The part that hurts the most is, you are right trent... everyone does go away in the end. I started to think about the people I used to call my friends etc. They were just a small segment of my life. <3 kudos NIN you are fucking awesome.
@05hipkinja I'm sorry your right, I'll do the MATHS. I just over looked it because I didn't do the MATHS correctly my bad bro. Maybe you can teach me how to do the MATHS properly sometime, that would be cool.
I think both NIN and Johnny's versions are incredably powerful and emotional, but in very different ways. Johnny's definatinitly got more attention considering what he had gone through prior to him covering it, and just how fitting the lyrics were to his experience, and that he passed away only a year after recording it.
Honestly Johnny Cash's cover doesn't come close to comparing with the raw emotion that I feel from NIN's version, and therefore doesn't even come close to how much better NIN's version is.
Wow i only just learnt NIN were the first to perform this sone, i prefer J.C version the passion he sings it with. But big ups to these guys for creating such a deep song
I love Johnny' music and charisma but I heard this version first and I still like this one more but I do like both and hey I always thought Trent was a goof ball but he wrote some good music.
The amount of idiots that think this is a cover. THIS IS THE ORIGINAL. Johnny Cash covered this version. Very well I may add. Both versions are awesome.
after listening to a few versions... I don't think i'll listen to this version again... but I must say it gives an entirely different way of interpreting the lyrics.
@deelennondee its not a rip off of johnny cash u idiot, know what ur talking about before u speak, johnny cash did a cover of this song which is like one of the hugest honors that someone could get in the music business, i love both versions in my opinion
this version's in my opinions better, sends shivers down my spine so beautifull and emotional, and i hate nin think nearly all trents music sounds awfull but even i can appreicate this :)
i like both versions, but cash really brings this song to life. i get chills when i watch the cash version but i get nothing watching this or the original video by nin.
the thing i hate about this version he is always whispering, just because its a sad song, doesnt mean you have whisper the damn thing, its still good just hate the lack of expression
Johnny's version is way better, but someone had to write the song. I dont think that Johnny would have covered it had he not liked it. And Im sure that Trent had great respect for Johnny's version as well
i dont get people who argue over "US ARGUING" ofcourse we should argue over who is the best. thats what the entire music industry is built on. if there was no comparing how would we acknowledge what our favourite songs are...! its so simple. SO FUCK IT! LETS ARGUE AWAY!!!!!! ignore the dicks who have the top comments they only said that to get likes anyway!
@WereNotFamousAnymore music isn't about the industry, it's about the music. but if you want to listen to music just because some soulless multinational company tells you to, and not because you want to appreciate a form of art, then go ahead.

Okay, there are a lot of stupid comment threads on YouTube, but the idiotic bickering that occurs on both versions of "Hurt" is by far the worst. I'm refraining from scrolling down at all on this song from now on.
*For those who say NIN sucks and J.C rules...I admit J.C's version was mindblowing, but dont trash NIN-without them J.C wouldnt have sung hurt because it wouldnt have existed -_-*
@X0jenniferdemise0X One can find this (original) version disappointing. Even a fanatic fan (!). And especially so after hearing Johnny Cash. (Yes.) Who would still have sung cool, great songs if this one here had never existed.
But this here is an alternative vision, which one should consider with an open mind.
@snacksupreme while i love the johnny cash version, this is great too. i think we can agree that Johnny Cash didn't think it was so bad. I mean... he covered it
@snacksupreme And you my friend, are majorly overreacting. Rapists, murderers, are the ''Scum of the earth'' as you put it. Not people that prefer the NIN cover to the original.
Why bicker over which version is better.Music like all art is open for interpretation and differing of opinions.Doesn't mean one is better than the other.I'm sure Trent would be flattered that Johnny Cash deemed this song worthy of covering.Just listen and enjoy!!
Most of you retards have it backwards. This song was written by JOHNNY CASH! Trent asked for permission to sing it as he and Cash manned the gloryholes down at Fisty McFisterson's Gay Bath House and Fisting Emporium. Yes its gay related music but who cares? Just enjoy.
It just sounds like it was made for Cash, it just fits perfectly with him, the context, everything, it all combines into this extremely powerful piece that makes anyone sniffle like a little girl.
And even if you didn't exactly like NIN's original version you'll find new appreciation for it once you listen to that harrowing piece of slaughter (that's been going around the radio recently, in my country at least) sung by some chick I cannot be bothered to find the name of.
Gosh, this is like Martin and Lewis, or Lennon and MacCartney all over again. Let's all try to show a little more respect please. By the way Peter Murphy also does a wonderfull version and actually performed with Trent. I love that version as well...so there you go. Just a matter of perspective. By the way, Cash admired Trent etc. etc...something to consider before bashing anyone.
Art is not a competition, whichever version, the original or the cover, strikes you the most personally or emotionally is entirely dependant on your own perspective. It seems extremely disrespectful to me that some would come here and try to insist Trent's "version" is somehow less "genuine." He wrote the words and the music for Chrissakes, it's obviously something he put a lot of himself into. That Johnny Cash can cover it and sound so wonderful goes to show how universal Trent's message was.
" 'Hurt' is a song written by Trent Reznor, first released on Nine Inch Nails' 1994 album The Downward Spiral. In 2002, 'Hurt' was covered by Johnny Cash to critical acclaim; it was one of Cash's final hit releases before his death. " <-- It's even on Wikipedia for all the doubters
. So everyone knows, Nine Inch Nails was the one to create this song. This is the original. Johnny Cash's version is amazing. Agreed. But this one.. that chilling, ironic, trapped, voice and music.. it's breath-taking. I have absolutely no clue why this song has so many dislikes, but this is the original; in my opinion, it's the best. No disrespect to Johnny Cash, obviously, just my opinion:). NIN Version- powerful. Ironic. Chilling.
Not bad but then again not a patch on Johnny Cash, when he sings the song it really strikes a chord...let's face it people, the song starts off "I hurt myself today to see if I still feel.." and gets progressively more depressing, now anyone who can sing that without sounding like a self-pitying emo has to get credit...
NIN is a great band.Trent is a fantastic musician.
However,Cash's version told untold amounts of pain.Through everything,J.C's life was told in his cover. It almost catches you unaware. In fact, you may not even realize it your first listen. But the lyrics take an entirely different meaning. In my opinion, more emotional.
They are both good songs from good artists.Let's agree on that.Neither Johnny nor Trent would approve of our bickering.
@redneckdipper1337 I just can't top your comment but I will add (I could be wrong here) that Trent Reznor was once quoted as saying "While I wrote Hurt Johnny Cash owns it"
I sincerely hope he did say it because there would no finer tribute to a great artist.
@redneckdipper1337 I completely respect your statement, but Trent's original renditions of the song (Both the version from The Downward Spiral, and the version from Further Down The Spiral) strike a very deep emotional chord with me. I really respect the Johnny Cash version, because you can tell it is very personal for him, but to me it does not even come close to the emotional impact that this version had on me.
Seeing Trent perform this song live even brings me to the verge of tears.
@benmcclure85 I cant agree more. When he sings "You can have it all", it is like he is trying to direct it towards somebody that broke his heart...You can hear the pain in his voice. I feel like he gives it that more personal feeling than JC did.
well, have received several negative comments, from those whom I suspect, lack in life experiences and have made assumptions about me. Was going to ignore, due to infintile content, my only retort, you'll see one day. I am in no way critisizing NNI but by the same token, know that depressing teenagers, or young adults is like shooting fish in a barrel. Please, no more juvenille comments. Thanking you in advance, respectfully Sagizanne
this version dont do it for me while johnny cash mabye good if her was youger while leona lewis version is strong and emotinal try it out for your self
that is what I meant, a lot of the suffering in youth is self inflicted, but once you pass a certain age, demons come back to haunt you and the vile things of your youth make you suffer, both physically and emotionally.
@sagizanne This statement makes me think. So you saying later as we get older things from the past come back right? I know it sounds silly to ask but I just want to be clear.
@TheViva11 Hi. Trust me, I used to laugh in my youth when my mother said I would later dwell on the experiences of my youth. A friend of mine, her father would say, you will chew your nails up to your elbows for the things you do now. When young, we dillude ourselves we know it all. My daughter, such a kid :) when I visit her posts on facebook, have to laugh at her naitivitee. It's all bee done before, but some words will never be forgotten, no matter who writes them.
@sagizanne sorry people are being jerks and not growing up, saying "you're week" and silly comments against your opinion. i am young and i know more than most of these people
i relate to this song more but that's not to say someone else wont feel differently; it depends on the type of pain you're going through, reznor's is more that of an anrgy, self-destructive, self-loathing raging pain wheras cash's is more sombre, regretful, reluctant acceptance - completely different songs
There are a lot of good songs written all the time. There only a few that fall into the GREAT category. Trent Reznor has done just that with "HURT". I love tunes that grab you and refuses to let go till the song is finished. Nine Inch Nails live performance is outstanding and only adds to the songs captivation. Johnny Cash claim his right to this song with a great arrangement. I know in my head that it's the same tune, but each has a ovation message and ending of its own. Both are great!
@sickballs95 dont hide behind the internet like a little security blanket. its okay. you can come out and say that you're jealous. as Trent has expertly shown us here, feelings need to be let out.
@sickballs95 you must be a young person, and i understand you hide through your insecurity putting down others (and fix misspellings) and let yourself accept that you are no better than anybody else until you actually show it. and making jokes about my mother does not show it no matter how bad that actually was.
@sickballs95 yes because you know me personally, right? no you dont. keep it up, you are just broadcasting how idiotic you are. its quite comedic actually, i might right a satire comedy sketch about this
though a good song, not nearly as powerful as when sung by Johnny Cash. Sorry, but did not move me while as, when I listen to Johnny Cash am brought to tears
Before all of you retards open your mouth and prove your stupidity, please take a moment to use this beautiful vast expanse of knowledge we call the internet, and look up who composed and performed this song first. Im sure there are plenty of sources that will collaborate a truth. Regardless of what you think you know, you just might be wrong. Fix it! Admit it! Move the fuck on!
I know these guys wrote this song, but it applies to johnny cash way better. And this one, no offense, is very, very creepy. I like the johnny cash version better
@ilovemydog2299 its meant to be like..haunting. and it does apply to johnny cash but it also applies very much to trent reznor(he wrote the song). so, yeah :P i guess it all depends on whether you like grunge or country better
This song embodies the feelings and emotions of anyone full of regret and who hates themselves, I have been there and cracked that way only to fight my way back stronger.
The part that hurts the most is, you are right trent... everyone does go away in the end. I started to think about the people I used to call my friends etc. They were just a small segment of my life. <3 kudos NIN you are fucking awesome.

I really respect the Johnny Cash version, because you can tell it is very personal for him, but to me it does not even come close to the emotional impact that this version had on me.
Seeing Trent perform this song live even brings me to the verge of tears.
benmcclure85 1 week ago 5
@benmcclure85 I cant agree more. When he sings "You can have it all", it is like he is trying to direct it towards somebody that broke his heart...You can hear the pain in his voice. I feel like he gives it that more personal feeling than JC did.

lol "told untold pain"... "I'll take it upon myself to have the last say on this matter..."
50 thumbs up!

@redneckdipper1337 Hell even Trent himself started to tear up when he heard it. Emotional doesn't even begin to describe it.

@redneckdipper1337 You were definitely wrong about one thing, they are both GREAT songs coming from AMAZING ARTISTS.

well, have received several negative comments, from those whom I suspect, lack in life experiences and have made assumptions about me. Was going to ignore, due to infintile content, my only retort, you'll see one day. I am in no way critisizing NNI but by the same token, know that depressing teenagers, or young adults is like shooting fish in a barrel. Please, no more juvenille comments. Thanking you in advance, respectfully Sagizanne

that is what I meant, a lot of the suffering in youth is self inflicted, but once you pass a certain age, demons come back to haunt you and the vile things of your youth make you suffer, both physically and emotionally.
sagizanne 2 weeks ago
@sagizanne This statement makes me think. So you saying later as we get older things from the past come back right? I know it sounds silly to ask but I just want to be clear.
TheViva11 2 weeks ago 2
@TheViva11 Hi. Trust me, I used to laugh in my youth when my mother said I would later dwell on the experiences of my youth. A friend of mine, her father would say, you will chew your nails up to your elbows for the things you do now. When young, we dillude ourselves we know it all. My daughter, such a kid :) when I visit her posts on facebook, have to laugh at her naitivitee. It's all bee done before, but some words will never be forgotten, no matter who writes them.

i relate to this song more but that's not to say someone else wont feel differently; it depends on the type of pain you're going through, reznor's is more that of an anrgy, self-destructive, self-loathing raging pain wheras cash's is more sombre, regretful, reluctant acceptance - completely different songs

@sickballs95 dont hide behind the internet like a little security blanket. its okay. you can come out and say that you're jealous. as Trent has expertly shown us here, feelings need to be let out.

sickballs95 2 weeks ago
@sickballs95 you must be a young person, and i understand you hide through your insecurity putting down others (and fix misspellings) and let yourself accept that you are no better than anybody else until you actually show it. and making jokes about my mother does not show it no matter how bad that actually was.

though a good song, not nearly as powerful as when sung by Johnny Cash. Sorry, but did not move me while as, when I listen to Johnny Cash am brought to tears
sagizanne 2 weeks ago 38
@sagizanne
It's about context.
Trent Reznor was going though shit when he wrote this.
Johnny Cash was an old man nearing the end of his life.
Both versions are powerful in their own way

Before all of you retards open your mouth and prove your stupidity, please take a moment to use this beautiful vast expanse of knowledge we call the internet, and look up who composed and performed this song first. Im sure there are plenty of sources that will collaborate a truth. Regardless of what you think you know, you just might be wrong. Fix it! Admit it! Move the fuck on!

I know these guys wrote this song, but it applies to johnny cash way better. And this one, no offense, is very, very creepy. I like the johnny cash version better
ilovemydog2299 3 weeks ago
@ilovemydog2299 its meant to be like..haunting. and it does apply to johnny cash but it also applies very much to trent reznor(he wrote the song). so, yeah :P i guess it all depends on whether you like grunge or country better
swimalldayfiona 3 weeks ago
@swimalldayfiona I wasn't trying to say he doesn't apply to the song, I guess we all just have our opinions. :)

This song embodies the feelings and emotions of anyone full of regret and who hates themselves, I have been there and cracked that way only to fight my way back stronger.
Gothvine 3 weeks ago
I believe NOTHING happens by accident. As much as this song fitted Trent's life, this song fitted the life of Johnny Cash EVEN MORE!
It almost seems like Trent composed this song INADVERTENTLY for Johnny!!!
