They respond much more like animals than single insects flying around when in the hive. The level of order is memorising. When swapping old swarms to a new hive, I can find the queen and put her in the new hive, then empty the tens of thousands of workers out of the mucky old hive onto the floor. Some will find the queen, signal to the others and they'll all line up in single file and walk into the new home :P AWESOME!
