My Gt Gt Grandmother, Catherine Nicholson 1826 from Kilmuir, Skye, Scotland.
She wrote the An Eriskay Love Lilt!
Unfortunately for Catherine, a Mrs Kennedy Fraser was touring Scotland gathering up songs, laments, lilts and ballads from the locals. Mrs Kennedy Fraser persuaded Catherine to signing up the rights with the promise of some later financial reward. The rewards never came and the lilt is now attributed to Kenedy Fraser.
@Paddylennoxsurely , this is a traditional song. It is a hebredian work song, you can tell from the rhythm. No one "wrote" it, unless you mean the English lyric. They may have collected it.As Burns collected the tunes for his songs and wrote the lyrics. As a work song, it should be sung much faster, regardless of the sentiment of the lyric. It is marked "Andante", in my copy. A lot of folk singing it here must be pretty slow walkers. They would nae get very much work done at that speed
lol it kinda annoys me when people don't appreciate the song without piano accompiament. i mean im into rock music and stuff like that but this song is beautful without a backing instrument :) xx
Catherine Nicholson was also my Gt. Gt. Grandmother and I have heard this same story after having my family-tree traced...

I know it sounds like a shaggy dog story, but it is true. I have the School of Scottish Studies helping out.

Lovely voice. Piano accompiament would make it more lovely.

i am singing this song at the moment and it is classed as a 'folk song' at grade six, so you are not allowed accompiament :) x
