i made this last year , but for the hood i measured from ear to ear then just seamed the top. then i crocheted around the whole scoodie so the connection would be seamless.

Gorgeous! You could also crochet some squares in the pattern or a complimentary pattern and sew them on the ends and not sacrifice the length of the scarf.
