I wish the Beach Boys entire history wasn't so totally dominated by the genius that is Brian Wilson. I mean, in blurbs about their career, I've never once seen any band member's name except for Wilson. I just wish people appreciated more about the band.
I'm kinda split down the middle with this one. It's kinda cool, kinda lame. And you guys need to hear "Jackson-Kent State Blues" by The Steve Miller Band. You wanna talk about a song with atmosphere that deals with the whole Kent State killings.
Reminds me of protesting the Vietnam war in high school! The beginnings of protests against censored music, the rebellion against the establishment! Anyone remember this age?
After a couple of nice album, The Beach Boys go way down, thinking that because they are famous, they are qualified to venture into this kind of political crap! I miss so much their early recordings when I hear this!
@thebchbys A riot is nothing to joke about people get killed i was stuck in the middle of one that the police insited at the newport jazz festival i know a private investigator that arrested 30 people in a riot .In egypt if the country goes all fanatic like in iran we have a problem it wont be a democracy .
Late 60's, early 70's.........it's like the story told that goes flat: "guess you just had to be there". The Beach Boys were, their warning in this tune was sincere. Words to the wise, nothing more.
It even mentions Isle Vista! And Santa Barbara is such a piece of shit town. It's friggin Mayberry. Trust me I'm living it and can't wait to get out. Did you know the cops can crash into you in your car while they are in an UNMARKED Dodge Truck cutting accross the opposite side of the street and then SUE YOU for getting in the way! Yea, Really. And then the Mayberry thing comes into play. Everyone in bed with everyone in the town.
@russelljdj in new jersey if a cop crashes into you and puts you in a wheel chair they will say we dont know where he is we think he moved to south america
Surf's Up is a really nice album from the Beach Boys. Carl Wilson Shined. Aside from Ohio by CSN&Y I can't think of another song that references the Kent State Incident. An excellent social commentary on what was happening at the time, and a BIG step out of the box for the Beach Boys.
It's a good tune but no big feat by Mike Love as it's a cover of Leiber & Stoller's Riot in cell Block Number 9. Love just wrote some new lyrics to suit the times back in 69, 70 when students were out on the streets "fightin' the power".
The Beach Boys try to fit their time but the melody is too ponderous!

Proof that The Beach Boys could, in fact, completely suck at times

This song is a re-write of the 1954 Robins (later The Coasters) song, "Riot in Cell Block #9."

@spacepatrolman I'm not joking ....especially when Mike Love sings "The Pen is mightier than the sword but no match for a gun"
thebchbys 11 months ago
@thebchbys maybe the internet is a match for a gun because there are police brutality videos in youtube that expose that

Not their greatest song by a long chalk - but pretty topical right now, I'd say!

Mike Love sucked? Sure, he's a terrible person, but he gave us this, and "Do it Again." What else do you need?
