Arterial bleeds are much worse than venous bleeds because arteries are under greater pressure (being "closer" to the heart in the sense of distance traveled)) thus making it more difficult for platelets to attach to the walls of the vessel and stop bleeding on the body's own accord. This young man was very suicidal. He went into the bank and held the woman at gun point and told her to call 911. Now why do you think he would do that? He wanted to die and that's why he had the woman bent over, thus exposing his whole body... he wasn't going to kill the hostage; he wanted the cops to shoot him. @adamjh2 the brachial artery is used to control bleeding in the lower and upper parts of the arm and the elbow. putting pressure on it directly over the bone will stop the bleeding easily. ur not very smart for a big experienced adult. zero life experience? i could've sworn ive been alive for at least 17 years now. i guess i wont be alive for another couple of years huh?

@mastercrowly Hemorrhaging anywhere can be fatal, it depends on how well the area can be clotted. Arterial bleeds are much worse than venous bleeds because arteries are under greater pressure (being "closer" to the heart in the sense of distance traveled)) thus making it more difficult for platelets to attach to the walls of the vessel and stop bleeding on the body's own accord. I'll admit, EMT school was easy, I'm sure a half-dead retarded monkey could get through it, but that's not the point

@mastercrowly Having seen several deaths due to people getting shot or cut on the upper arm, I can say for a fact that your theory is false. The brachial artery is rather large, and bleeds profusely when cut. Gunshot wounds to this area often shatter the humerus making things much more complicated.
Since shooting the hostage taker in the arm will likely do nothing to incapacitate him, or stop him from killing the hostage, I fail to see your point.

This young man was very suicidal. He went into the bank and held the woman at gun point and told her to call 911. Now why do you think he would do that? He wanted to die and that's why he had the woman bent over, thus exposing his whole body... he wasn't going to kill the hostage; he wanted the cops to shoot him. Very sad indeed, I use to live in Cary and crimes are very rare there. My prayers go out to him and his family. The cops were put in a terrible position, but couldn't take the risk.

Honestly, if any of my family members were stupid enough to put a gun to an innocent persons head, I would be the cop pulling the trigger...There is no excuse for doing what this kid did. like i said earlier, devon lost his mind, cary pd did what they had to do, it was a complex and dangerous situation. people here & elsewhere want to boil it down to "yay they killed him" or "the cops were wrong" when, if you weren't there, you really have no right to speak on it. i attend the skool that he went to and tho i dont know him i know he was rly at a mental hospital a few weeks ago. he was pushed into a corner and made a bad choice. i dont believe he wanted to hurt anyone. he made a worker at the bank call 911 next to him. i thinks its wrong to shoot him in the head especially with a sniper. a leg or body shot would have brought him down easily and spared his life to get him the help he needed. poor police descision and an unfortunate ending. c'est la vie.

unlike nicksims1231 i appreciate those who say he was a good kid trying to turn his life around. he apparently was talking about this as he held my sister at supposed gunpoint (the "gun" was in a hat the entire time, noone knows for sure if he actually had one) I believe devon had a breakdown of some kind and decided to end it all thursday. He has a family too and i grieve for them and even though he terrorized a member of my family i forgive him.

I feel for the people held hostage who will likely suffer horrific psychological issues for years to come. It will be very hard for these people to get back to any sense of normal. They may be tormented with horrific dreams and constant fear for years to come. I was a victim in a similar incident. My perp turned my life into a prison much worse than the one he sits in. He will get out of his prison someday. I may never get out of mine.
