are already planning for MIR2. when the ISS has to be deactivated in 2016 the Russian components will be reused to help build MIR2.
put simply, you have to reuse as much as you can in space.
because its bloody expensive to put anything up there to begin with.

Mir became obsolete and it was past its "expiration date" anyway. Reparing it whitout the help of NASA and others would be to expensive for russia. So it was deliberately de-orbited by the russians.

It is funny that private interests want to buy this 15-year-old space station after the Russians verified the deorbit of the Mir.

Because we fired its motors and put it on the proper trajectory to hit the atmosphere and burn up. MIR was old and dusty:)
