  • Giant centipede.... flying and shooting like crazy... wait, this isnt Team Andromeda, right ? Anyway , looks like an awesome classic :D thanks for sharing

  • Wow, I forgot how how impressive this game is. Especially for the late 80s.

  • I just bought this for 3$ from amazon download :)

  • @Saur, thanks for the response. Playing this at home would of course not be the same thing, but at least be a great souvenir or keepsake of some sorts.

  • Is there an EU PAL release of this disc? Can't find any info on it. I used to love the hydraulic cabinet!

  • @Roodwurm I don't think there was one I'm afraid. I loved the hydraulic cabs too! ^^

  • Outstanding conversion!

  • Now this is interesting. This isn't a straightforward translation of the arcade, but altered to use the PS2 visual style. You can see this on the lava planet. It's an interesting choice, but I really do prefer the original 1988 graphics. Today's games overuse transparency and lighting effects. There isn't as much weight to those graphics; it's too watered down. Anyway, thanks a lot for the video, great playing!

  • Hey nice vid buddy! But couldnt you cut your options / controller config beeing made on the next videos out? :s

  • @mayhemtv This is not something I normally do. It was just that in this particular game, the wealth of options was so great I wanted to show it. It hammers home how much thought has gone into it.

  • Now this is what being a graphic whore is about.

  • awsome conversion! i dont like what they did with space harrier and outrun.

  • But, I wanted to see more, this isn't on the sega classics collection I have.

  • Ceratinly is a "brilliantly obsessive conversion", they even included support for the Hori USB Flight Stick!

  • Im sorry, i love the graphics and all...but i REALLY dislike what they did to the good ol music..

  • This is the remix version of the music from the FM Towns version. You cen freely select streaming or chip generated original arcade version music aswell.

  • Thats cool...i always played this on the Genises, loved the music fro b etter than the rest. Too bad i dont own a ps2..

  • i still have the sega saturn version, but the ps2 version seems a bit faster :-)

now this would indeed be a exelent xbl and psn game. as are the orginal outrun, turbo outrun, and outrunners :-) and all those other sprite scaling games from sega ofcourse.

  • Great gameplay :)

  • this would be perfect for xbla/psn

  • Very good gameplay !!

  • Thank you very much - I wanted to compliment your upload of the Galaxy Force cabinet.

  • Looks a hell of a lot better than the Mega Drive/Genesis version I'm used to.

At 0:53 does the fourth option on the menu say 'defucker'? =P

  • :D - no that's the anti-aliasing filter "Deflicker".

  • I play this game on mame religiously. Definately one of Sega's finest, they need to bring it back. Although in later levels it gets crazy and I get all confuzzled :D

  • Sega are sitting on a gold mine with their back catalogue. These Sega Ages editions are great but I'm still hoping they pull their fingers out and start exploiting their arcade output through the 90s.

I was gagging for Afterburner Climax aswell - no chance of that now either... ¬_¬

  • I've got this on my PS2 (bless Swap Magic!) it really is great to finally have an arcade perfect conversion of this often underrated classic, I have so many happy memories of being tossed around in that huge old cabinet!

  • i totally missed this game, i didnt even realise there was a PS2 version, gonna try & pick up a copy, looks good.

  • Yeah I agree, Sega just don't make em like this or something fantastic (I mean fantastic) anymore. Man...

  • Agreed, A friend Of mine is trying despetaly to find an original machine for his arcade, just because the game is that damn good...

  • This should've come to America. Why did this have to stay in Japan?! I would've liked it!

  • I'd liked it too. I hope Sega puts out another Sega Ages compilation soon!

  • Shit man - took 2 DECADES to get an arcade perfect port. Finally,I must order me a copy :)

  • The Sega Ages Saturn Version is arcade perfect as well. But this one is a more complete collection, and output progressive scan 480p

  • Almost. The framerate was halved in the Saturn version.

  • No, the Saturn version is NOT arcade perfect.

It runs at 30fps, that's HALF the framerate of arcade and PS2 versions. So how can you say the Saturn version is arcade perfect?

  • really? don't know that, must grab this PS2 version then. What do you think about the MAME version?

  • the MAME "version" is the arcade ROM being emulated. MAME runs the game fine, at 60 FPS.

Although emulation isn't complete or perfect yet, it's good enough to run the game as smoothly as the arcade.

  • Funny how there's a warning message saying the game can only be bought in Japan and all the options are in English.

  • Love the Shaft sample in the first level.

  • I've never played anything other than the Megadrive version. Holy crap, I didn't know what I was missing not playing it on the more powerful systems.

  • the 1988 arcade game was lightyears ahead of the weak Megadrive/Genesis version. the arcade had THREE 68000 CPUs @ 10 MHz each, PLUS very powerful custom "Super Scaler" graphics hardware and other chips that the MD simply could not match. the SegaCD with its 68000 and scaling & rotation chip would not be able to handle GFII as well as the arcade either. even the 32-bit FM Towns Marty ver of GFII is downgraded from the arcade. And the Saturn version was a sloppy port.

  • I'm unfortunately not very clued up on the technical side of things but one thing I find so magic about these games like Galaxy Force is the sense of speed and motion they give. Even though scaled sprites are simple by today's standards this game totally wipes the floor with many modern games of this type (not that we get many anymore).

  • why do you say Saturn version is a sloppy port? i don't agree, saturn version is very close to the arcade

  • The Saturn version is a sloppy port because the Saturn is capable of better:

Look at Afterburner II on Saturn, it runs at twice the fps of the Arcade version.

Galaxy Force II runs at half the fps of the Arcade version.

  • After Burner II on the Saturn (60 FPS) runs at the SAME framerate as the arcade version (60 FPS).

But you're right about Saturn Galaxy Force II (30 FPS) it runs at HALF the framerate of the arcade (60 FPS).

  • That's impressive. I've played the old Genesis port countless times. Just plain sucked. THIS, though, has the intensity I remember from Afterburner. Good stuff.

  • the Genesis/MegaDrive version is not a port, it is a very VERY downgraded translation.

A port is where the original codebase, the original artwork, graphics, sound, etc. is kept the same with minimal changes.

That most definitely does NOT describe the Genesis version. or even the lesser-known FM-Towns Marty version.

  • do u know where i can find this ost version of galaxy force ii? (ie the arranged versions of this game.)

  • Yeah...I'm curious as to if there is an OST of this one around...

  • first time Galaxy Force II has come home without downgrades. finally it's 60fps! ...19 years after the arcade version came out (1988).

  • It's a good thing Sega kicked out D3 Publisher in order to ensure higher quality in the AGES lineup. In case no one knew, M2 is the company that Sega assigned to take care of the AGES line and also the Mega Drive/Genesis portion of the Wii Virtual Console...

  • Thanks for that info -

It's definetly a big step up from the earlier releases, when playing this and trying out all the different options it's obvious there is a lot of love and respect for the original game.

  • Wow! Have to check the newest Ages, if they are that good! ^____^

The first ones were crappy 3d conversions. ¬____¬

  • There's none of that rubbish on this one! ^^ - It really is an amazing version of the game, the youTube video really does'nt do it justice.

  • Thank you very much, man. =)

Do you still play some God Hand here and there?

I've quit 4 months ago, and I'm currently addicted to card tricks (O_____oU strange enough, I know). What about you?

  • I saw those on your page! ^^ - I'm far too clumsy to do anything like that, good luck with it!

I've not played God Hand in a long time either, TBH I don't think I'll get into another action game until DMC4 (Heavenly Sword does'nt seem very good after playing that demo). For the last few months I've played nothing but Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, loved every minute of it - I dare not try and work out how many hours I put into playing it. It's like another world you can escape to.

  • I love those menu sounds. Sega sure knows how to make nice sound effects.

  • They included the MD and Master System versions too?! O_O nice. <3 the AGES line.

  • Nice video. All games from the Sega Ages collection have English menus?

  • I'm not sure - I only have this and Panzer Dragoon. The options in this one are superb, you can set the display to 480p too.

  • How is the Panzer Dragoon? I picked up the Gunstar Heroes set, and I really like it, but since I don't have much experience with older Sega games, I'm really hesistant to try the other sets (but I will definetly buy this one, on account of this video!)

  • Panzer Dragoon is pretty good, it's just a tidy version of the game. Nowhere near as good a package as Galaxy Force but it's far from being a disaster. I'm such a massive fan of the game I'm just glad to own it, I would have preferred it if they tidied the textures up and increased the framerate as they did with Galaxy Force though.
