one of my favorite times of year, great to see and hear all of the life waking up. It is an awesome thing to see suck protection afforded for the amphibians and reptiles of the snake road area
Dylan i want to know where you made this film. I live in kentucky and right now im working on the toad detour project which is closing off roads during the mating seasons for toads. i love all your films, keep up the good work!!!!
a symbiotic relationship, the algae produce energy and transfer it somewhat to the eggs and in the meantime the eggs provide a safe and stable place and protien for the algae to feed on, mutualism, and after the eggs are gone the algae can feed and soon it is time for another brood to be protected.
There is a place you can check. Except it's in Northern Illinois. I found a huge group of them down Rainbow Road in the long grass. What an amazing sound.

I appreciate your enthusiasm but before you put stuff like this up for all to see you should really make sure you have the knowledge to "inform others". Thinking that a globular mass of eggs in the water could even possibly be from a Zigzag (or any species in the genus Plethodon for that matter) is a HUGE lack of basic knowledge. Plethodon dorsalis has direct developement on land...that is obviously an Ambystomatid egg mass and you should have known that if you are making videos on amphibians.
yes, I know that. Go watch some of the other videos I have about Plethodons we have seen. I mentioned that several times. I only mentioned them here because they are an extremely common species in the area. Only a few minutes before hand we had shot a video of some zig-zags right next to that very same pool. So I figured it was worth mentioning them.
thebakery obviously is a master at coming up with intelligent insults...am I a douche bag too or is that stinger a little too sophisticated for you? I was simply offering Dylan some good advice that might help him become more informed if he plans on continuing this video series...he was able to be civil and take some criticism so I don't see why someone such as yourself, who obviously has nothing better to do than make retarded comments, couldn't keep their dumb fucking mouth shut.
Now im motivated to go herping lol, but im not sure how much i would find in good ol' northern jersey... the garden state? Lol, more like the garbage state :P
at. 5:34 where are those type of frogs ushally you can find in like i live in pennsylvania andi wana if you can tell me if there is any good wild life here? like reptiles
refering to the algae and the salamander eggs, do they hatch quicker because of the amount of light that the algae gather which may warm the water quicker, speeding up the incubation time.
The algae you are talking about is oophila(egg loving) ambystomatis. I had read some research paper where the algae is correlated with increase oxygen to the eggs and also provide some crypic coloration.
Yea but it was later discovered that the oxygen provided by the algae is not actually providing more than if the eggs had no algae. There was some intensive research done here in Illinois about that algae. Still nothing concrete as to why the eggs with it develop faster.
cryptic coloration is a big help in survival though.
BTW, i also know my salamanders, from the looks of the egg mass up picked up I would say is A.maculatum. The consistance of the egg mass is an easy way to tell. The eggs are definatly not dorsalis, as far as i know plethodons either are stream breeders or direct developers. Pretty sure dorsalis is direct development.
It is known that eggs that are warmer grow faster. The algae would provide more surface area to heat them up. Many species of frogs actually lay their eggs on top of each others just to make more surface area and heat up.
Just found some spotted salamander eggs in the little pond by the house the other day, I frequently see them in and out of the pond during the spring/summer months. Hopefully this year I'll see some garter snakes, havn't seen any in some time, I believe this to be the over pop of coyotes here in Ma.
good to have you back dylan, im looking forward to more of this stuff from you this year. im heading to snake road in late april, hopefully i'll have some luck just as you did
