I'm Fijian and played rugby league and union rite up till my late teens, and could run sub11 at 16i'm 32 now and i tell u this i was a lot quicker in my early 20's! But so what! Running union is better to watch than running league without a doubt. the only problem is that kicking is so overused in union it makes for a fucking boring game. (NZ super 14 teams are an exception, they are always good to watch lol)
Completely outdated example...Wigan were at the time one of the greatest rugby league teams of all time, Bath were an amateur rugby club essentially. They probably had beers and pies after training. Put Union and League together now and there is little gap in strength, fitness. As evidenced by the fact that rugby league switchers dont make a huge impact on union now, Gasnier and Sonny Bill are good union players but they aren't exactly tearing the game apart are they?
union is based to much on kicking now. where as league is based on attacking the line. League players are better with ball in hand. But yeah i agree the gap between the two has almost gone. in some respects id say league is overtaking union

Having played both codes I think Union should be renamed KICK AND CATCH. What is the point in forwards fighting for possession and as soon as the backs get it they boot it straight into the arms of the opposition? England do it all the time constantly giving it to the other side. Rugby is supposed to be a handling game, If they want to kick all the time, play football.

Calvert runs about 105m/114yds (maybe more) with the arc at the end of the run AND he was slowing down AND in boots with the ball in the middle of a match in approx 12 seconds. Only a like for like comaprison would be fair.
IMO this kid is way faster on this footage alone and faster than Offiah/Habana etc. Be interesting to see direct comparisons with old B&W footage.

To be honest, I think that the heineken cup beats the Super 14 for pure exitement and drama, although I agree that it's way better in almost every way than rugby league, where players don't have the safety net that comes from having no ruck and lineouts. There is nothing in r. league that's unique to any other sport.
Further to my earlier comments on fast men in Rugby League in the olden days.Mick Murray the Barrow winger was a 9.8 man over 100 yds. Also Frank Castle Barrow was a Flyer. The fastest man without a doubt is Ken Irvine of Australia who holds the World record at 9.23 secs for the 100.which has stood for many years.
Brian Bevan once ran the 100 yards in full rugby kit, bootsand ball in 10.8 secs. Also at one time Workington Town had the 3 fastest men in Rugby League playing for them. Wally McCarther..George Huddart, and Ralph McCarten. All could run the 100 yds in 10.00secs. Craig is fast but is he that fast.

Very difficult to say in fairness as some sprinters and I mean genuine sprinters, international standard have tried there hand at rugby league and union. I was present when offiah did a 10.98 at thornes park wigan in the GB training squad but ade mafe signed for wigan and altho didnt get much first team coverage, I am know his times would have been superior to offiahs. Also some people who are really quick on the track cant convert that pace when carrying a ball so lot of variables to consider.

I have played both codes and preferred Union as it was not as hard. I didn't need to be as fit and the tactics were simple. League was far harder all around yet I loved playing both. I did get the odd studded back in Union when being on the wrong side but heck, any coward can stamp on a player in a prone position. Still love both codes.
Rugby league is a pile of shit, less skill less tactics its just crap. So basically a scrummage between union and league would result in an easy scrum for union then. Union fowards weigh 20+ stone for a reason you fool, and if you look at most modern fowards you will see that they are all muscle. If League props are 16-17 stone then thats a bit of a step down in physicallity from Union.

To be honest, I think that the heineken cup beats the Super 14 for pure exitement and drama, although I agree that it's way better in almost every way than rugby league, where players don't have the safety net that comes from having no ruck and lineouts. There is nothing in r. league that's unique to any other sport.

Further to my earlier comments on fast men in Rugby League in the olden days.Mick Murray the Barrow winger was a 9.8 man over 100 yds. Also Frank Castle Barrow was a Flyer. The fastest man without a doubt is Ken Irvine of Australia who holds the World record at 9.23 secs for the 100.which has stood for many years.

Brian Bevan once ran the 100 yards in full rugby kit, bootsand ball in 10.8 secs. Also at one time Workington Town had the 3 fastest men in Rugby League playing for them. Wally McCarther..George Huddart, and Ralph McCarten. All could run the 100 yds in 10.00secs. Craig is fast but is he that fast.

Ground looks like whitehaven by the way and lightfoot is a very stong cumbrian name so there could be a bit of bias there? Remember there always seemed to be a lightfoot on the workington team sheets.

Very difficult to say in fairness as some sprinters and I mean genuine sprinters, international standard have tried there hand at rugby league and union. I was present when offiah did a 10.98 at thornes park wigan in the GB training squad but ade mafe signed for wigan and altho didnt get much first team coverage, I am know his times would have been superior to offiahs. Also some people who are really quick on the track cant convert that pace when carrying a ball so lot of variables to consider.

Fastest Winger I've seen in union lately is like to be the lad from USA(Ngwenya?) who smoked Habana..lol. Habana is very quick also I am not saying he isn't!
Varndell is quick but is slower now than he used to be. Rupeni caucau was very quick at his best but that is not the case anymore.

I have played both codes and preferred Union as it was not as hard. I didn't need to be as fit and the tactics were simple. League was far harder all around yet I loved playing both. I did get the odd studded back in Union when being on the wrong side but heck, any coward can stamp on a player in a prone position. Still love both codes.

Rugby league is a pile of shit, less skill less tactics its just crap. So basically a scrummage between union and league would result in an easy scrum for union then. Union fowards weigh 20+ stone for a reason you fool, and if you look at most modern fowards you will see that they are all muscle. If League props are 16-17 stone then thats a bit of a step down in physicallity from Union.
