  • Who created this cyborg? This speed isn't humanly possible!!

  • I wonder if the band misses Mike. This guy has better showmanship.

  • Gergo Borlai...suck on that BoyGini!

  • this is not a drum-set its a castle :O

  • i think he is better than pornoy...

  • watch out...drumstick theft at 2.22.......

  • dream cover....................

  • this shit is garbage

  • @STUNTMAN296 You know Portnoy loves this drummer right?

  • Polyrhythm genius.

  • One does not simply "play drums" for Dream Theater

  • OMG! Portnoy is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY better! Big Time!

  • It's naive to think DT were looking for the best, most technical drummer they could in those auditions.

They were looking for a guy who's sufficiently more advanced than Portnoy that he can play their material with ease, but doesn't have too dominant a personality. So the guys could rely on him to do what they wanted and not much more, while they retook the creative ground Portnoy had been ruling over.

DT was too busy healing from Portnoy to give Mangini space to shine. Just wait.

  • Worst thing to hit Portugal since the 1755 Libson Earthquake.

  • of course he's gonna show off. he used to hold the world record for fastest drumming. this kind of stuff is exciting when you're watching it live. it's called showmanship, people.

  • Portnoy is way better, this dudes solo has no patterns nor dynamics it all just loud double pedal based fills lame

  • @samsk8erpimp the audio quality of this video doesn't do his playing any justice.

  • This solo has no sense at all to me.

  • Rofl, that's insane body control....

  • portnoy was getting fat, lazy and was too busy ripping off terry bozzio :)

  • Someone need to tell this guy drum solo's are suppose to sound good, not be a chance to show off......

  • @MrAdrianbelew Somone needs to tell a lot of drummers that same thing,

  • @DerekBallesty Very true.

  • AHAHHA just read the top comments and flipped out at mikePORNTOY's username xDD

  • Personally I like Mangini - he is a great drummer and is able to easily fill Portnoy's drumming duties.

BUT... the new album is a bit bland IMHO... just 'more of the same'. Not Mangini's fault, I think Portnoy was pushing DT all the time into areas that sometimes the band and some of the fans didn't always like, but at least it kept things original and fresh. I fear that without the emo ego-monster foil for Patrucci we are likely to end up with every album sounding the same old same old....

  • @SAHBfan Dunno bout sounding the same but I agree with you on the rest. Thats why I wanted Minneman in there from the second I heard Portnoy was gone.

  • @DerekBallesty Minneman is too good for them, he is so much more in my opinion.

  • @bassmanjoe Not really when you actually consider each of their individual talents. Between Petrucci, Rudess and Myong there aren't many better musicians within their genre in the world, if any. I love Portnoy, but if anything perhaps he wasn't at the same level as them and Marco is, therefore it could be said that Marco is better than Mike, but not too good for the others. I thought the same thing about Donati. No one is better on drums than him.

  • @SAHBfan I think you've got that wrong. Portnoy was always the one to push DT towards metal, away from prog rock. Remember "balls and chunk are where it's at"?

  • @FinnGamble

"think you've got that wrong. Portnoy was always the one to push DT towards metal, away from prog rock"

That is what I meant when I said 'Portnoy was pushing DT all the time into areas that sometimes the band and some of the fans didn't always like...'

Petrucci & Rudess are prog fans as you can tell from their solo work, but they can both sound a bit retrospective. I wonder if it is the friction between MP's musical tastes & Petrucci that is missing in the new album?

  • i was there

  • this is the only thing on youtube i actually watched all of that was only available in 240p.. hell yes.

  • So funny because portnoy is like a boyfriend who dumped his girlfriend (dream theater) and now wants her back He literally bring up dream theater in every interview. Portnoy fit well with dt but they were in need of a change. An honestly portnoys cheesy cookie monster vocals and his "attempts" at being heavy were not working lol. Mangini is a perfect fit and will keep dream theater from becoming stale. Btw have you heard adrenaline mob. Hahahahahha. What the fuck portnoy

  • Mangini, a freak of nature, but we love him so.

  • 240p fck

  • Absolutely made the right choice with Mangini - he is amazing. Portnoy chose to leave and Dream Theater went on to make what I think is their best album in "A Dramatic Turn of Events".

  • dream theater made the right choice hiring mike Mangini. He's a beast and played all the songs for his audition perfectly.

  • Do we have to read comments about Portnoy on every video of Mangini?! They've moved on and you should too!!

  • Awesome. I hope he doesn't blow out his rotator cuffs one day.

  • And the teacher becomes the student with overzealous abandon. Technician does not equate musicallity and history.

  • Mike Portnoy is NUMBER ONE is not MANGINI has change is Drum@!

  • @MrCroosBow would you say that if dream theater's original drummer was mike mangini and then when he quit, mike portnoy took his place?

  • Wow, this guy has got some chops, no doubt!

DT picked right so it appears!

    Timothy

    :o)

  • my arms hurt just from watching him.

  • virgil donati has the bar higher than any other drummer on the planet. just cos these other guys connect with the masses and pull more faces and move their bodies around doesn't make them great. i'm not saying mike's shit or anyone else, but virgil can play stuff with both feet that people couldn't play with their hands, then solo over the top and play with the time. any virgil fans will know what i'm talking about.

  • @daveeeed yea i would have to agree with that the dude is awsome. i don't see anything that really impresses me with mike he's an ok drummer for me !

  • @daveeeed ....and of course, that's what it's all about right? Jesus - you're all such a bunch of pubeless high school tools. It's not a competition.

Of course, you're free to post your video and let us all check out your shit.

  • PORTUGAL!!!

  • Dave DiCenso positively annihilates Mangini.

Check-him out on YouTube playing live with a band called Two Ton Shoe.

Dave demonstrates how to actually play with ferocity without ever sacrificing musicality.

    Wake-Up!!!!

  • @Easleytee Who cares?

  • Comment removed

  • 2:20 The third hand.

  • what a monster drummer..so fast and explosive.

  • not sure there's really anybody who specializes quite as stunningly and remarkably in utter 'wow factor' Ambidextrous capability as much as Mike here. 'cept maybe Bozzio. NO ONE splits limbs like this dude. cripes. get the fuck outta here! ;.....will 'ya look at this guy? just unreal what he pulls off, between the two hands, then throws in ostinato foot patters on top. Huh? Lol!

  • MP IS THE BEST NUFF

  • @MilkyCamps : MP is a MONOTON drummer..

  • @MlKEPORNTOY I love you, man... but you want a Kleenex or something?

  • Do the Mangini minions honestly believe this guy can out play Dennis Chambers?

Is there a less musical drum soloist currently navigating the globe?

Listen to Manu Katche for a slice of drum artistry and musicality.

  • Saccarine + Drool.

  • I see all these comments about great drummers but I see that everyone is forgetting Neil Peart.

  • @BeastmodeFilms I wouldnt even dare forget about Neil Peart, he is the best, enough said. :)

  • Don't forget the KING .. Buddy rich... you lil boys wanna see quickness... , check it out old school style..., smoothness= Dave weckl, bad ass grooves..=. dennis chambers

  • @ragingmember69 I'm done here. It's all about preference. Technique? There's some kid somewhere who somehow will someday eclipse all of the players being mentioned here -- and people will talk shit about him or her, too. I knew a guy in college who claimed studio creds and an awesome Yamaha kit before Yam was a huge name in drums, and he poo-pooed Buddy Rich as being nothing more than a quick paradiddle showoff. I type this with a copy of his 'Both Sides' LP propped up behind me.

  • All I hear is a roar of noise.

  • @Michael55443 The Camera cant take too much awesome XD

  • @Michael55443 Ditto, mostly. Even though this seems to be a phone camera recording, I detected the distinct sound of over-driven speakers. The kicks sound awful and much of the overall sound is dirty. I recently read a reply to a DT video of Mangini where the writer was critical of his flat sound. I never cared for Pearl anyway, even though you can make a trash can sound okay with enough effects. MM played Remo Acousticon when I saw him years ago in clinic. Talented guy, though!

  • Its about saying something, making a statement.

Mangini is very talented and it is all about what sounds good to you. Others opinions are not important, what sounds good to you? Also, it is very different listening to 99% of the players out there playing in a song context and playing a solo. The disconect is huge and if you don't get it I am not going to explain it.

Check out my attached tune Sharron is Happy . Its played on one bass drum with a single pedal.

    Boston MA

  • this has no feel to it at all...watch my solo's for some good drumming

  • I think all drummers should have big kits..............and a roadie

  • Much more innovative than Portnoy.

  • hurr durr did you record this with a toaster? hurr look how cool i am :P

  • Any one is better then Portnoy!

  • @rebarbadora anyone* than*

  • i absolutely want to be like him when i am 50.

  • PINCHE AUDIO ESTA DE LA MIERDA BORTHER

  • i love u portnoy....but this is much better

  • So much better than portnoy

  • Mike Mangini is awesome! He was the perfect choice for Dream Theater. The new album is actually the best one they've done in a LONG time.....and it's nice to not have Portnoy's vocals on it.

  • @goliath2000 AMEN

  • don't know why are people who still think dt new album is bad, Mike is amazing, thank god he fit perfectly in DT, could been worst, if they decided to stop making music that would heve been bad

  • about 15 pearl drums and about 20 zildjian cymbals!!! that kit is probably worth more than a couple months of rent!

  • @fozzles123 Rent for a Manhattan penthouse.

  • i cant wait to see them in denmark

  • I was there....awsome drum solo and excelent show from DT!!!

  • Simplesmente BRUTAL!

  • Fodão!!!! Aquiles voltou mansinho do teste. Desculpem as tietes mas ali num tinha pro auiles naum ashuaashau

  • This guy is Freaking Insane !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations ! ... I'm blown away

  • Oh my god. Mangini is amazing!

  • hes a god damn machine!!!

  • when portnoy was in DT...we tried to play his drum part, we practice by watching his educational DVDs and we learned some odd time signature, double bass groove and fills.......but now, when mangini becomes DT drummer...it's all "shifting open handed, left handed and right handed playing"......."playing 32 beats in one hand"........that is a level we can never reach unless we can play 1200 beats in one second

  • Been there!

  • That drum set has its own gravitational pull.

  • @MoarAvailabilityPlz as does every object in the universe. But yes, it is a large drum kit.

  • @benthomson34 touche.

  • @benthomson34 His kit replaced Pluto as a planet.

  • Check-out John Blackwell.

Then...all the Mangini minions can lick the perspiration from my Ball-Sack.

  • Comment removed

  • What's with all those drums? It's like he's trying to compensate for something.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY Yeah really, I hate drummers with big sets. It's like they think they are cool because they can play crazy solos on them. Kind of like those stupid guitar players like Stevie Ray Vaughn who play crazy solo's over their entire guitar instead of just 3 chords.

  • @markuscc you obviously know what you are talking about...

  • @markuscc Some drummers with big kits actually use the whole kit - jazz/rock/latin fusion players are the ones to check out

  • @Jay435 My first reaction was to call you out for being too stupid to realize I was being sarcastic. Then I realized I was on the youtube comment section and that a large portion of people on here would say what I said and actually mean it.

  • @markuscc 'Big sets'? Of what? Ohhh! NOT balls! Got it. Yeah, if you can play, a cardboard box and a drywall compound bucket are about all you need. And three-chord guitarists? Hell, Lil' Wayne's a fucking prodigy and he only needs one string. It's all arpeggios for him.

  • @theoriginalbillholt wow comparing genius musicians like dream theater to lil' Wayne it doesn't get more retarded then that. you guys are clearly not musicians. The ignorance of people is truly astounding.

  • @evh2001 Ha! Relax, son. I think I recognize your sign-on. I often bust on Lil' Wayne here because his vapid fans think he actually has musical gifts -- evidence of which I'VE never seen. The post is a joke. LW can't handle ONE string on a guitar doing arpeggios! For drums: an expressive artist can make good use of a well-appointed, huge set. Arena Rock and Hair Metal spawned the needlessly oversized drum kit. A great player can also coax magic from a box and a plastic bucket. Dig it?

  • @markuscc or they just like to have fun... man drumming is drumming. no matter what you play, if you're having fun who cares?

  • @braedonROX Another frighteningly slow person incapable of understanding sarcasm. Although, there are so many unbelievably stupid people on youtube I can see how you could have a bit of trouble realizing that I was being sarcastic.

  • @markuscc Another asshole incapable of understanding that sarcasm doesn't carry itself well through TEXT.

Feel proud, you made a douchey comment on youtube. *clap clap*

  • ........they made the right choice........way better than Portnoy! Way!

  • hes the real rock drummer

  • if I company pays me big bucks to say I use their product Id use it to..

  • Mangini's the man! enough said. DT FOREVER!

  • How about: Mangini and Portnoy are both better than most people can hope to be and debating who is better is pretty much pointless since it's mostly an opinion-driven argument. Besides, this video is about Mangini. Everyone's going off topic.

Comparing him to Portnoy is worthwhile but turning to the (Mangini drum solo) video into a discussion (or rather an argument in this case) isn't commendable.

PS, check out Benny Greb's Drum Solo - Montreal Drum Fest 2005. Another amazing solo :)

  • PEARL > tama

    PORTNOY >mangini

  • @manianeco NO it's actually a preference but considering TAma STILL makes some of their drums in Japan....they're a notch above Pearl. But seriously BOTH companies make excellent products, And if we go by your arguement Portnoy uses TAMA so they HAVE to be superior.

  • Comment removed

  • Took me ages teaching him to play like that!!

  • Mangini>Portnoy

  • @taypax Portnoy>>Mangini

  • @rbotelho11 but he is really good tho

  • @rbotelho11 Sorry dude, but many drummers can run rings around Portnoy these days and Mangini is no exception...

  • @DavidPartay Just curious, because I've not really kept my ear to the ground for quite a while: who are among the 'many' you suggest leave Portnoy twisting in the wind? Why so? I AM truly amazed by the wealth of talent that seems to be oozing from the woodwork anymore, but I have to wonder if it's only a matter of the Internet bringing people out of small-town obscurity rather than there being a mutant breed of genetically engineered SuperSlammers newly sprung on the music world.

  • @theoriginalbillholt I'll try to remember a bunch off the top of my head for you :). Virgil Donati, Thomas Lang, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dennis Chambers, Derek Roddy, George Kollias, Gavin Harrison, Jason Rullo, Alex Deegan.

The problem with Portnoy is that he just hasn't improved much since I&W. What he plays was good in 1992, but 18 years later he should be worlds apart from that, and he's not. Nothing he plays is particularly difficult for anyone who puts a bit of work in.

  • @DavidPartay

All those drummers are fucking gay.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY Hahahaha, obvious troll is obvious

  • @DavidPartay Thanks for the feedback. I dropped the ball -- or stick -- a long time ago: "I coulda been a contender, not a bum... which is what I am: a drum bum!" I know the classics you mention, and a bit about Virgil and Thomas, but I need to investigate the others. I've seen some of Derek Roddy's playing, and he's got a sick trademark double bass, but beyond blast-beats I have to see if he's anything more than a one-trick pony. That shit gets as boring as watching flies fuck.

  • @theoriginalbillholt I know what you mean, but Derek definitely has way more! There are some videos up on Youtube of him doing some 4-way independence stuff with a latin feel, and he's mentioned before that jazz gigs, etc. are his bread and butter.

  • @rbotelho11 MP >> MM in what? MM is faster, knows all the rudiments, he's ambidextrous, he can keep 4 different ostinatos with hands and feet, can play metal, rock, blues, jazz, has style.. i really don't get how can MP be better than MM (oh don't confuse the repetition of MP with style!)... this is the typical comment of the portnoy's fan with no experience

  • @tommasotemporin Favoritism will never disappear. I do think Portnoy is a fabulous drummer, but I was very impressed to meet Mangini years ago in a clinic. He seems to have prodigious gifts even beyond what most highly skilled drummers have -- like the world-record speed. His dad made him get a college degree in computer science -- as a 'fallback position' -- because he was so innately musical. 4-way and ambidexterity CAN be learned. Using them artfully well is a gift of genius.

  • Tama >>>>>> Pearl

  • I've always had respect for Portnoy, but I gotta admit, Mangini is pure excellence. Portnoy was pretty rough around the edges, Mangini is like a well oiled machine. Portnoy also seemed to max out his technique and ideas, where Mangini has no shortage. Love the new cd. You don't realise how much Mangini kills it until you try to duplicate it.

  • Ha, ha! I sat back and ate a whole handful of Crunchitos then pondered how kick a-- Travis Barker is compared to any drummer who's drummed for this band. Then again in each hand I had a drummer: Port and Mang. Then I swung them around by their ponytails and grizzled chin whiskers - real fast - and became a helicopter and toured the world, using their bodies as propeller blades. Joy! Delight! Anyway, Portnoy is a candidate for a pizza flipper now at Vinnie's Hoboken Pie Joint on 1st St.

  • @JoeJacari Right on brother, excellent comment!

Well... I'm guessing that it was. Unfortunately I wasn't able to read anything after "pondered how kick a-- Travis Barker is compared to any drummer... " ...

But yeah, good thoughts about the Crunchitos.

  • @JoeJacari Do your medication requirements need to be re-evaluated? I like vivid imaginations -- one of which you clearly have, especially if you fancy a glorified drumline graduate ( and I like Travis Barker ) to be superior to Mangini. I wouldn't give a fuck if either died tonight, but to my limited knowledge, TB pales in comparison. Portnoy delivered pies for a decade while trying to make the break into the biz, so pizza flipper? I don't think he'll go quietly into that dark night.

  • His member is tiny. His wife needs to drench it in hot sauce just so she can feel something.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY Did you ever think all this droning negativity could be put into a new project. Let. It. Go.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY you know that you are ridiculous? XD have you any idea of what a drum is?

  • WTF... what's the roadie doing behind Portnoys drums??? ;)

  • Such great energy!

  • Typical talentless Gentile.

  • @MlKEPORNTOY ...........your are a jealous little Troll............get over yourself and get off Portnoys cock......he would have a clean asshole w/you hanging around...........There are DOZENS of drummers as good AND better then MP...........open ur ears.............this is the NEW DT..........Has a nice ring to it................Get used to it loser!!!

  • @MlKEPORNTOY only another fuckin' portnoy loooooooser fan!!!

  • @MlKEPORNTOY talentless?????? are you sure???

  • Another super Talented drummer. Just started kistening to DT, they rock!

  • Size of the drumset doesn't mean shit. Jack DeJohnette on a fourpiece can kill most rock drummers. Metal has huge drumsets to impress fans who don't know much about percussion. OR they play the whole kit- Bozzio, Mike Mangini. I've seen Mangini on a small kit and he still kills it. Haters of Mike M. should read his history-one of the fastest, most technically precise drummers on earth. Played with Steve Vai, taught at Berklee.

  • @JeffreyMulac8 brann dailor has as small kit too and he`s also a killer drummer

  • Mangini makes Ulrich look pedestrian.

  • @HSimon1981 Ulrich makes himself look pedestrian. I had no respect for the whiny little 'Ultra-rich' tennis pussy once he started gunning for the poor Napster kids who were threatening to topple his gilded throne. Fuck him. Metallitard was always overrated anyway: Redneck, Swede, whatever Newstead is, and an adolescent Santana. Mass appeal does not equal classiness or define true greatness, but I'm drifting off-topic. Enjoy your night and be sure to tip your dancers generously.

  • Portnoy is a great drummer but hes off on his side projects and i like mangini too hes a really good drummer but his drum set is the second biggest ive ever seen nuff said

  • 2:19 here's the proof that mangini has 3 hands

  • @tommasotemporin He's doing some housekeeping during the solo.

  • @tommasotemporin That stupid comment, has two hands like all humans, which has plenty of speed lacking in creativity

  • @ProgresivePrototipe ehmmmm, did you realize i was ironic? -.- do you know how to laugh?

  • He's a great drummer, but doesn't anybody else realize his drum solos are the same in every "live" video?

  • @allghilliedup21 yes, it's true, and are nothing special, some of them are boring.

  • @aturbulence Arguably, MOST drum solos become boring, regardless of the drummer. I'm a drummer and I recall seeing KISS for the first time in '79, thinking how fantastic Peter Criss's solo was. Your expectations change -- or should -- as you mature. I'd much rather hear a gifted drummer who is an artist weave his or her great showoff pieces into the context of a well-crafted song as opposed to being subjected to many minutes of masturbatory playing. If you 'got game', people notice.

  • @allghilliedup21 The band decided to do that for a reason. The solo actually isn't identical, but it's structure is kept the same in each performance. You'll also notice that this tour is the first one where Dream Theater had the same set list each night.

  • @allghilliedup21 It's not an improvisation, it's a well structured and elaborate drum solo, every part/section is even writen, not a piece created in the moment in response to the stimulus of one's immediate environment and inner feelings...

  • @hybrid8253

    whatever, it's still awesome!!!!

  • i want portnoy on DT!!
