Hi, I'm a mom of 3 and I can't afford preschool. I use PHONIC DANCE STUDIO and it was amazing. My kids learned 26 new dance moves AND all their letter sounds in 2 weeks. Don't worry its all you need to get ready for preschool or kinder. You can find it here on youtube. It costs less than $10 to download and it has saved me alot of money, even if your child is in preschool this will really help.
What the heck is this?? I would rather die than to be in that class with this phonics teacher. If I was going to look back who my teachers were, I would blank this memory out for sure. Trust me! Happened in 2006,and then ask any deaf student in that very class if he is their favorite teacher. I would bet that most of them would say no way! Kids know when their intelligence is insulted by then, and you people still have no idea with this kind of thing. Take this from a Deaf person since birth!
@Bunjer I don't think the children are deaf. Because they are repeating everything he says, and exactly as he says it and even putting in other vocal comments as well.
I think he is just using the signs as a way to make learning phonics fun. Phonics is about the sounds of letters and letter combinations and using that knowledge to help with pronouncing words, more than anything else.. So knowing that I'd say this is a hearing class. Unless you can correct me otherwise....I'm not sure
@ShaiMyst I believe the students are deaf and its an Oral class. Their attempt teaching the kids are futile, and a high percentage of the deaf kids will not succeed let alone be a hearing person. If so, then my other argument is that the American Sign Language (ASL) is being mauled lingusitcally, and it is called linguism. Its politically incorrect to maul the English Language as much as it is to maul the American Sign Language. If I am deaf in that class, I would rather be dead than alive!
Also, I have no vested interest in this, but just want people to have knowledge. I happened to click on this and had to respond to these allegations. Also, this is probably fun for the kids. Anyone thought about that? Whenever you can make something for the child fun or exciting, learning will be easier and more effective! Hey it's even true for me and adults in general!
Wow, grow up. Where does is say he is trying to be ASL interpreter? Who said he is excellent sign language? Please before you make comments, try to get what is actually happening in the video.
You can do that by reading comments below and also research on google.
A few points:1. speed is fast; are there two versions fast, slow ? 2. cognitive load - signs match animals i.e. first letter of the animal name in English. So are you teaching the names of the animals of the "phonics" of the letter? I wonder if this is too much for the kids. 3. The TPR you use seems to be very small because you are sitting...why don't you try using a second person to hold and turn the cards.Overall, some nice ideas that I'll try with my kids. Thanks for up-loading. Cheers.
I thought it was great. I used to be a teacher and wish I had thought of it back then. I'm teaching my son with Down syndrome sign language and the signs that I know appeared to be correct...maybe we are in the same "region".
It a shame there are so many negative things being said. You are creating an engaging experience for your students- how cool. If you follow up with the sign only will the students respond with the sounds? How would you extend the concept for blends and digraphs?
I know! If people would just read and not try to assume or infer and if they don't know what phonics is, educate themselves like I do/did, to make sure I had the correct understanding.
and try to pay close attention to title of the video. it says "sign language"...not "american sign language". so pretty much any non-verbal gesture can go into the category.
i am trying to become a teacher and i also know ASL. i personally i don't see anything wrong with him using the wrong signs...i think he should actually modify them in a way that'll better teach the english letters/sounds to his students. i see most of the signs he uses not really having much of an effect in teaching the letters, i think the pictures of the animals on the cards are enough. also notice he is teach PHONICS...not sign language.
The sign for snake he used is correct and what I use also, however, I've always used and seen it signed closer to the mouth and forward. It is a 'bent-v' hand shape.
You can't be an English teacher, unless you have a degree. Unfortunately, it doesn't apply to ASL. It's nice to see teaching kids ASL, but don't teach them wrong signs! Teach them right signs!
Actually, using hand signs and gestures of any sort is incredibly effective in memorizing things in nearly every subject.
If his intent was to teach them sign language, then he certainly did not do that effectively. However, if his intent was to put motions to the sounds and give the children something to link with the sounds in order to memorize them, he did that quite effectively. Hearing or deaf, the students can remember "signs" (correct or not) in order to recall this lesson.
Did he say he is teaching ASL? No, he didn't say that. Look at the other comments. Also, how do you know its ineffective? Do you know these children? Let's think before we type people! like someone else said and like I told someone else, this is about "phonics" Knowledge is power, go google it and instead of everyone bashing this guy for trying to help little kids learn phonics, let's say, "hey, pretty cool technique" some of the signs are wrong? will the children go and hang out with Deaf ppl?
Hearing teachers teaching phonics using sign language is nothing wrong but it is so dead wrong for them not to check with any native signers for correct sign usage. I know that every region sign differently but I am telling you not some of the signs are even close. Don't teach wrong signs please!
No. He's not teaching ASL. Do you see where did he say he's teaching ASL??
He said "Phonics" "Phonics refers to a method for teaching speakers of English to read and write that language. Phonics involves teaching how to connect the sounds of spoken English with letters or groups of letters (e.g., that the sound can be represented by c, k, ck or ch spellings) and teaching them to blend the sounds of letters together to produce approximate pronunciations of unknown words." You can google it. smile
I am a special education teacher. I also teach phonics to k-2 classes. I am working on my own phonics system, but I haven't posted anything from it yet.

How many people do this with their students?
Also good questions.

actually most of the animal signs are correct.

The snake should be a 'v' and wiggle. Then again there are 'accents' in any language. :)
