@blisselicious Nikon d3100 NO DOUT! My friend had the same dilemma that your having now and he picked the cannon power shot and he was so disappointed when he compared it to my Nikon d3100! If you have another questions feel free to ask
@redsbleeding2003 Not sure how Jared does it, but I know it's not a function of the camera. It's probably done in lightroom or whatever program Jared uses to paste the metadata on the photo (in post production).
hey jared, when i go to my Live view, im seeing this annoying Grid lines and i dont know how to take it off.. can you tell me what to do..thanks a lot.
Hey Jared, do you always use the beep, or just at shoots like this?
I personally have it turned off, especially in public places or during performances because it can be really annoying for other people, especially when focussing is hard, for example at low light locations.
why does your d3100 make that sound when it is in focus ? mine does the same but when flash is useed and when i use the flash and its dead on focus but when i don't use it the focus is all wrong please help
@bspabelonia Well the 5100 is at least a couple hundred dollars more. If you're short on money, go with the 3100 (w/out the kit lens) and buy a 35mm 1.8. The 5100 is better but more expensive. The only thing the 3100 has over the 5100 is the size, it's lighter and smaller.
@JaredPolin Loved seeing you shoot with a basic DSLR. I recently bought a Canon T3 with the 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens and I'm going to tag along with a pro friend on my first shoot this weekend. So stoked!
i just bought this camera.. can you pls help me choose what is the best portrait lens for this camera? i love taking pictures with my kid and i want that blurry background effect.. your help mean a lot to me. thanks
Great video , i love seeing pro's using some more beginner style equipment and get great looking results . At the end of the day YOU take the picture , not the camera
just found your videos and just want to say that your videos are very helpful and fun to watch.ive learner a lot.thanks for making these videos because it helps noobs like me.
@TheAbsurdity101 What you have seen on video was I a very small room with the only source of light... window. Adam was being photographed from the angle 90° as opposed to light coming from the window... so not frontally lit. ISO400 or 200 wouldn't be sufficient to even use 1/30 aperture time. Not to mention ISO100.
@handsomelok because I want to make sure that im locked in where I want it and that its tack sharp. If he moves or I move I want to get the focus right.
@handsomelok I have exactly the same habit. I'm able to half-press the button even up to 10 times before taking the photo. It's not a fear of not getting the focus right. It's sort of like when the golf player moves the bat backward and forward dozens of times before smashing the ball. Mental concentration or maybe a sheer addiction, dunno. I just like doing it. Many of us do ;)
I think the shots around the window gave the most to the pictures. Looking at the raw for this week, I was kind of disappointed to see that every bit of the sketch on it had been blown out. I think seeing that against the image to the left would have been a cool contrast for the shot.
@TheHipsterguy: You Can see that under the Pictures he was mostly at 3,5 i guess there was much less light than you might tell from the Video. I recently learned that pushing the ISO is not a such bad idea as it might seem. Glad to see that the Fro does that too ;-)
I love that you did this, Jared. I am forever telling people that it isn't the camera that makes a photo. I began photography with a 6MP Kodak and will soon move up to this DSLR because we had them in my commercial photo class and I'm used to them.
Hey Fro(Or anyone else who wants to reply), I understand you get a lot of questions like this and totally understand if I don't get an answer. But I've got a Canon 450D and a kit lens, plus a 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens. I'm 15 and have mainly done film work for the past 3 years and am up to using a Mamiya RB67. I know my way around film, but not so much digital. I'm thinking of either making a leap and get the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L or the 24-105 f/4 IS lens. Any suggestions?
@allisonxm102 Id say the 24-70 mainly because thats, at least what i would consider, their flagship L lens. Evnthough its not IS it is extremely durable, it really can take a beating (trust me :) and its weather sealed. Also the 2.8 aperture is really great for low lighting situations.
It's nice seeing what a kit lens can do with someone that knows what they are doing. I will be ordering a d5100 soon but I don't know what pics look like from a kit lens. I would love to see more from you maybe showing a comparison between a kit lens and a 2.8 of the same zoom.
I shoot canon but I have a very low budget setup... XSi with kit 18-55, 55-250 is and a 50mm f1.8. I'm able to shoot almost anything I can think of with those three lenses, and my most use lens is the cheapest of the bunch, the 50mm f1.8. You don't need an expensive camera to get good photos.
FRO, nikon 70-300 F4.5/5.6 or sigma F70-200 /2.8 ? because the matter is that i am 14 years old and i have the money but if i choose the 70-300 f4/5.6 i would also pick a tripod and a fast 50mm 1.8g. what would be your recommendation? THANK YOU i would love if you reply.
Fantastic to see the photos being taken and then the resulting images. Great way to show these 5 minute portraits. Look forward to part 2!
I think perhaps some photos of Adam at work painting could have been good too, but obviously with the time constraint and such it probably wasn't doable for this session.
I hear everyone saying that the quality of pictures doesn't depend on the camera, but on the photographer. Well, that's not entirely true. I've been wanting to get a Nikon D90 for quite some time now, I'm using an Olympus SP-600UZ at the moment. It is a horrible camera. The focus is messed up, I get a lot of over/underexposed pictures, even though they look good in the camera, the zoom gets stuck and everything in the camera is automatic. I have taken about 5 pictures that I liked in a year.
@Synnergy08 I also have a Canon S5 IS that I use when I don't have to use the Olympus and pictures come out much better, even though it only has 8MP compared to the Olympus' 12MP. There's less grain, camera doesn't freeze, no under/overexposed pictures, manual focus, there's a lot of manual control and I can add stuff to the camera (flash, filters, lenses, etc.).
@Synnergy08 Now this is where I need you to help me. If I was to get the Nikon D90, would it be good for me to get a 50mm f/1.8G or D (which one is actually better? - I love bokeh and portrait photography) and an 18-135 mm f/3,5-5,6G later on (I'm on a very low budget, I wouldn't be able to buy all this at once, but over time) or is there any better lens combo to get if you're a beginner DSLR user? Thank you.
@Synnergy08 I've got a D90 with the 50mm F18.D and it's a brilliant combo, if you're on a low budget then I'd go for the 50mm D instead of the G as the difference in quality for me was not enough to justify the price difference and I am extremely happy with it. I've also got the 18-135mm but this is not the best lens I've ever used. A lot of the time I find it's not sharp enough for me and also the variable aperture gets old. But it does have it's moments and I still do use it quite often,
@vuilbaard101 Oh, OK. It does focus on the D90 and if you say there isn't much of a difference, then I guess it would be a waste of money. Which zoom lens would you recommend for me, if not the 18-135mm? Thank you for the advice! :)
i am using the nikon d7000 with 18-105 it has the same aperture like the 18-55,and my pictures don't get that good, i mean do you do a lot of editing or,what focusing mod are you using ??? AF-A ;AF-S;AF-C ..
@maniacfuzz247 u have any other lens? i want to replace my canon kit lens with canon 15-85mm. more range and better Image quality. It also have faster focus.
My fav video was went you shot Walt backstage w/ the D3000 and now another shoot but with the D3100 which is what i just got in February. Idk why but I'm most impressed when you use the newbie cameras and get good stuff, opposed to the D3S and super good glass. and I like the private, chill, behind-the-scene vibe.
Awesome I have the same D3100. As I can see, great composition on these images made them look awesome. So, it's not about the camera, it's about the technique.
Awesome job to see you using the 18-55 you so much "hate". I upgraded to the 50mm 1.8G which is quite a lot better but the 18-55 is still a good lens to start. If you have good lighting and you know your stuff you can still get great shots. Awesome video. Thanx so much
@zoisgs You don't loose the focus because when you hear the "beep" the focus locks and you can recompose. You only loose focus if you move towards or away from the subject. So you can move the camera in any direction, and you will not loose the focus as long as you keep the same distance.
Too me is best 5 minute portret session yet, because the photos hold a certain atmosphere. He also guy with a certain personalty I think you can and must brake the rules shooting with a cheaper body, I had Canon 400D as main for years, and i just was force to break them. Really i help me learn to compose better and to hold my camera still. I have to get shot to me there are no rules.
@JaredPolin Ive already watched so much, you're like one of those profs at Uni that joke around and make even the boring stuff interesting, and in the end teach so much that i dont want the class to end!
@openenso I had the same accident months ago! Jared the culprit ;) I love my D3100 and the kit lens too. Yesterday I got me a Tamron 70-300 Di LD, ultracheap (I'm poor). Gonna be another challenge due to absence of VC :P
by the way , do more vids with 18-55mm lens , i think more people will like that ,right ? :p and one more question, can nikon d3100 do some sport photograph ?
This is why you should start with a consumer camera (eg D3100) over professional style models, amongst other reasons, of course. I use the Canon EOS 500D (Rebel T1i), and it beats point and shoots overall.
All DSLRs have full manual control and all the rest of it anyway.
Nice vid, Jared. You could also tell us what settings you were in. Was it manual or aperture prio, what WB-settings (even if it doesn´t matter for RAW - beginners usually shoot in JPEG, sadly enough), what lightmetering did you use, how did you focus (i heard the beeps so i presume "single") - spot, dynamic or auto (the big white square)?
Hey Jared, great video! I love those. It's nice that you're working on this week's theme. I think it would be great if you did these assignments yourself. This is a sharing experience after all! Keep up with the great work!

There's less grain, camera doesn't freeze, no under/overexposed pictures, manual focus, there's a lot of manual control and I can add stuff to the camera (flash, filters, lenses, etc.).
Synnergy08 6 months ago
@Synnergy08 Now this is where I need you to help me. If I was to get the Nikon D90, would it be good for me to get a 50mm f/1.8G or D (which one is actually better? - I love bokeh and portrait photography) and an 18-135 mm f/3,5-5,6G later on (I'm on a very low budget, I wouldn't be able to buy all this at once, but over time) or is there any better lens combo to get if you're a beginner DSLR user? Thank you.
Synnergy08 6 months ago
@Synnergy08 I've got a D90 with the 50mm F18.D and it's a brilliant combo, if you're on a low budget then I'd go for the 50mm D instead of the G as the difference in quality for me was not enough to justify the price difference and I am extremely happy with it. I've also got the 18-135mm but this is not the best lens I've ever used. A lot of the time I find it's not sharp enough for me and also the variable aperture gets old. But it does have it's moments and I still do use it quite often,
vuilbaard101 6 months ago
@vuilbaard101 Oh, OK. It does focus on the D90 and if you say there isn't much of a difference, then I guess it would be a waste of money. Which zoom lens would you recommend for me, if not the 18-135mm? Thank you for the advice! :)

You never fail with your vids, could you do something with the d5100,thanks

My fav video was went you shot Walt backstage w/ the D3000 and now another shoot but with the D3100 which is what i just got in February. Idk why but I'm most impressed when you use the newbie cameras and get good stuff, opposed to the D3S and super good glass. and I like the private, chill, behind-the-scene vibe.

@KennyBetterment You should see what someone can do with just a D40 on Flickr..

These photo sessions are so helpful for the budding photographer. Thanks so much for putting these together!

Thanx so much

do you always wear XS t-shirt?
ny1fanta 6 months ago
its hard to compose especially if the viewfinder does not have the 100% coverage

jared, you focus on his eyes and then move the camera lower. Dont you lose the focus this way?
zoisgs 6 months ago

Would a 17-50 f2.8 HSM Sigma and a Canon 70-200 f4 USM be a good pair of lens to use.

@JaredPolin Ive already watched so much, you're like one of those profs at Uni that joke around and make even the boring stuff interesting, and in the end teach so much that i dont want the class to end!
openenso 6 months ago
@openenso I had the same accident months ago! Jared the culprit ;) I love my D3100 and the kit lens too. Yesterday I got me a Tamron 70-300 Di LD, ultracheap (I'm poor). Gonna be another challenge due to absence of VC :P

10:20 Great Portrait
HarveyGrass 6 months ago
This is why you should start with a consumer camera (eg D3100) over professional style models, amongst other reasons, of course. I use the Canon EOS 500D (Rebel T1i), and it beats point and shoots overall.
All DSLRs have full manual control and all the rest of it anyway.
Maxsdiscos 6 months ago
that lighting is really nice
I like watching you work with the 18-55, shows there's no excuse in equipment
keep up the great content Jared

Nice vid, Jared. You could also tell us what settings you were in. Was it manual or aperture prio, what WB-settings (even if it doesn´t matter for RAW - beginners usually shoot in JPEG, sadly enough), what lightmetering did you use, how did you focus (i heard the beeps so i presume "single") - spot, dynamic or auto (the big white square)?
70Perra 6 months ago
Hey Jared, great video! I love those. It's nice that you're working on this week's theme. I think it would be great if you did these assignments yourself. This is a sharing experience after all! Keep up with the great work!

@tklmkan the focus of the shoot was not him smoking, it was to capture Adam in his work space.
