I have 15 Tull albums and I have been a fan since the 70's. It was a privilege to be in the same room with them when I saw them in concert in London Ontario a few years back.
Since I first heard Tull in '69, I knew I found something different, and musically better than any others. I spent the next 40 years waiting for someone else to knock them off, but Tull's accessible melodies, combined with ambitious chord and time signature changes, keep them at the top of my musical chart. NEVER DULL!
@willicat441 If you're looking for worthy successors, I'd recommend Okkervil River. They have the same sort of feel, only they're a little more on the Indie side.
@willicat441 You hit the nail on the head there, "NEVER DULL", always 100% effort on every album, i cant think of one band that has made so many excellent albums over the decades, with Ian at the helm they have easily survived the years with a great legacy behind them, and still they march on, different members come and go but the quality never changes. Seen them 3x and met Ian once, nice chap signed my programme for me !
I am so happy to have found your channel, love all the selections you have posted thus far. Also great reply to soverysneaky, diplomatic and to the point...
I have all their albums from This Was to Stormwatch on vinyl and CD... One of my favourite bands, and this is one of my favourite albums from them... In my mind, the swan song of their classic era. And Orion is among my favourite Tull songs... must be the Celtic in me...
I have nearly all of their albums and "Stormwatch," "Broadsword," and "Heavy Horses" are my favorites, I think. Not too fond of their earlier "jazz" sound, but definitely love their 70s and 80s stuff. Fortunate to have dated someone who was a Tull fan--who turned me into an even bigger Tull fan--and thus exposed me to songs other than just what was radio released.
@soverysneaky dumbass why even bother posting if you don't like the band or why even bother listening if you don't like them it's great anyway that aqualung89 has that many CDs and uploaded them to YouTube I would of never heard a lot of great jethro tull songs if he hadn't
Ian Anderson is the greatest poet to have lived in my lifetime, I can only imagine how he comes up with the words he puts to music. My Ears are not worthy.
In my humble opinion Ian Anderson's voice is one of the greatest in rock history. Sure, there were/are some with greater range but his presentation was so distinctive.
Always loved this song since my dad show it to me a year or so ago. I'm just a teenager. This song holds a special meaning for me, mainly because my middle name is Orion. It's great.
interesting, I though that Anderson's compositions in this LP adopted a somewhat random pattern of modulation that did not always reach the level of melody - progressive rock, certainly, but less hummable than earlier works (which is one undeniable pleasure of music). Nevertheless, whatever is of Tull is beyond reproach -
@faerie130 Very Cool. My uncle and brother got me interested in Tull when I was around 11 or 12. Still love it. This is my favorite song on this album. cheers!
i bought this album like 20 yrs ago.i used to go to sleep listening to it.if u listen carefully to the tracks u will find this album is one of the best ever.
Tull are special. I've been a fan since the late eighties. My uncle lent me his original copies of their first three albums and I've been hooked ever since! Remember rushing out and buying Stormwatch and Crest of a knave, and a year or two later blew all my Christmas money on the Twenty years Box Set. Still got the 5 LP's but the box has fallen apart!! Money well spent.
i had this album on tape in the mid 80s. forgot about it. and just found it again on u tube. man i love ian anderson. in 74 when i was nine he was in nz for a concert. he came by my mums boyfreinds place to look at a classic car he had. my memorie of seeing him there is hazy. just some cool looking dude with a lot of hair and funny accent
@thaschnodrus First album I ever heard was Aqualung,Tulls' 4th about 2 years after it came out. Was hooked on Tull.....got those first 3 you talked about:This Was,Stand Up and Benefit and was hooked even more and got each one that came out ever since.
Is it me or do Tull sound better as one get's older. It's to do with the quality of sadness and yearning for things lost that songs like this one evoke. It might just be me, but this makes me want to weep into my beer for the beauties of things past.
@manlyduckling No question, quackster, if you even listen to interviews from '70-'71, you can tell that this fellow has extraordinary insight into the human spirit already. I'm 61 and not ashamed to admit to many many eye leaks over the years, listening something from Ian Anderson.
@manlyduckling I'm right with you on 'the deeper meanings' which come from the Genius of Ian Anderson. Retrospective viewings can be very hard hitting. Where do you really belong ?
@manlyduckling I know exactly what you mean. "Stormwatch" as an album definitely has that evocative and melancholy quality. One of my favorites by them, from start to finish.
You can tell by the quality of the comments here (and the scant few of them!) that it takes a special appreciation for great music to dig down and find songs like, Orion. My Dad taught me at an early age to find the constellation of Orion in the night sky. It was he who imparted in me an appreciation and fascination for life on Earth, for the stars and planets, and what might lie beyond.
behold the magic of prog, friend. it's very unique compared to most other types of music. Classical songs all sound the same to me, as do jazz and most rock... but prog... King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis, Necromandus, Death, The Faceless, etc... some would disagree with me, but that's ok.
@Endlessworldgod Wow. You're cool bro. You're 15 and you listen to music that is not mainstream? Wow too cool man. I bet you're a real rebel. Thumbz up4u Bro!!1~
Thanks so much for the upload! I heard it the first time on my sister's old LP, but it's been lost for about 12 years now...Brings back good memories.Take care!
I remember when this record (yes, record not cd) came out. My friends and I ran out to the stores to buy it! Then we were lucky enough to see Jethro Tull in concert! I was 15.

Hey, look for the Orion post with the Hubble photo simulation typical of the birthplace of stars. Tull's "Orion" works pretty good with it.....

This album was a turning point.
The last album they made that I liked.
Broadsword had a couple of good tunes, then it was all down hill.
But the work they did before? I will always love it.
